10 – When Spencer Asked About the Bills Again, I Realized How Much I Had Changed Since the Morning I Arrived With a Winning Ticket

Spencer called that afternoon.

I was folding laundry when the telephone rang.

I almost let it go to voicemail.

Not because I didn't want to speak to him.

Because I was afraid I would hear something that made me forget the careful promises I had made to myself.

I wiped my hands and answered.

"Hi, Mom."

"Hello, sweetheart."

The word came out naturally.

That surprised me.

I had been trying to protect myself from the hurt, but I hadn't stopped loving him.

I wasn't sure I ever could.

We talked briefly about his day.

He sounded tired.

I asked whether he had eaten.

He said he had.

I asked whether he had been able to rest.

He said he was trying.

I listened to each answer and resisted the urge to turn it into a list of things I needed to do.

Then he brought up the bills.

"Have you figured out what you're going to do?"

I looked at the folded clothes on the bed.

There had been a time when I would have answered before he finished the question.

I would have told him that I was working on it.

I would have promised to find the money.

I might even have mentioned something I could sell, just to show him that I was doing everything possible.

This time, I didn't rush.

"I'm still reviewing everything," I said.

"But we need to know what's happening."

"I understand."

He sighed.

"I just don't want to be worrying about money while I'm here."

Neither did I.

I had spent months worrying about money while he was there.

I had worried about it at home, at the hospital, and in shops where I stood comparing prices because I needed to make every dollar last.

I had worried about it while lying in bed.

I had worried about it while talking to him, pretending I was calm because I didn't want him to feel worse.

I knew what it was like to have money sitting in the back of every thought.

But I couldn't tell him that.

Not yet.

"I don't want you worrying about things you can't control," I said.

He was quiet.

Then he asked, "So what does that mean?"

"It means I'm trying to work out the best way to handle everything."

"All right."

I listened for a change in his voice.

There was some frustration, perhaps.

Or perhaps I was hearing what I expected to hear.

I had become so alert to the possibility of manipulation that I was in danger of turning every ordinary emotion into evidence.

I didn't want to do that.

I wanted to be fair.

But being fair didn't require me to promise money before I understood what I was agreeing to.

"I'll talk to you again soon," I said.

"Okay, Mom."

After we ended the call, I stood in the bedroom with a towel in my hands.

I hadn't given him the answer he wanted.

I didn't even know whether he had expected a specific answer.

But I had managed to speak without promising something I wasn't ready to promise.

That mattered.

I finished folding the laundry.

Then I returned to the kitchen and opened the drawer.

The ticket was where I had left it.

I took it out and placed it beside the papers.

I wanted to look at it without imagining Spencer's reaction.

I wanted to see it for what it was.

A winning ticket.

A chance to change my financial circumstances.

A resource I could use carefully.

Not an automatic answer to every request.

Not proof that I had to become responsible for every problem my son might face.

I had to remind myself of that last part.

Because even with the ticket in front of me, I could feel the old instinct returning.

If he needs help, give it to him.

If he is frightened, reassure him.

If he asks for money, find a way.

I understood why those instincts existed.

They came from love.

But they also came from fear, and I had to learn the difference.

I folded the ticket and returned it to the envelope.

Then I took a blank sheet of paper and wrote down a few questions.

What expenses were actually outstanding?

Which payments were urgent?

What did Spencer need immediately?

What could wait?

I wasn't writing those questions to avoid helping him.

I was writing them because I wanted to help in a way that made sense.

Before, I had often treated the feeling of urgency as proof that something had to be done immediately.

Now I wanted to separate the facts from the fear.

I put the paper beside the bills.

For the rest of the afternoon, I went about my ordinary tasks.

I prepared dinner.

I cleaned the kitchen.

I answered a message from a friend.

I watched the clock without constantly checking my telephone.

At first, the ordinary routine felt almost wrong.

I had become so used to centering my day around Spencer's needs that doing anything else seemed like neglect.

But nothing terrible happened because I cooked dinner or answered a message.

The world didn't collapse because I gave myself an hour without trying to solve a problem.

I was allowed to have a life outside the hospital.

That thought was simple.

It was also something I had forgotten.

After dinner, I sat at the table and reviewed the papers again.

I could now see a path toward settling the debts.

It would require care, but it no longer seemed impossible.

I didn't have to sell anything else.

I didn't have to borrow more money simply to get through the next few weeks.

I didn't have to live with the same fear that had followed me into room twelve.

For the first time, I could picture the future without calculating every expense.

Yet the picture remained incomplete.

I could imagine financial security.

I couldn't yet imagine trusting Spencer in the same way I had before.

I hated that.

I wanted the money to bring us relief.

I wanted the winning ticket to become a good thing in our family story.

I didn't want it to become the reason we learned to measure each other.

But I couldn't make that decision alone.

Spencer would have to decide what kind of relationship he wanted with me, too.

I had no control over that.

All I could control was what I did next.

I put the papers away.

Then I stood by the kitchen window and looked out at the dark street.

The same street I had watched the day before.

The same ordinary houses.

The same porch lights.

I thought about the woman who had challenged Spencer during the telephone conversation.

I thought about his answer.

And I realized that I was still waiting for him to acknowledge something I hadn't even told him I had heard.

That wasn't fair to either of us.

He couldn't explain what he didn't know I was asking about.

I would have to decide when and how to speak about it.

I wasn't ready that evening.

But I was no longer pretending the conversation would disappear if I avoided it.

I turned off the kitchen light.

For the first time, I understood that the next important step wasn't deciding how much money to give my son.

It was deciding whether I was ready to ask him for honesty.
