17 – I Had Finally Stopped Waiting for Dominic to Understand Why I Left, but the Truth I Had Kept From Him Still Belonged to Me

The morning after Dominic's last message, I woke feeling as though I had slept for the first time in weeks.

I was still tired, but my thoughts were quieter.

The phone remained on the table where I had left it.

I did not reach for it immediately.

Instead, I opened the curtains and let the morning light fall across the scratched tabletop.

The room looked exactly as it had the night before.

My bag rested against the wall.

My cup stood beside the sink.

The drawer containing my divorce papers was closed.

Nothing had changed while I slept, and for once, I was grateful for that.

I had spent so many nights wondering what Dominic would do next that I had forgotten how good it felt to wake up without expecting an argument.

I made breakfast and ate slowly.

Then I washed my cup and wiped the table.

These little routines had become important to me.

They reminded me that I could take care of myself without waiting for someone else to decide whether I was doing enough.

When I finally picked up my phone, there were more messages.

Dominic had sent them the previous evening.

The first asked whether I intended to ignore him forever.

The second said that he did not understand why I was making everything so difficult.

The third was shorter.

Please call me.

I read the messages without replying.

I could picture him looking at his phone, growing more irritated each time I failed to answer.

I knew that feeling.

I had experienced the other side of it for years, waiting for him to respond to something important while trying to convince myself that his silence meant nothing.

Now he was the one waiting.

But I did not feel victorious.

I felt sad that it had taken my disappearance for him to notice how completely I had stopped participating in our marriage.

Even then, he seemed more concerned with my refusal to answer than with the reasons I had left.

I placed the phone beside the cup.

I had nothing left to prove through another conversation.

That did not mean I had forgotten him.

Some memories still caught me by surprise.

I remembered the early days of our marriage, when I had believed that the two of us could build something steady together.

I remembered ordinary evenings when I had felt comfortable sitting beside him.

I remembered the future I had imagined when I first discovered I was pregnant.

Those memories were not all lies.

There had been moments when I had felt happy.

There had been moments when I had believed we were moving toward the same future.

That was why leaving hurt so much.

I was not walking away from a life that had never mattered to me.

I was walking away from the life I had wanted, after realizing that I could not make it become the life I needed.

For a while, I sat at the table and thought about the baby.

Eight weeks.

The doctor had said the words plainly.

I had been eight weeks pregnant when I fell.

The number had become fixed in my mind, like a date written on a page I could not bring myself to turn.

I had known about the pregnancy before the fall.

I had carried that knowledge quietly, thinking about how I would tell Dominic.

I had wanted the moment to feel right.

I had wanted us to be alone.

I had wanted to look at him and see happiness instead of impatience or distraction.

I had wanted to believe that the news might bring us closer.

I would never know how he might have reacted if I had told him before everything happened.

That question would remain unanswered.

I had learned to live with that uncertainty, but I had not learned how to stop wishing things had been different.

Sometimes I imagined telling him the truth now.

I imagined saying that I had been pregnant when Victoria pushed me.

I imagined explaining that the fall had caused the miscarriage.

I imagined telling him that I had waited in the hospital, hoping he would come, while the future I had quietly imagined disappeared.

I never imagined those words easily.

In every version, I had to stop several times because I could not get through them without crying.

And in every version, I eventually reached the same question.

What would telling him change?

He could not restore the pregnancy.

He could not return to the hospital and sit beside me when I needed him.

He could not undo the hours I had spent waiting for someone who never came.

The truth mattered.

But I was beginning to understand that telling the truth and asking someone to repair the damage were two different things.

I could tell Dominic what happened without expecting him to make it right.

I could also decide that I was not ready to tell him at all.

For now, I chose the second.

I needed more time.

The doctor had been the only person who knew about the pregnancy, and even then, he had known because of the medical examination.

I had not shared my private hopes with him.

I had not told him how long I had been carrying the secret.

I had not told him that I had wanted to surprise my husband with the news.

Those parts belonged to me.

I did not owe them to anyone simply because I was hurting.

That afternoon, I reviewed the divorce papers with the lawyer again.

We discussed the remaining steps and made sure the documents were in order.

I kept the conversation focused on what needed to be done.

I did not need to describe every painful memory to move forward with the paperwork.

When the conversation ended, I returned the papers to the folder.

I placed the folder in the drawer and closed it.

I was learning that I could handle the practical parts of leaving while still carrying grief that had no neat solution.

One thing did not have to be finished before the other could begin.

Later, Dominic called.

I watched his name appear on the screen.

My heart still reacted before my mind could catch up.

I hated that.

I hated that a name could bring back so many feelings even after I had decided to leave.

But I no longer mistook that reaction for a reason to answer.

The call ended.

I placed the phone facedown.

For a few minutes, I sat without moving.

Then I stood and walked to the window.

Outside, the day was moving toward evening.

The light on the table had changed.

I could see the small scratch in the wood, the one I had traced with my finger so many times.

It was still there.

I was beginning to understand that healing did not mean every mark disappeared.

Some marks remained.

The difference was that I no longer had to live as if the marks were proof that I had done something wrong.

I could look at what had happened and admit that it had hurt me.

I could grieve the child I had lost.

I could remember the marriage I had wanted.

And I could still choose not to return.

That night, I placed the phone in the drawer beneath the table instead of beside my bed.

I did not want to see it light up in the dark.

I lay down and closed my eyes.

For the first time in a long while, I did not rehearse what I would say if Dominic finally asked the right question.

I let the question remain unanswered.

I let myself rest.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: I Thought Leaving Without an Explanation Would
