11 – I Stopped Measuring My Days by Whether Dominic Had Called, and Slowly Began to Notice the Life I Could Still Choose

The days began to settle into a pattern.

I woke in the morning.

I washed my face carefully, taking care around the stitches above my eyebrow.

I made something to eat.

I opened the curtains and let the light into the room.

Then I tried to get through the day without measuring it by what Dominic had or had not done.

That last part was harder than the rest.

For years, his attention had determined the mood of my evenings.

If he was pleased with me, I felt as though I had done something right.

If he was distant, I searched through the day for the mistake I must have made.

I had treated his approval like a report card on my worth.

Now I had to learn how to stop checking for a grade.

I began with small things.

I stopped placing my phone beside my plate when I ate.

I stopped checking the screen every time I heard a sound outside.

I stopped rehearsing answers to questions Dominic had not asked.

None of those changes made me forget what had happened.

They simply gave the memories less room to control every hour.

Some days, I still woke with the sensation of falling.

I would open my eyes suddenly, my heart beating hard, and need a few moments to remember where I was.

The room would come into focus.

The plain curtains.

The scratched table.

The bag resting near the wall.

I would touch the skin above my eyebrow and remind myself that I was no longer on the stairs.

I was here.

I was breathing.

I was allowed to stay where I felt safe.

It took time for those words to feel true.

One morning, I noticed that the skin around my stitches was less tender.

I stood near the window and examined my reflection in the dark glass.

The mark was still there.

I could not tell whether it would leave a scar.

I wondered whether Victoria had ever thought about it.

I wondered whether Dominic had pictured me lying in the hospital bed, waiting for someone who never came.

Then I made myself stop.

I could spend the rest of my life trying to imagine what they thought.

It would not change what they had done.

I returned to the table and opened the folder.

The divorce papers were still inside.

I had begun to think of them less as a declaration of anger and more as a boundary.

I was not signing them because I wanted Dominic to suffer.

I was signing them because I could no longer accept a marriage in which my pain became an inconvenience whenever it challenged his comfort.

That distinction mattered to me.

I had spent enough time being told what my decisions meant.

I wanted to be the person who understood them for myself.

Later that day, I reviewed the paperwork with the lawyer.

The conversation was practical.

We discussed the documents, the signatures, and the steps that remained.

I listened carefully and asked the questions I needed to ask.

I did not have to explain my entire marriage to make those questions reasonable.

When the conversation ended, I felt tired.

But it was a different kind of tiredness.

I had used my energy to take care of something that belonged to my future.

I put the papers back in the folder and placed it in the drawer.

Then I sat by the window for a while.

Outside, people continued with their ordinary lives.

Someone passed by carrying a bag.

A vehicle stopped and moved on.

A voice rose briefly from somewhere beyond the window and faded.

I watched without feeling the need to turn any of it into a sign.

For so long, I had treated every small thing as evidence.

A quiet dinner meant Dominic was upset.

A delayed reply meant I had asked for too much.

A sharp comment from Victoria meant I needed to work harder to earn her approval.

I had lived as though the whole house were a room full of judges.

Now, when something ordinary happened, I tried to let it remain ordinary.

The phone rang one afternoon.

I looked at the screen.

Dominic.

I didn't answer.

The call ended.

A message followed.

We need to talk about what happens next.

I read it slowly.

There was no mention of the baby.

There was no acknowledgment of the hospital.

There was no apology for leaving me to face the worst news of my life without him beside me.

He wanted to talk about what happened next.

For years, I would have taken that as a chance.

I would have thought that perhaps he was finally ready to listen.

I would have prepared myself to be patient, to remain calm, to find a way to say everything without making him feel accused.

This time, I put the phone down.

I had already told him what I needed to say through my actions.

I had left.

I had signed the papers.

I had stopped returning to the same conversation that always ended with me apologizing for being hurt.

I did not need to reopen the door simply because he had decided he wanted to stand on the other side of it.

That evening, I took a cup of water to the table.

The glass left a small ring on the wood.

I found a cloth and wiped it away.

Then I smiled faintly at myself.

It was such a small thing to notice.

But in my old life, even a mark on a table could become a reason for someone to complain, and I had become accustomed to anticipating the complaint before it happened.

Here, I could wipe away the ring and move on.

No one raised their voice.

No one told me I was careless.

No one made me feel as if I had failed at something important.

I sat down again.

I thought about the woman I had been before the fall.

She had been frightened of losing her marriage.

She had believed that if she tried hard enough, she could keep everyone happy.

She had hidden her pregnancy because she wanted to find the right moment to tell her husband.

She had imagined that news bringing them closer.

I felt tenderness for that woman.

She had not been foolish for hoping.

She had only been trying to build a family with someone she believed would want one with her.

I could not blame her for not knowing what would happen.

I could not blame her for loving Dominic.

But I could stop asking her to remain in a life that had hurt her.

I could stop demanding that she forgive what she was not ready to forgive.

I could let her grieve.

That night, I turned off the light and lay still.

The room was quiet.

My phone remained on the table.

I did not reach for it.

I still had a long way to go.

I knew that grief would return without warning, and that some mornings would be harder than others.

But I was no longer waiting for Dominic to decide whether my life could begin again.

I was beginning it without his permission.

<a
