9 – The Silence I Left Behind Started to Feel Different When I Stopped Waiting for Dominic to Say Something That Could Make It Right

The first thing I learned about being alone was that silence could have more than one meaning.

At the house, silence had always meant I was waiting for Dominic to notice something.

A cup left beside the sink.

A meal getting cold.

A question I had asked twice and finally decided not to ask a third time.

I used to think that if I waited long enough, he would turn toward me and understand.

In the little room where I was staying, there was no one to wait for.

The chair scraped against the floor whenever I moved it.

The curtains were plain and thin.

The table beside the window had a small scratch near one corner, and I kept running my finger over it when I couldn't settle my thoughts.

Those were ordinary things.

They did not ask me to forgive anyone.

They did not tell me I was being difficult.

And they did not make me explain why I had left.

For the first few days, I kept my bag near the door.

I told myself it was practical.

If I needed something, I could find it quickly.

But the truth was that some part of me still believed Dominic might appear and demand an explanation.

I imagined him standing outside the room with his familiar expression, the one that said my feelings had become an inconvenience.

I imagined him asking why I had gone without telling him.

I imagined myself trying to explain.

Then I imagined him interrupting me.

That last part was so familiar that I could almost hear his voice.

I would begin with the fall.

He would tell me I was making accusations.

I would mention the hospital.

He would say his mother had already explained what happened.

I would tell him about the baby.

And somehow, even in my imagination, I would end up defending my right to grieve.

That was when I began to understand how exhausted I had become.

I had not only lost my pregnancy.

I had spent years trying to make my marriage feel like a place where I belonged.

Now I was sitting in a quiet room, and the only person I needed to convince was myself.

I was allowed to leave.

I was allowed to stop answering.

I was allowed to decide that what happened to me was serious, even if the people who caused it refused to treat it that way.

I repeated those thoughts while I folded my clothes.

I repeated them while I washed a cup.

I repeated them when I woke in the middle of the night and reached for a phone that had not rung.

Some mornings, I believed them.

Other mornings, I felt like the same woman who had stood at the bottom of those stairs, unable to understand how quickly a life could change.

My body was recovering more slowly than I wanted.

The stitches above my eyebrow pulled when I raised my forehead.

Sometimes I touched the skin carefully, feeling the small ridge where it had begun to heal.

I did not like looking at the mark for long.

It reminded me of the stairs.

It reminded me of Victoria's face.

Most of all, it reminded me of how quickly everyone else had found a way to explain what happened.

Victoria called it an accident.

Dominic treated it like an argument that had gotten out of hand.

Neither of them seemed to understand that I had gone to the hospital carrying a secret I had been protecting for eight weeks.

I had imagined telling Dominic about the pregnancy in a quiet moment.

I had imagined his face changing when he understood.

I had imagined his hand resting over mine.

Those memories were painful because they belonged to a future that would never exist.

I could not make myself stop thinking about them.

I could only stop pretending that thinking about them would bring them back.

One afternoon, I took the folder from the drawer.

The divorce papers were inside, along with the other things I had kept because I wasn't ready to throw them away.

I placed the folder on the table.

For a while, I did nothing.

Then I opened it.

My signature looked ordinary.

That surprised me.

I had expected the letters to look different somehow, as though my hand would have revealed how frightened I had been when I wrote them.

Instead, my name sat neatly on the page.

It was the same name I had signed on birthday cards, forms, and little notes left for Dominic when I went out.

It was also the name of the woman who had finally decided to leave.

I ran my finger along the edge of the paper.

I didn't feel brave.

I didn't feel triumphant.

I felt tired, and I wanted to sleep without dreaming about the stairs.

But I had signed.

That mattered.

I put the papers back in the folder and closed it.

I didn't need to look at them every day to prove that I meant what I had done.

Later, my phone lit up on the table.

Dominic's name appeared on the screen.

I stared at it until the call stopped.

A moment later, a message came through.

Where are you, Audrey?

I read it once.

Then I read it again.

There was no apology.

No question about whether I was recovering.

Nothing about the hospital or the pregnancy he still didn't know about.

Just a demand for my location.

I set the phone facedown.

A few minutes later, another message arrived.

You can't just disappear and expect me to deal with this.

I felt a strange little movement inside my chest.

Not hope.

Not even anger.

Recognition.

He was still describing my choices as something I was doing to him.

He still believed the main problem was that I had stopped making myself available.

I had spent years explaining my feelings in different ways, trying to find the words that would finally make him listen.

Now I could see that there were things I had said plainly enough.

He had simply chosen not to hear them.

I left the message unanswered.

That evening, I made something simple to eat and sat by the window.

The food cooled while I watched the light fade outside.

For once, I didn't rush to finish because I was afraid someone would complain.

I ate slowly.

I washed the plate.

I returned the cup to the table.

Nothing extraordinary happened.

Still, when I went to bed, I noticed that I had left my bag on the floor instead of beside the door.

I hadn't planned it.

I had simply stopped thinking about leaving for a moment.

That small change meant more to me than I could explain.

I was not ready to call the room home.

I was not ready to imagine what the next year might look like.

But I was beginning to understand that I could live through one ordinary day without asking Dominic what he thought of me.

And for the first time in a long time, that felt like enough.

<a
