6 – The First Days Away From Dominic Were Quieter Than I Expected, but Every Ordinary Thing Reminded Me of What I Had Lost

The next morning, I woke to the sound of someone moving a chair in the room next door.

For a moment, I didn't recognize the ceiling.

Then I remembered where I was.

I sat up carefully and waited for the dizziness to pass.

The room looked the same as it had the night before.

The small table.

The plain curtains.

The bag beside the bed.

Nothing had moved except the line of sunlight crossing the floor.

I liked that.

Nobody had rearranged my belongings.

Nobody had entered the room and decided that something I owned was in the wrong place.

I was beginning to understand how much energy I had spent trying to anticipate other people's reactions.

Even in my sleep, I had been listening.

Now the quiet felt different.

I got dressed and made breakfast.

It was nothing special.

A piece of toast.

A cup of tea.

I sat at the table and ate slowly.

At home, I would have been thinking about Dominic's preferences.

I would have wondered whether he wanted coffee, whether Victoria would complain about the meal, or whether I needed to prepare something else before either of them came downstairs.

I hadn't realized how often I had eaten while standing.

That morning, I finished my tea before getting up.

It was a small thing.

I was learning to notice small things.

After breakfast, I opened the folder containing my divorce documents.

I checked the papers again and made sure I understood what still needed to be done.

Then I wrote a short list of practical tasks.

There were calls to make.

There were arrangements to confirm.

There were questions I needed to ask the lawyer.

I kept the list on the table.

It helped me separate what needed action from what simply hurt.

I couldn't make the past disappear by worrying about it.

But I could answer a question.

I could complete a form.

I could make sure the documents were in order.

Those things were within my control.

I began with the easiest task.

When I finished, I crossed it off.

The satisfaction was small, but it was real.

I hadn't solved my life.

I had simply done something I needed to do.

For a while, that was how I measured progress.

Not by whether I felt happy.

Not by whether I had stopped crying.

By whether I could take care of one thing without abandoning myself in the process.

Around midday, I turned on my phone again.

The missed calls were still there.

I stared at the list.

I wondered whether Dominic had called because he wanted to know how I was feeling or because he wanted to know where I had gone.

I wondered whether Victoria had told him the truth about the fall.

I wondered whether either of them had considered the baby.

Those questions hurt because I still wanted answers.

I had to remind myself that wanting an answer didn't mean I needed to pursue it.

I put the phone down.

Then I went for a short walk.

I didn't go far.

My body wasn't ready for much, and I didn't want to push myself.

I walked along the pavement, noticing things I might once have passed without looking.

A shopkeeper arranging items near the entrance.

A child holding an adult's hand.

A woman carrying a paper bag against her chest.

Life was continuing everywhere.

I knew that already, of course.

But knowing something and feeling it were different.

I had been living inside the collapse of my own world.

For a while, I had forgotten that there was a world beyond it.

When I returned, I sat beside the window again.

I thought about the baby.

I had imagined telling Dominic in a way that would make the news feel special.

I had pictured his face changing as he understood.

I had wondered whether he would place his hand against my stomach, even though there was nothing to feel yet.

Those memories were difficult because none of them had happened.

I was grieving a child I had never held and moments I had never experienced.

Sometimes I felt foolish for being so devastated by something nobody else had known about.

Then I remembered that the pregnancy had been real.

My hopes had been real.

The loss was real, too.

I didn't need anyone else to confirm that.

That afternoon, I called the lawyer to check on the divorce paperwork.

The conversation was practical.

We discussed the documents and the next steps.

I took notes.

When the call ended, I placed the pen beside the folder.

I felt steadier than I had the day before.

Not strong.

Not healed.

Just steadier.

I could think about the divorce without feeling as though I was standing at the edge of the staircase again.

That was progress.

Later, I checked my phone.

There was a message from Dominic.

It asked where I was and why I had left without telling him.

I read it twice.

There was no mention of my injuries.

No question about the pregnancy.

No acknowledgment of the flowers his mother had sent.

He wanted to know where I was.

For years, I would have answered immediately.

I would have explained that I needed time, that I was hurt, that I couldn't return to the house yet.

I would have tried to make my decision sound reasonable enough for him to approve it.

This time, I didn't reply.

I put the phone away.

I wasn't hiding because I had done something wrong.

I was protecting the little peace I had managed to find.

That evening, I cooked a simple meal.

I washed the dishes afterward.

I folded my clothes and placed them in the drawer.

I made the bed before sitting down.

These were ordinary tasks, but they helped me feel that I could still care for myself.

For so long, caring for myself had come last.

I had made sure everyone else had what they needed before considering what I needed.

I had told myself that was love.

Now I was learning that love did not require me to disappear.

I could be considerate without surrendering every preference.

I could be patient without accepting cruelty.

I could love someone and still leave when staying became harmful.

Those ideas were easy to write down in my head.

Living by them would take longer.

The next day, I woke with a headache.

I rested and followed the medical instructions I had been given.

I didn't force myself to be productive.

I didn't tell myself I was weak because I needed another quiet day.

Recovery wasn't a race.

I was allowed to take the time my body needed.

While I rested, I thought about the woman I had been before marrying Dominic.

I remembered how easily I used to laugh.

I remembered making plans without considering whether they would inconvenience someone else.

I remembered believing that a disagreement didn't automatically mean a relationship was ending.

I hadn't thought about those things in years.

It was painful to realize how much of myself I had slowly set aside.

But I didn't want to spend the rest of my life mourning the person I used to be.

I wanted to find out who I could become now.

I started with one simple question.

What did I want to do today?

Not what would Dominic prefer.

Not what would keep Victoria happy.

What did I want?

The answer was that I wanted to rest.

So I rested.

I wanted to eat something warm.

So I prepared it.

I wanted to read without being interrupted.

So I picked up a book and sat beside the window.

Nothing about those choices would have seemed remarkable to another person.

To me, they felt like learning a language I had forgotten.

That evening, I received another message.

Dominic wanted me to call him.

I looked at the words for a long time.

I wondered whether he would apologize.

I wondered whether he would ask about the baby.

I wondered whether he would tell me that Victoria hadn't meant to hurt me.

I could imagine a dozen conversations.

None of them changed what had already happened.

I placed the phone face down.

I didn't call.

The next morning, I felt guilty about that decision.

The guilt surprised me.

I had expected relief, perhaps even satisfaction.

Instead, I felt the old habit of responsibility returning.

Dominic was my husband.

He was used to hearing from me.

Perhaps I was being unfair by refusing to answer.

Then I remembered how he had spoken to me from the hospital.

I remembered how quickly he had ended the call.

I remembered asking whether he was coming and hearing that he was busy.

The guilt became easier to understand.

I had been trained by years of disappointment to believe that his needs were always more urgent than mine.

I didn't need to obey that belief anymore.

I put the phone away and went back to my breakfast.

I didn't feel brave.

I felt uncertain.

But I was beginning to understand that a decision could be right even when it made me uncomfortable.

I would not return to the old life simply because the new one frightened me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Dominic Finally Began Looking for Answers, but I Had Stopped Believing
