I had left it there after checking the lottery numbers for what felt like the hundredth time.

I washed the cup.

I dried it.

I put it away.

It was something ordinary to do with my hands while my mind tried to settle.

Then I sat at the kitchen table and took out the envelope.

The ticket was inside.

Twenty million dollars.

I laid it flat beside the place where I usually kept my bills.

For months, that table had been where I worked out how to survive the next expense.

I had arranged envelopes in piles.

I had written amounts on scraps of paper.

I had added numbers until I could no longer pretend that everything would somehow work itself out.

Today, the ticket sat among those same papers.

It looked out of place.

I picked up a medical bill and read the amount printed near the bottom.

I already knew what it was.

I had memorized the figure because I had spent so many nights trying to decide how to pay it.

I placed the bill down and looked at the ticket.

I could clear the outstanding balance.

I could settle the personal loans I had taken out.

I could stop wondering whether another expense would force me to sell something else.

I could finally breathe.

The relief should have been overwhelming.

Instead, I felt a strange emptiness.

For months, I had believed money was the obstacle standing between Spencer and a better life.

Now I had enough to remove that obstacle, and I couldn't bring myself to tell him.

I didn't like what that said about the situation.

I liked even less what it said about me.

I had always been proud of being the person Spencer could depend on.

When he needed something, I tried to find a way.

When he was frightened, I tried to make him feel safe.

When he worried about money, I told him we would work it out.

Those promises had become part of the way I understood myself.

I was his mother.

I would help him.

Simple.

Except I had never asked what would happen if my help became something he expected without thinking about the cost to me.

I looked toward the cabinet where I had once kept my mother's sewing machine.

The space was still empty.

I had sold it weeks earlier.

At the time, I had told myself that it was only an object.

My mother would have wanted me to use whatever I had to help my son.

That was probably true.

But I had used the thought to avoid admitting how much the loss hurt.

Now I wondered whether I had been doing the same thing with other parts of my life.

Had I turned every sacrifice into proof that I was a good mother because I couldn't bear to consider that some of those sacrifices might not have been necessary?

I leaned back in my chair.

The kitchen clock ticked above the doorway.

I listened to it for a while.

Then I reached for my telephone.

My first instinct was to call Spencer.

I wanted to ask how he was feeling.

I wanted to make sure he had everything he needed.

I wanted to hear his voice again, even though hearing it had been the thing that hurt me most that morning.

My thumb hovered over his name.

I didn't press it.

Instead, I put the telephone down.

I wasn't trying to punish him.

I wasn't trying to teach him a lesson.

I simply needed a little time in which I wasn't reacting to his needs.

That was a small thing to ask of myself.

It still felt wrong.

I stood and went to the sink.

Outside the window, a neighbor was carrying groceries from a car.

A child rode past on a bicycle.

Someone shut a door.

The world continued with its ordinary noises.

I envied them.

I wanted to be able to think about dinner or laundry or the package beside my front door without feeling that my whole life had shifted.

But I couldn't return to the morning.

I couldn't make myself unhear what Spencer had said.

And I couldn't pretend that the money in my handbag had no connection to it.

That afternoon, I made a list.

I wrote down the bills that remained unpaid.

Then I wrote down the personal loans I had taken out.

I included the amounts I owed and the payments that were coming due.

I had done this many times before, but usually with a sense of urgency that made my handwriting uneven.

This time, I wrote slowly.

I wanted to know exactly where I stood.

Not where I hoped I stood.

Not where I could convince myself I stood if I ignored one more expense.

The actual numbers.

When I finished, I looked at the page.

I wasn't wealthy yet in any practical sense beyond the ticket itself. I still had to handle the prize properly, and I knew that a printed ticket wasn't the same as money sitting safely in an account.

But the possibility was real.

For the first time in months, I could imagine paying what I owed without borrowing from someone else.

I could imagine keeping the few things I had left.

I could imagine not having to choose between my own security and another bill.

That should have made the decision about Spencer easier.

It didn't.

Because I wasn't only deciding how much money to give him.

I was deciding whether I could trust the reasons he gave me for needing it.

I had no answer that afternoon.

So I put the ticket back in its envelope.

I placed the envelope in a drawer and closed it.

Then I went into the living room and sat down.

The silence was different from the silence at the hospital.

There was no equipment humming.

No footsteps in the hallway.

No nurse asking whether I needed anything.

There was only my house, my unpaid bills, and the knowledge that I had heard my son say something I could never completely forget.

I stayed there until the light outside began to fade.

Then I got up and made myself something to eat.

I ate at the kitchen table.

I washed my plate.

I turned off the lights and went to bed.

Before I fell asleep, I checked my telephone.

There was no message from Spencer.

I told myself that he might be resting.

I told myself that he might have been busy.

I told myself there was no reason to read anything into the silence.

Then I put the telephone facedown on the bedside table.

I didn't sleep well.

But for the first time in months, I hadn't spent the evening trying to find money for my son.

I had spent it trying to understand what my love had become.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Next Morning, I Looked at Every Loan I Had Taken Out and Realized I Could Finally Stop Living as Though One More Bill Would Ruin Me

The drive home felt longer than usual.
