She just has to believe I need her."

I closed my eyes.

There are sentences that hurt because they reveal something new.

And there are sentences that hurt because they force you to look at something you have been avoiding for a long time.

That one did both.

I thought about the money I had borrowed.

I thought about the things I had sold.

I thought about every time I had told someone I was fine because I didn't want them to know how frightened I had become.

I had made sacrifices willingly.

No one had forced me to sell my jewelry.

No one had forced me to pawn the sewing machine.

No one had forced me to sign the loan papers.

Those were my decisions.

But I had made them believing that I was helping my son through a difficult period.

I hadn't understood that he might be treating my desperation as something he could count on.

I wanted to hear the woman challenge him again.

I wanted her to tell him he was wrong.

I wanted her to ask how he could speak about his mother that way after everything I had done.

Instead, the conversation continued in a quieter tone that I couldn't make out clearly.

I caught a few words.

Money.

Later.

Everything.

Then Spencer laughed again.

I stepped away from the door.

I couldn't stand there listening anymore.

The ticket in my handbag seemed to grow heavier with every step I took.

Twenty million dollars.

I had spent the morning thinking that money would solve our problems.

Now I wondered whether it would make them worse.

Before I won, there had been limits to what I could give.

My savings were nearly gone.

My credit was stretched.

There were no valuable family possessions left that I could sell without feeling as though I was cutting away another piece of my past.

I had reached the point where every new expense required a difficult choice.

The lottery changed that.

It removed the limits.

And I had been ready to hand Spencer everything without asking a single question.

I hadn't even considered what he might do with the money.

I had only imagined what it would mean to stop worrying about the next bill.

That realization frightened me more than I wanted to admit.

I reached the end of the corridor and stopped beside a window.

Outside, the parking lot lay beneath the bright morning sky.

Cars came and went.

People crossed between the buildings, some walking quickly, others moving with the careful steps of people who had been sitting for too long.

I could see my car from where I stood.

I could leave.

The thought should have brought relief.

Instead, I found myself wondering whether Spencer would notice that I had been there.

Would he ask why I hadn't come inside?

Would he call me later and tell me that he was feeling worse?

Would he speak in that same calm voice, knowing exactly how much fear a few words could put into my heart?

I hated myself for asking those questions.

Not because they were unfair.

Because I had never needed to ask them before.

Or perhaps I had needed to ask them and had simply refused.

I pressed my fingers against the side of my handbag.

The ticket was folded inside an envelope I had carried from home.

I had placed it there because I didn't want to damage it.

It seemed foolish now.

I had protected that piece of paper more carefully than I had protected myself.

A nurse passed me and asked whether I needed help finding a room.

I shook my head.

"No, thank you. I'm visiting my son."

She smiled politely and continued down the hallway.

I watched her disappear around the corner.

Then I looked at the door to room twelve again.

I wanted to walk inside.

I wanted to see Spencer with my own eyes.

I wanted to know whether he looked as sick as I had been led to believe.

But I also knew that if I entered the room while I was feeling this way, I might say something I wasn't ready to say.

I might ask him about the conversation.

I might tell him what I had heard.

And I might give him the chance to explain it away before I understood what I was dealing with.

I wasn't ready for another explanation.

I had spent too long accepting explanations because I wanted them to be true.

So I stood there until my breathing settled.

Then I made myself think about the lottery ticket as something separate from my son.

The money was mine.

I had purchased the ticket before I knew it was worth anything.

I had checked the numbers myself.

Whatever I decided to do with it, I needed to understand that winning didn't create an obligation to give it away immediately.

I could take time.

I could ask questions.

I could think.

Those were simple things.

But they felt unfamiliar.

For months, I had lived as though every decision had to be made before the next phone call.

Now I was being offered something I had rarely allowed myself.

Time.

I looked at the hospital room one last time.

I could still hear the faint murmur of Spencer's conversation, though I couldn't understand the words.

The door remained partly open.

I imagined pushing it wider.

I imagined seeing him look up at me.

I imagined the expression on his face when he realized I had heard him.

Then I imagined the expression I might see if he had no idea what I knew.

I couldn't tell which possibility frightened me more.

I turned away.

I walked toward the elevators without going into his room.

It wasn't a decision about the money.

Not yet.

It was simply the first time in months that I had allowed myself to leave without asking whether my son needed something from me.

When the elevator doors closed, I looked down at my hands.

They were still trembling.

I placed my handbag on the floor between my feet and held the strap loosely.

I had come to the hospital carrying a miracle.

I was leaving with a question I could no longer ignore.

And for the first time, I understood that saving my son financially might not be the same thing as helping him.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Winning Ticket Was Still in My Purse, but the Promise I Had Planned to Make Beside His Bed No Longer Felt So Simple

I didn't leave the hospital.
