8 – When I Finally Allowed Myself to Imagine Keeping the Money, I Discovered That the Hardest Part Was Not Deciding What I Could Give My Son

That evening, I opened the drawer again.

I had been avoiding it all day.

Not because I was afraid the ticket would disappear.

Because every time I looked at it, I had to confront the decision I had postponed.

I took out the envelope and placed it on the table.

The kitchen was dim except for the light above the stove.

I turned on the lamp beside the table and sat down.

For a long time, I didn't open the envelope.

I thought about what twenty million dollars had meant to me that morning.

It had meant safety.

It had meant the end of the debts that kept me awake.

It had meant that Spencer could receive whatever treatment his doctors recommended without my first wondering how I would pay for it.

It had meant that I could stop feeling as though one unexpected expense might bring everything down.

Those were still good things.

The money hadn't become bad because I had heard my son speak carelessly about me.

But I was no longer willing to treat the ticket as a promise I had already made.

Winning had given me choices.

It hadn't decided how I should use them.

I opened the envelope.

The ticket lay inside.

I unfolded it and smoothed the paper with my fingertips.

Then I looked around the kitchen.

The table had scratches near one corner.

The chair beside me creaked when I leaned back.

The cabinet above the sink held the plates I had used for years.

My mother's sewing machine was gone, but the place where I had kept it was still empty.

This was my life.

It wasn't impressive.

It wasn't perfect.

But I had worked for it.

I had paid for the things in this house with my own time and effort.

I had cared for the people I loved.

I had made mistakes.

I had survived days when I wasn't sure how I would manage the next one.

I had done all of that before the lottery ticket became valuable.

I didn't want to lose sight of it simply because I had suddenly acquired the possibility of a different future.

I folded the ticket again.

For months, I had imagined that my financial problems were the only reason I felt trapped.

Now I understood that fear had been shaping my decisions long before the ticket arrived.

Even if I paid every bill tomorrow, I would still have to decide how to respond when Spencer asked for something.

I would still have to decide whether I believed him.

I would still have to learn how to say that I needed time without feeling as though I was failing him.

The money could make those choices less frightening.

It couldn't make them for me.

I placed the ticket beside the list of debts.

Then I took out a fresh sheet of paper.

At the top, I wrote down the things I wanted to protect.

My home.

My financial security.

The few belongings that remained from my mother.

My ability to help Spencer without putting myself back into debt.

I paused before writing the next item.

My relationship with my son.

I stared at those words.

I didn't know how to protect that relationship.

I couldn't make Spencer honest by wanting him to be honest.

I couldn't force him to understand what his words had done to me.

And I couldn't guarantee that giving him money would bring us closer.

But I could refuse to make decisions based entirely on fear.

I could take the time to understand what he needed.

I could be honest about what I could afford.

I could ask questions when something didn't make sense.

I could stop treating every hesitation as evidence that I was a bad mother.

That was where I needed to begin.

I set down the pen.

Then I thought about the woman on the telephone.

I didn't know her name.

I didn't know how long she had known Spencer.

I didn't know what she had been told about his condition or our finances.

All I knew was that she had questioned him.

She had asked whether his conscience bothered him.

For a moment, I had been grateful to hear her challenge him.

Then I remembered that she had been part of a conversation I wasn't supposed to hear.

I couldn't draw conclusions about her either.

There were too many things I didn't know.

I had to be careful not to replace one assumption with another.

The only thing I could be certain of was what Spencer had said.

He had spoken about my willingness to help as though it were something he could use.

He had admitted that he could make me worry and rely on my reaction.

Those words had come from him.

I couldn't make them disappear by imagining a better explanation.

I took the ticket and placed it back in the envelope.

Then I returned it to the drawer.

I didn't lock it away.

I didn't hide it somewhere I would forget.

I simply put it where it belonged until I was ready to make a decision.

Afterward, I called Spencer again.

He answered after several rings.

"Mom?"

"It's me."

"Everything okay?"

"Yes. I just wanted to see how you were doing."

He said he was tired.

I told him I hoped he could rest.

We spoke for a few minutes.

I listened without trying to turn every sentence into a problem I needed to solve.

When he mentioned that the expenses were still worrying him, I didn't immediately promise to pay them.

I told him I was working through the numbers and wanted to understand the situation clearly.

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he said, "I understand."

I wanted to believe him.

I also knew that understanding something in a conversation was not the same as respecting it when the next difficult moment arrived.

Still, I was glad I had spoken plainly.

I didn't accuse him.

I didn't mention the lottery.

I didn't ask him to explain the conversation I had overheard.

I simply told him where I stood.

When we finished talking, I placed the telephone on the table.

The kitchen was quiet again.

But the quiet no longer felt like a space I had to fill with worry.

I could let it remain.

I could go to bed without making another promise.

I could wake up the next morning and continue working through the decisions in front of me.

I could love my son without pretending I had no limits.

That realization didn't erase the hurt.

It didn't restore the trust I had lost outside room twelve.

It didn't tell me whether Spencer had been honest with me about every expense or whether his words reflected something deeper.

Those questions remained.

But I no longer believed that I had to answer them all that evening.

I turned off the kitchen light and walked toward the bedroom.

At the doorway, I stopped and looked back at the table.

The list of debts was still there.

The fresh sheet of paper was beside it.

For months, I had used that table to figure out how to give more than I thought I had.

Now I was beginning to use it to decide what I could give without losing myself.

It was a small change.

No one else would have noticed it.

But it mattered to me.

I went to bed and placed my telephone beside the lamp.

I didn't check it again.

I didn't wait for a message.

I didn't rehearse what I would say if Spencer called asking for more money.

For one night, I allowed myself to rest without preparing for the next crisis.

I still loved my son.

I still wanted him to recover.

I still wanted to use the money to make his life easier.

But I was no longer willing to believe that loving him required me to ignore what I had heard.

The winning ticket had given me the chance to change our circumstances.

Whether it could help me understand my son was another question entirely.

And that was the question I would have to face before I decided what twenty million dollars meant for either of us.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: I Had Won Enough Money to End My Financial Worries, Yet I Still Hesitated to Tell My Son Because I No Longer Knew What He Wanted From Me

That evening, I opened the drawer again.
