10 – The Messages Kept Coming, but Each One Showed Me How Little Dominic Understood About the Woman He Expected to Return

Dominic continued to contact me.

At first, the messages came at irregular times.

Sometimes I woke to find one waiting on my phone.

Sometimes it arrived in the middle of the afternoon, when I was trying to read or rest.

Sometimes several appeared together, as if he had spent a few minutes thinking about what to say and then sent every thought before he could reconsider.

I didn't answer any of them.

The first messages sounded impatient.

He wanted to know where I was.

He wanted to know why I had left.

He wanted to know when I intended to come back.

Then his tone changed.

You need to stop making this bigger than it is.

I read that sentence while sitting at the table beside the window.

The room was quiet except for a faint sound from somewhere outside.

I looked at the words until they blurred.

Bigger than it is.

I had been pushed down a staircase.

I had been taken to a hospital.

I had learned that I was eight weeks pregnant and that the fall had ended the pregnancy.

My husband had not come to see me.

His mother had sent flowers with a card that made my pain sound like an inconvenience.

And now I was being told I had made everything too big.

I placed the phone on the table.

For a moment, I wanted to reply.

I wanted to tell him exactly what had happened, even though he already knew about the fall.

I wanted to ask whether he had ever considered what it meant to lose a child before you had even found the courage to tell anyone the child existed.

I wanted to ask why he had not visited the hospital.

I wanted to ask whether he had thought about me at all while I was lying there with stitches above my eyebrow.

My fingers moved toward the phone.

Then I stopped.

I realized I was preparing another explanation for a man who had not made room for the first one.

I didn't send anything.

The next message arrived later that day.

My mother says you misunderstood what happened.

I closed my eyes.

Of course she did.

Victoria had a way of presenting her version of an event as if it were the only reasonable one.

She could say something cruel and later describe it as concern.

She could cross a line and insist she had only been trying to help.

And Dominic had spent so long accepting her explanations that he rarely questioned them.

I used to believe I could change that.

I thought that if I stayed calm enough, chose the right words, and gave him enough time, he would eventually see what I saw.

But I had mistaken patience for power.

I could not make him understand something he had already decided not to question.

The phone rang again.

This time, I watched it vibrate against the table.

Dominic's name filled the screen.

I let it ring.

When the call ended, I picked up the phone and checked the messages.

You could at least answer me.

I put it down again.

The sentence stayed with me longer than it should have.

Not because I believed I owed him an answer.

Because I remembered how often I had waited for him to answer me.

I remembered standing in the kitchen, trying to tell him that Victoria's comments were hurting me.

I remembered him looking at his phone while I spoke.

I remembered asking whether he could stay with me for a little while after a difficult day.

I remembered him saying he was tired.

I had accepted those answers because I wanted to be a good wife.

I had convinced myself that asking for less was the same as being understanding.

Now he was asking for a response, and I was learning that I did not have to give one simply because he wanted it.

I took a slow breath.

Then I turned the phone off.

For several hours, the room became quieter.

I washed the cup I had used that morning.

I straightened the folded clothes in my bag.

I opened the curtains enough to let the daylight reach the table.

I did not feel peaceful exactly.

I felt less interrupted.

That was something.

When I turned the phone back on, there were more messages.

One asked whether I was safe.

Another asked whether I had somewhere to stay.

For a moment, those questions unsettled me.

They were closer to the words I had once wanted from him.

But they came without any acknowledgment of what had brought me there.

He did not ask whether I was healing.

He did not ask what the doctor had told me.

He did not ask whether I was still thinking about the pregnancy I had lost.

He wanted to know where I was and whether I was safe, but he still seemed unable to ask why I had needed to leave.

I wondered whether he was genuinely worried.

I wondered whether he was angry that he no longer knew where I was.

Perhaps both things were true.

I could not know what was happening inside his mind.

I only knew what his words had done to me over the years.

I knew how often I had been left feeling guilty for bringing up a problem.

I knew how often I had apologized simply to end an argument.

I knew that I had been more afraid of disappointing Dominic than I had been of disappointing myself.

I was not proud of that.

But I could finally admit it.

I sat down and opened a blank message.

For several minutes, I typed nothing.

Then I wrote a sentence.

I need space, and I am not coming back.

I read it.

The words were clear.

They were also more than I wanted to give him.

If I sent them, I knew he would ask where I was.

He would want to know how long I needed.

He would probably tell me that we could discuss everything if I would only come home.

I could already hear the familiar promise that things would be different once I stopped being upset.

I deleted the sentence.

I didn't owe him a message that would invite another argument.

The decision was not meant to punish him.

It was not a game.

I was not waiting for him to panic and prove that he loved me.

I was simply trying to recover from what had happened without being pulled back into the same conversation.

That evening, I took the folder from the drawer and checked the divorce papers once more.

Everything was where I had left it.

I placed the folder beneath a few folded clothes so I wouldn't have to see it every time I opened the drawer.

Then I put my phone on silent.

I lay down and listened to the quiet room.

I still missed the person I had once believed Dominic could be.

That was the hardest truth to accept.

I had not stayed because every day was terrible.

I had stayed because there were moments when he could be kind, and I kept believing those moments were proof of what our marriage might become.

I had held on to the promise of a better version of him.

But promises were not the same as a life I could safely live.

I turned onto my side and closed my eyes.

For once, I did not rehearse what I would say if he called.

I let the silence remain.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: I Stopped Measuring My Days by Whether Dominic Had Called, and Slowly Began to
