7 – I Wanted to Believe There Was an Explanation for His Words, but Every Time I Remembered His Laugh, Another Easy Excuse Fell Away

That afternoon, I went through an old folder of Spencer's medical papers.

I had kept everything.

Appointment information.

Test results.

Bills.

Notes I had written during conversations with doctors because I was afraid I would forget something important.

The folder had grown so thick that I could barely close it.

I placed it on the kitchen table and opened it.

At first, I wasn't looking for anything specific.

I was trying to understand the months that had led me to that hospital corridor.

I wanted to remember what had happened, not just how I had felt.

There were dates written in the margins.

There were amounts circled in red.

There were questions I had written down and crossed out after someone answered them.

Looking at the papers, I could see how quickly one concern had led to another.

I would receive a bill.

Then I would call Spencer.

He would tell me what he understood about the expense.

I would try to work out how to pay it.

Sometimes I would call again because I had another question.

Sometimes he would say he was worried.

Sometimes I would offer more than he had asked for because I thought it might prevent the next problem.

I had believed I was being careful.

I had kept records.

I had compared expenses.

I had tried to make decisions based on what I knew.

But I had never considered that my own fear might be making it difficult for me to judge what I was hearing.

When Spencer said he needed something, I wanted to believe him.

When he sounded frightened, I wanted to make the fear disappear.

When he told me that a problem was urgent, I treated it as urgent.

I had rarely stopped to ask whether I understood the situation well enough to make a decision.

That wasn't proof that he had lied about every expense.

I knew that.

His illness was real enough to have changed both our lives.

He had spent time in the hospital.

He had undergone tests.

He had needed treatment.

I wasn't going to pretend those things hadn't happened simply because I had heard a cruel conversation.

But I had to admit that I didn't know whether every request for money had been as straightforward as I believed.

That uncertainty was difficult to live with.

I turned another page.

A receipt slipped out of the folder and landed near my elbow.

I picked it up.

It was for something I had paid weeks earlier.

I remembered the day.

I remembered standing at the counter and feeling relieved that I had managed to cover the amount.

I had called Spencer afterward.

He had thanked me.

I could still hear his voice saying the words.

At the time, I had felt useful.

Now I wondered whether gratitude had meant the same thing to both of us.

Perhaps it had.

Perhaps it hadn't.

I couldn't know from a receipt.

I placed it back in the folder.

Then I leaned back and rubbed my forehead.

I was tired of thinking about money.

I was tired of examining every memory for signs that I had missed something.

Most of all, I was tired of feeling guilty for wanting an honest answer.

I had done nothing wrong by helping my son.

I had done nothing wrong by believing he needed me.

And I had done nothing wrong by feeling hurt when I heard him speak about me that way.

I repeated those thoughts until they began to feel less like excuses and more like facts.

Then I closed the folder.

I didn't want to spend the rest of the afternoon building a case against Spencer in my own mind.

If I was going to understand what had happened, I needed to speak with him when I could do so calmly.

I wasn't ready for that conversation yet.

So I put the folder away.

I made a cup of tea and sat by the window.

For a while, I watched the street.

A delivery truck stopped outside a nearby house.

A man carried a bag from his car.

Two neighbors spoke beside a fence.

I found myself thinking about how ordinary their lives looked from where I sat.

I knew nothing about their problems.

Perhaps they were carrying worries as heavy as mine.

Perhaps they had spent the morning making decisions they didn't know how to face.

I couldn't see any of that.

I could only see what was outside the window.

It reminded me that I had been doing something similar with Spencer.

I had looked at him and seen my son.

I had seen his illness.

I had seen his need for help.

I had seen all the things I wanted to protect him from.

I hadn't looked closely enough at the possibility that he might also be making choices that hurt me.

Love had narrowed my view.

It had made the picture feel complete when important pieces were missing.

I didn't know how to correct that.

But I could stop pretending the missing pieces weren't there.

Later that afternoon, Spencer called.

I answered immediately.

"Hi."

"Hey, Mom."

His voice sounded more awake than it had that morning.

"How are you feeling?"

"All right, I guess."

I sat down at the table.

"That's good."

There was a pause.

Then he asked whether I had thought any more about the bills.

I looked at the folder on the shelf.

"I've been reviewing everything."

"There's a lot to cover."

"I know."

He exhaled.

"I just don't want things to get worse."

Neither did I.

For months, that sentence would have been enough to make me promise something.

I would have told him not to worry.

I would have said that I would handle it.

I would have searched for a way to turn his fear into a plan.

This time, I let the silence remain.

"I understand," I said eventually.

"I know you're trying, Mom."

The words should have comforted me.

Instead, they made me think of the conversation in the hospital.

I wondered whether he was grateful.

I wondered whether he was trying to reassure me.

I wondered whether he was simply saying what he believed would keep me from worrying.

I couldn't read his mind.

I didn't want to start treating every kind word as a lie.

That would destroy whatever chance we had of speaking honestly.

So I chose to answer only what he had actually said.

"I'm doing the best I can," I told him.

"I know."

We spoke briefly about his day.

Then he said he was tired.

I told him to rest.

After we ended the call, I remained at the table.

I had listened carefully to every word, but I hadn't learned anything definite.

The call hadn't proved that he was lying.

It hadn't erased what I had heard either.

I was left with the same difficult choice.

I could keep telling myself that the conversation meant nothing.

Or I could accept that something about our relationship needed attention, even if I didn't yet understand what.

I chose the second.

Not because I wanted to believe the worst about my son.

Because I wanted our relationship to be something stronger than my willingness to pay.

I wanted to be able to sit with him without silently calculating the cost of the next problem.

I wanted to hear him speak without wondering whether every sentence was meant to persuade me.

I wanted to help because I understood the need, not because I was afraid of what would happen if I didn't.

Those were simple wishes.

They were also things I had never clearly asked for.

I stood and carried my empty cup to the sink.

Then I washed it and placed it beside the other clean dishes.

The ticket remained in the drawer.

I hadn't touched it since the morning.

For the first time, I wasn't thinking about what it could buy.

I was thinking about what it could change.

And I knew that if I used the money to avoid asking the questions that mattered, I could end up with a fortune and the same fear I had carried before winning.

<a
