I didn't know you were coming this early."

I returned his smile as best I could.

"I wanted to see you."

He shifted slightly and looked toward the chair beside his bed.

"Come sit down."

I put my handbag on the floor and took the chair.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

I studied his face.

I looked for something that might explain the conversation I had overheard.

A guilty expression.

A nervous movement.

A sign that he had been expecting me to arrive.

I saw none of those things.

He looked like my son.

That was the problem.

I had loved him for so long that my mind kept reaching for the familiar version of him whenever something threatened that image.

I remembered him as a boy who used to come to me when something frightened him.

I remembered the way he would sit near me and wait until I noticed that something was wrong.

I remembered how important it had once felt to be the person he trusted most.

Those memories had shaped the way I understood him.

Even now, after hearing what he had said, part of me wanted to believe I had misunderstood.

Maybe he had been trying to sound tougher than he felt.

Maybe the conversation had been more complicated than the few sentences I heard.

Maybe there was an explanation that would make it possible for me to walk out of the hospital and return to the life I had known that morning.

I wanted that explanation.

I was ashamed of how much I wanted it.

Spencer glanced at my handbag.

"Did you bring anything?"

The question was casual.

He might have meant food.

He might have meant something to read.

He might simply have been making conversation.

But I heard the question differently.

I wondered whether he had been about to ask for money.

I wondered whether he had already decided how much he could get from me that day.

I wondered whether the woman on the telephone had been discussing a particular amount or whether they were simply talking about the way I reacted whenever he seemed unwell.

I hated that I was thinking those things.

I also couldn't stop.

"No," I said. "I just came to see you."

He nodded.

"Okay."

He reached for his phone, glanced at the screen, and set it down again.

I watched him do it.

The device had been sitting beside him when I entered.

I could still picture it on the bed while his voice carried through the partly open door.

I wanted to ask who he had been speaking to.

I wanted to ask why he had said what he said.

Instead, I folded my hands in my lap.

I needed to hear myself think before I spoke.

"How are you feeling today?" I asked.

He gave a small shrug.

"About the same."

I waited.

He looked toward the window.

"The doctors are still checking things."

I nodded.

I had heard similar answers before.

Sometimes there were more details.

Sometimes he mentioned a test or an appointment.

Sometimes he said he was worried about what might happen next.

Those conversations had always sent my mind racing toward practical solutions.

Who should I call?

What could I pay?

Where could I find more money?

Today, I forced myself not to rush toward an answer.

"I'm sorry you're going through this," I said.

He looked at me.

"I know."

There was nothing unusual about his response.

It wasn't especially warm, but it wasn't cruel either.

I couldn't decide whether that made me feel better or worse.

I wanted him to be the son I remembered.

I wanted to believe that the person I had heard in the hallway was only one small part of him.

But the words remained in my mind.

She always does.

I looked at the chair beneath me.

The fabric was worn along one edge.

I had sat in similar chairs during so many visits that I no longer noticed how uncomfortable they were.

I had spent hours beside Spencer's bed, worrying about him while trying to make my own fears invisible.

I had brought whatever I could afford.

I had listened when he needed to talk.

I had offered reassurance when I didn't have any answers myself.

I had done those things because I loved him.

I still loved him.

That hadn't changed simply because I had learned something painful.

But I was beginning to understand that love could make a person ignore questions they should have asked.

It could make a person confuse helping with agreeing.

It could make a person believe that saying no was the same as abandoning someone.

I had been living with that confusion for months.

I wasn't ready to admit how much it had cost me.

Spencer shifted on the bed.

"Mom?"

I looked up.

"Yes?"

He hesitated briefly.

"Have you been able to do anything about the bills?"

There it was.

The question I had been waiting for.

I felt the envelope inside my handbag as though it were resting against my skin.

I could have told him.

I could have taken out the ticket and explained what had happened that morning.

I could have watched his face change when he realized the financial pressure might finally be over.

A part of me still wanted to do exactly that.

I wanted to see relief in his eyes.

I wanted him to tell me that everything was going to be different.

But I also remembered his voice outside the door.

I remembered how easily he had spoken about my willingness to help.

I took a slow breath.

"I'm looking into things," I said.

It wasn't a lie.

I was looking into things.

For the first time, I was looking into more than how to pay another bill.

He watched me for a moment.

Then he nodded.

"Okay."

He didn't ask what that meant.

He didn't ask whether I was struggling.

He didn't ask whether I had enough money left for myself.

The silence that followed wasn't proof of anything.

I knew that.

Still, I noticed it.

I noticed every small thing now.

And I wondered how many things I had failed to notice before.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: I Had Always Believed My Son’s Next Need Was My Responsibility, but One Ordinary Question Forced Me to See Our Situation Differently

By the time I reached the parking lot, I had changed my mind about going home.
