16 – Dominic Wanted Me to Explain Why I Had Left, but He Still Had Not Asked the One Question That Might Have Changed Everything

Dominic's messages continued to arrive.

Some were short.

Some were long enough that I could tell he had spent time deciding what to say.

None of them changed what had happened.

I stopped opening every message as soon as it appeared.

Sometimes I waited until later in the day.

Sometimes I saw the notification and left it alone.

It was a small change, but it gave me a little space between his words and my response.

For years, I had treated every message from him as something that required immediate attention.

If he sounded upset, I tried to calm him down.

If he asked a question, I tried to answer before he became impatient.

If he was silent, I worried that I had done something wrong.

I had organized so much of my life around his reactions that I barely noticed how little room remained for my own.

Now I was trying to break that habit.

One afternoon, I opened a message that had arrived earlier.

You need to tell me what you want from me.

I sat with the phone in my hand.

The question might once have sounded like an opening.

I might have believed he was finally ready to listen.

I might have written a long reply about the hospital, the fall, and the way his absence had hurt me.

But the question also made something clear.

Dominic still seemed to believe that the problem was my failure to explain myself correctly.

He was asking what I wanted from him.

He had not asked what I had gone through.

He had not asked whether I was recovering.

He had not asked what the doctor had told me after the fall.

He had not asked why I had been so frightened when I left.

I stared at the message until the screen dimmed.

Then I set the phone down.

I could have answered with a list.

I could have told him that I wanted a husband who would come to the hospital when I was hurt.

I could have told him that I wanted him to recognize the harm Victoria had caused.

I could have told him that I wanted to be treated like a person whose feelings mattered.

But I had already spent years asking for those things in different ways.

I had explained.

I had waited.

I had tried again.

I had made excuses for him when he offered none for me.

I was tired of treating basic care as something I needed to negotiate.

I picked up the phone once more.

For a moment, I considered writing a single sentence.

I wanted you to care when I needed you.

The words were simple.

They were also the truth.

I did not send them.

Not because I was afraid of his reaction.

Because I had begun to understand that the truth did not become more real when Dominic acknowledged it.

I knew what I had needed.

I knew what he had failed to give me.

I did not need to wait for him to agree.

I put the phone away and returned to the papers on the table.

The folder was open beside me.

I checked the documents and made sure everything remained together.

The lawyer had explained what needed to happen next, and I was trying to keep my attention on the practical steps instead of the conversations I could no longer change.

I wanted to finish the divorce without turning every step into another argument.

I wanted to make decisions calmly.

I wanted to build a life in which my days were not controlled by whether Dominic was pleased with me.

Those goals seemed modest.

After the years I had spent trying to keep the marriage together, they felt enormous.

That evening, I thought about the hospital again.

I remembered the light in the room and the way the doctor had spoken carefully.

I remembered learning that I had been eight weeks pregnant.

I remembered the sudden emptiness that followed.

I had not known how to explain the loss to anyone.

I had not even known how to explain it to myself.

I had been carrying a secret that I had meant to share with my husband, and now the secret was tied to the most painful moment of my life.

Dominic still did not know.

The thought weighed on me.

Part of me wanted to tell him.

Not to bring him back.

Not to punish him.

I wanted him to know that something had happened that mattered deeply to me.

I wanted him to understand that while he had been living as if our marriage could continue without any real change, I had been grieving a child he never knew existed.

But I could not decide whether telling him would give me relief or simply open another door to disappointment.

I imagined his possible responses.

He might deny that the fall had caused the loss.

He might say he had not known.

He might blame the circumstances.

He might insist that I should have told him earlier.

He might finally understand.

I could not know which response he would choose.

That uncertainty kept me quiet.

I had already learned that I could not control how another person received the truth.

I could only decide when I was ready to share it.

For now, I was not ready.

I was still trying to make sense of my own grief.

I did not want to hand it to Dominic and then spend my energy defending it.

I put the phone on the table and went to wash my cup.

The water ran over the glass.

I rinsed it carefully and placed it beside the sink.

Then I dried my hands.

The room was quiet.

I stood still for a moment, listening to the silence.

It no longer felt quite as empty as it had in the first days.

It was beginning to feel like space.

Space to think.

Space to recover.

Space to admit that I had wanted something different from my marriage without blaming myself for failing to create it alone.

Later, Dominic sent another message.

I don't understand how you can do this without even talking to me.

I read it once.

I felt a familiar sadness, but I did not feel the same urgency to defend myself.

He did not understand because he had not been willing to listen when I was still there.

He did not understand because my leaving was easier for him to question than my suffering had been to acknowledge.

He did not understand because he was looking at the moment I walked away instead of the years that had brought me to it.

I could not make him look in another direction.

I could not force him to remember every conversation he had dismissed.

I could not make him see the hospital bed through my eyes.

I could only stop returning to the same argument in the hope that the next attempt would finally change him.

I turned the phone facedown.

Then I opened the drawer and placed the folder inside.

I closed it gently.

The sound was small, but I noticed it.

I had signed the papers.

I had left the house.

I had begun to build a life away from the people who had made me feel that my pain was something I needed to justify.

There was still grief ahead of me.

There were still decisions to make.

And there were truths Dominic did not yet know.

But I was no longer going to sacrifice my peace simply because he wanted an explanation on his own terms.

I went to bed without checking the phone again.

For the first time, I understood that not every unanswered question was mine to solve.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: I Had Finally Stopped Waiting for Dominic to
