7 – Dominic Finally Began Looking for Answers, but I Had Stopped Believing That His Attention Meant He Was Ready to Change

I knew Dominic would eventually become impatient.

He had never liked being kept outside a decision.

When I was still living with him, he expected to know where I was going, who I had spoken to, and why I needed time alone.

He called it concern.

I had called it normal.

Now I was beginning to question both descriptions.

The first few days after I left, I kept my phone nearby.

I told myself it was for practical reasons.

The lawyer might need to reach me.

The hospital might have follow-up instructions.

There were ordinary matters that still required attention.

But I also knew that some part of me was waiting for Dominic to say something different.

I wanted him to acknowledge what had happened.

I wanted him to understand that his absence from the hospital had hurt me.

I wanted him to ask about the child we had lost.

The problem was that I was still waiting for him to become the man I had hoped he would be.

One afternoon, I opened his latest message.

He asked me to stop making things difficult.

I read it slowly.

There was no apology.

No concern.

Just an instruction to make the situation easier for him.

I placed the phone on the table.

For a moment, I felt the familiar urge to explain myself.

I wanted to tell him that I had not left to punish him.

I wanted to tell him that I had been hurt, frightened, and alone.

I wanted to remind him that I had been lying in a hospital bed while he was elsewhere.

But I knew how the conversation would probably go.

He would defend himself.

He would explain why he had been busy.

He might blame his mother, or blame me for making the situation worse.

And I would spend another hour trying to make him understand something that should never have required so much explanation.

I didn't answer.

I went to the kitchen and made tea.

The kettle clicked off.

I poured the water slowly and watched the steam rise.

It was an ordinary moment.

I held on to it because I needed something ordinary.

I didn't want every part of my day to revolve around Dominic.

Later, I checked the divorce documents.

The process was moving forward, and I wanted to be prepared for the next steps.

I made sure the papers were in the right place.

I wrote down a question for the lawyer.

Then I closed the folder.

I wasn't going to let the legal process become another reason to spend every waking hour thinking about my marriage.

There were things I could do.

There were things I had to wait for.

I was learning the difference.

That evening, Dominic called.

I watched his name appear on the screen.

For several rings, I considered answering.

I wondered whether he was calling because he had finally thought about what had happened.

I wondered whether he had something important to say.

Then I remembered the last time I had spoken to him.

I remembered how quickly he had dismissed my pain.

I let the call end.

A moment later, the phone rang again.

I didn't answer that one either.

When the screen went dark, I sat quietly with my hands in my lap.

My heart was beating too quickly.

I hadn't realized how much a telephone could frighten me.

For years, his calls had determined the rhythm of my evenings.

If he called, I answered.

If he wanted something, I tried to provide it.

If he was angry, I searched for a way to calm him.

Now the same sound was asking me to return to a role I no longer wanted.

I turned the phone off.

The room became quiet again.

I slept better that night than I had expected.

The next morning, I turned the phone back on and checked for messages.

There were several.

I didn't open them all immediately.

I made breakfast first.

I ate.

I washed my cup.

Then I sat at the table and read what I needed to read.

Dominic wanted to know whether I intended to return home.

He wanted to know why I wasn't answering him.

He said that we needed to talk.

I stared at the final sentence.

We needed to talk.

I had heard those words many times during our marriage.

Usually, they meant that he had decided something and expected me to agree.

Sometimes they meant that Victoria had complained about me and he wanted me to apologize.

Sometimes they meant that I had expressed an opinion he didn't like.

I had learned to prepare myself before those conversations.

I would think about what I had done wrong.

I would consider which words might upset him.

I would plan how to explain myself without making him angry.

Now I was looking at the same words from somewhere else.

We needed to talk.

Perhaps he believed that a conversation could restore the arrangement he had lost.

Perhaps he wanted me back because my absence had made his life inconvenient.

I couldn't know.

I only knew that a conversation would not erase the fall.

It would not bring back the baby.

It would not make the woman in our bedroom disappear from my memory.

And it would not change the fact that I had reached for him in the hospital and found no one.

I didn't reply.

Instead, I contacted the lawyer and confirmed that I would continue with the divorce.

The conversation gave me something solid to hold on to.

There were procedures.

There were documents.

There were decisions that could be made without Dominic's approval.

I focused on those.

As the days passed, my physical recovery continued.

The pain around my head gradually became less sharp, although I still had moments when I needed to rest.

I followed the instructions I had been given.

I ate regularly.

I tried to sleep at consistent times.

I went outside when I felt able.

I didn't always succeed in keeping my thoughts calm.

Sometimes a memory would return without warning.

I would see the staircase in my mind.

I would hear Victoria's voice.

I would remember the doctor's careful expression.

When that happened, I stopped whatever I was doing and took a few slow breaths.

I reminded myself that I was no longer in that house.

I was somewhere else.

I was safe enough to sit quietly and let the memory pass.

That didn't make the memory disappear.

But it helped me return to the present.

One afternoon, I found myself thinking about Dominic before the affair.

Or, more honestly, before I knew about it.

I remembered the early days of our relationship.

I remembered how attentive he could be when he wanted to impress me.

I remembered the promises he had made.

I remembered how proud I had felt when we married.

Those memories were not all false.

That was what made the loss complicated.

If every moment had been terrible, leaving might have felt simple.

But there had been good days.

There had been laughter.

There had been times when I believed we understood each other.

I couldn't erase those memories just because the marriage had ended.

I also couldn't use them as a reason to return.

Both things could be true.

I could remember the good without pretending the bad had never happened.

I could admit that I had loved him without believing that love required me to remain his wife.

That afternoon, I wrote a few sentences in my notebook.

I didn't write a long letter to Dominic.

I didn't list every grievance.

I simply wrote down what I wanted to remember.

I had been hurt.

I had lost something precious.

I had asked for help and not received it.

I was allowed to leave.

I read the sentences once.

Then I closed the notebook.

It was not a message for him.

It was a reminder for me.

That evening, another call came through.

I recognized the number.

I let it ring.

When it stopped, I didn't feel triumphant.

I felt sad.

A part of me still wished that the call might have been different.

I wished Dominic had called to say he was sorry.

I wished he had asked what the doctor told me.

I wished he had cared enough to understand that my silence wasn't a game.

But wishing didn't change what he had done.

I placed the phone in a drawer and went back to my book.

I read the same page twice because my mind kept wandering.

Eventually, I managed to follow the story.

It was a small victory.

I took it.

By the end of that week, I no longer checked my phone every few minutes.

I still looked when it rang.

I still felt a tightening in my chest when Dominic's name appeared.

But I no longer treated every message as a command.

I had started to understand that he could want an answer without being entitled to one immediately.

He could be upset without making me responsible for fixing his feelings.

And he could miss my presence without having learned how to value me.

That last thought stayed with me.

I didn't know whether Dominic missed me.

I didn't know whether he was angry, confused, or simply frustrated that I had stopped following the rules he expected me to follow.

I couldn't build my next life around guessing.

I had done enough of that.

I put the phone away and returned to the quiet room I had chosen for myself.

For once, I didn't spend the evening preparing an explanation for the next conversation.

I spent it learning how to live without one.
