9 – I Had Won Enough Money to End My Financial Worries, Yet I Still Hesitated to Tell My Son Because I No Longer Knew What He Wanted From Me

The next morning, I woke with a decision I had not made the night before.

I was going to stop treating the lottery ticket as something I had to explain to Spencer immediately.

That didn't mean I was keeping it from him forever.

It meant I wanted to understand my own situation before I let anyone else's needs determine what happened next.

I had spent months reacting to one problem after another.

I wanted to make at least one decision slowly.

I went into the kitchen and made coffee.

The house was quiet, and the morning light fell across the table where I had left my papers.

I sat down and looked at the list of debts.

Then I looked at the second sheet.

My own needs.

Those words still made me uncomfortable.

I had spent so much time thinking about what Spencer needed that I had barely allowed myself to consider what I needed beyond enough money to keep helping him.

Now I had to learn how to think differently.

I started with the most obvious things.

I needed to understand how to claim the prize properly.

I needed to know what money I owed and what I could pay off.

I needed to make sure that winning did not lead me into another kind of trouble simply because I was relieved.

Most of all, I needed to avoid making promises while I was still trying to understand what had happened outside room twelve.

I wasn't going to pretend the conversation hadn't changed things.

But I wasn't going to let it make every decision for me either.

I folded the lists and placed them beside the envelope.

Then I took out my telephone.

Spencer's name was near the top of my recent calls.

I looked at it for a moment.

I wanted to hear his voice.

That was the part I found hardest to explain, even to myself.

I was angry with him.

I was hurt.

I was suspicious of words I once would have accepted without question.

And I still wanted to know whether he had slept well.

I still wanted to hear that he felt comfortable.

I still wanted to be his mother in the ordinary, unremarkable way I had been before that morning at the hospital.

Love didn't seem interested in following a sensible order.

It remained there even when trust had been shaken.

I put the telephone down and finished my coffee.

Then I went through the mail.

There were two bills and a notice about one of the personal loans I had taken out.

Before the lottery, that notice would have ruined my morning.

I would have calculated the days remaining before payment was due.

I would have checked my bank balance.

I would have wondered whether I could postpone something else.

This time, I read it carefully and placed it with the other papers.

I could address it.

I didn't have to panic.

That realization brought a little relief.

It also reminded me how much fear had controlled my life.

I had become accustomed to feeling that every problem required an immediate sacrifice.

I didn't know how to stop doing that simply because my circumstances might be changing.

But I could practice.

I could begin with the next decision.

Later that morning, I called Spencer.

He answered with a quiet greeting.

"Hi, Mom."

"How are you feeling today?"

"Not much different."

I sat at the table.

"Have you been able to rest?"

"A little."

I wanted to ask more questions, but I didn't want the conversation to become an interrogation.

So I listened.

He told me that the day had started slowly.

He mentioned that he was waiting to hear more about his care.

I asked whether he needed anything brought from home.

He said he didn't.

For a moment, I felt relieved.

Then I felt guilty for feeling relieved.

It was a strange way to live, measuring every ordinary answer against the fear that I was either doing too much or not enough.

I had never thought of motherhood as a calculation.

Yet for months, I had been calculating everything.

Money.

Time.

Bills.

Visits.

The number of times I could say yes before I had nothing left to give.

I wanted to stop.

Not because I wanted to stop helping Spencer.

Because I wanted helping him to feel like something I chose, rather than something I was compelled to do by fear.

Before we ended the call, he asked whether I had made progress with the financial situation.

I took a breath.

"I'm sorting through everything."

"Okay."

"I want to make sure I understand the expenses before I make any commitments."

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he said, "That makes sense."

I waited for him to sound disappointed.

I waited for another request.

Neither came.

We ended the call a little later.

I sat with the telephone in my hand.

Perhaps he understood.

Perhaps he was simply accepting what I had said.

I couldn't know.

And I was learning that I didn't need to decide what every silence meant.

I put the telephone down.

Then I opened the drawer and took out the envelope.

I didn't unfold the ticket.

I simply held it for a moment.

Twenty million dollars had once seemed like the answer to every question I had.

Now it seemed more like a responsibility.

I had to decide what the money would change and what it could not change.

It could change my debts.

It could change my ability to pay for treatment.

It could give me choices I hadn't had before.

It could not make Spencer tell me the truth.

It could not make me forget what I had heard.

And it could not guarantee that the two of us would find our way back to the relationship I thought we had.

I placed the envelope back in the drawer.

Then I returned to the table and continued sorting the bills.

For the first time in months, I wasn't trying to find money before I understood the problem.

I was trying to understand the problem first.

It was a small difference.

But it was the first difference that made me feel as though I was finally making a decision for myself.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: When Spencer Asked About the Bills Again, I Realized How
