13 – I Had Stopped Waiting for Dominic to Understand My Pain, but I Was Still Learning How to Live With the Truth He Left Behind

The hardest part of leaving was not packing my bag.

It was accepting that the person I had wanted beside me during the worst moment of my life had chosen not to be there.

I could understand the practical reasons people gave for staying away from difficult situations.

I had heard enough explanations to know how easily someone could make absence sound reasonable.

But none of those explanations changed the empty space beside my hospital bed.

I remembered waking up and looking toward the door.

I had expected Dominic to appear eventually.

Even after the nurse told me he had not come, I kept finding reasons to believe he might still arrive.

Perhaps he was speaking with the doctor.

Perhaps he was on his way.

Perhaps he needed time to understand what had happened.

I had given him every excuse I could think of because the alternative was too painful.

He had known I was hurt.

He had known I was in the hospital.

And he had not come.

That was the truth I kept returning to.

I no longer tried to make it sound less serious.

One morning, I woke before the room had fully brightened.

The curtains looked gray in the early light.

I sat up slowly, careful of the lingering tenderness near my eyebrow, and listened to the quiet around me.

For a moment, I could almost imagine that I was back at home.

I could imagine the familiar sounds of the house beginning below me.

Then I remembered where I was.

I was alone in a small room with my bag against the wall and my divorce papers in the drawer.

The memory hurt, but it did not frighten me as much as it once had.

I was beginning to understand that remembering my old life did not mean I had to return to it.

I washed my face and looked at myself in the mirror.

The stitches were healing.

The skin around them was still tender, but the mark no longer looked quite as angry as it had before.

I touched the edge of it carefully.

I thought about how Victoria had looked at me before the fall.

I thought about the way she had spoken as if my place in the family depended on my willingness to accept whatever she decided.

For a long time, I had believed that keeping the peace was my responsibility.

If Victoria was upset, I tried to make things easier for her.

If Dominic was distant, I searched for a way to bring him closer.

If they disagreed with me, I questioned whether my feelings were reasonable.

I had been so busy trying not to upset anyone that I had stopped asking whether anyone was concerned about upsetting me.

That realization was painful.

It was also clear.

I could not change the way I had lived before the fall.

I could only decide what I would accept from that point forward.

After breakfast, I opened the drawer and took out the folder.

The divorce papers were inside.

I checked them again, not because I had forgotten what I signed, but because I wanted to be certain that I had not misplaced anything important.

The papers felt ordinary beneath my fingers.

They were thin.

They made a faint sound when I turned them.

There was nothing magical about them.

They could not erase the years I had spent with Dominic.

They could not restore the pregnancy.

They could not make Victoria regret what she had done.

But they represented a decision I had made when I was no longer willing to pretend everything could be repaired by my patience.

I returned the papers to the folder.

Then I placed the folder back in the drawer.

I was learning to let a decision remain a decision without reopening it every morning.

My phone lit up later that day.

Dominic had sent another message.

I looked at his name and felt the familiar tightening in my stomach.

For years, a message from him could change my entire mood.

I would wonder whether he was angry.

I would wonder whether he wanted something.

I would wonder whether this time he might finally say what I had been waiting to hear.

Now I understood that I could not build my days around possibilities.

I opened the message.

We can't keep going like this, Audrey.

I read it twice.

He was right about one thing.

We could not keep going like that.

But I was not the one asking to return to the way things had been.

I was the one who had finally stopped participating in it.

I put the phone down.

A few minutes later, I picked it up again.

I considered telling him that I had no intention of returning to the house.

I considered telling him that the marriage was over in my heart, even if the paperwork still needed to be completed.

Then I remembered all the times I had tried to explain myself and ended up feeling as though I had done something wrong.

I did not send a reply.

Instead, I turned the phone facedown and went back to the table.

The room was quiet enough that I could hear the faint movement of the curtains.

I sat there for a while without doing anything.

It felt strange not to be preparing for the next argument.

I had spent so much of my marriage anticipating someone else's reaction that stillness felt unfamiliar.

I had thought peace would arrive as a great feeling of relief.

Instead, it came in small moments.

It came when I could eat without worrying about whether someone approved of the meal.

It came when I could leave a cup on the table for a few minutes without hearing a complaint.

It came when I could think about the baby without also having to defend my sadness.

Those moments were small.

They were also mine.

In the afternoon, I took a short walk outside.

I moved slowly, paying attention to how my body felt.

I was not trying to prove that I was strong.

I simply wanted to see whether I could manage the distance without becoming exhausted.

When I returned, I sat down and rested.

The walk had been ordinary.

That was what made it important.

For so long, my life had been organized around Dominic and Victoria.

Even the smallest decision seemed to require consideration of their opinions.

Now I could make a simple choice for myself and allow it to remain simple.

I could walk because I wanted to.

I could rest because I was tired.

I could stop when my body told me to stop.

I did not need anyone's permission.

That evening, I thought again about the pregnancy.

I had not told anyone.

I had carried the knowledge privately, waiting for a moment when I could share it with Dominic.

I had imagined telling him when we were alone.

I had imagined watching his expression change.

I had imagined that, for once, there would be something between us that Victoria could not control.

I would never have that moment.

The realization came without warning, and I cried until my face hurt.

I did not try to stop the tears.

I did not tell myself that I should be over it by now.

I had lost something that mattered to me.

I was allowed to mourn it for as long as I needed.

When the crying passed, I washed my face and returned to the table.

The phone remained where I had left it.

Dominic had not called again.

For the first time, I did not feel compelled to check whether he had.

I turned off the light and lay down.

I still did not know what the next months would bring.

But I knew I was no longer waiting for my husband to decide whether my suffering deserved attention.

I had begun to believe myself.

And that was the first kind of trust I needed to rebuild.

<a
