One thing at a time."

I smiled faintly.

One thing at a time.

I decided I could do that.

I could deal with the legal process.

I could arrange somewhere to stay.

I could figure out how to collect my belongings.

I could grieve without pretending I was fine.

I could do all of those things even if Dominic never understood why I had left.

The next day, I was told I could prepare to leave the hospital once the remaining discharge arrangements were complete.

I packed the few personal items I had with me.

A phone charger.

My purse.

A small notebook.

The clothes I had worn before the fall were no longer something I wanted to look at, so I left them folded in the bag the hospital had provided.

I thanked the nurses who had cared for me.

I thanked Dr. Reed when he came to check on me one last time.

He reminded me to follow the instructions I had been given and to seek help if my symptoms worsened.

Then he hesitated.

"Do you have someone who can help you while you recover?"

I looked at the door.

For a moment, I thought about saying Dominic's name.

It would have been the easiest answer.

It would have made the conversation simpler.

But I was tired of pretending I had support where none existed.

"I'll make arrangements," I said.

He nodded without asking me to explain.

I appreciated that.

Some people know when another question will only make a painful situation harder.

Before I left, I looked once more at the hospital bed.

I had arrived there as Dominic's wife, still believing that a difficult marriage could be saved if I tried hard enough.

I was leaving with the knowledge that effort alone couldn't create love.

It couldn't make someone faithful.

It couldn't turn cruelty into kindness.

And it couldn't bring back the child I had lost.

I walked out slowly.

Every step reminded me of the fall.

But I kept walking.

The first thing I did after leaving the hospital was contact the lawyer again.

I wanted the divorce papers prepared as soon as the necessary details could be confirmed.

I didn't want a dramatic confrontation.

I didn't want to stand in front of Dominic and list every way he had hurt me.

I didn't want to spend another hour listening to Victoria explain why everything was somehow my fault.

I wanted the marriage to end.

Quietly.

Properly.

Without another argument that would leave me questioning myself.

The lawyer explained what would happen next.

I listened, asked a few questions, and agreed to proceed.

Then I put my phone away.

I didn't call Dominic.

I didn't send him a message telling him that I was leaving.

I had once believed that he deserved to know every decision I made.

Now I understood that he could learn about the divorce through the proper process.

He had not needed my permission to betray me.

I didn't need his permission to leave.

The following days were difficult.

My head still hurt, and I tired easily.

Sometimes I would wake from a short sleep and remember the staircase so clearly that I had to remind myself I was no longer there.

Other times, I would reach for my stomach before remembering what had happened.

Those moments were the worst.

They came without warning.

A quiet room.

A passing thought.

The sight of a pregnant woman walking along the pavement.

Each one brought back the same loss.

I stopped pretending that I could simply decide not to grieve.

I cried when I needed to.

I rested when I could.

I took each day as it came.

But I didn't go back to Dominic.

That was the one thing I remained certain about.

I had no desire to return to a house where I would be expected to apologize for being hurt.

I had no desire to sit at a table with Victoria and listen to her explain how I had embarrassed the family.

And I had no desire to share a bed with a man who could laugh with another woman while I lay in a hospital room wondering whether I would ever feel whole again.

I had loved Dominic.

That was still true.

I hated admitting it, but it was true.

Love didn't disappear the moment someone gave you a reason to leave.

Sometimes it lingered long after you understood that staying was destroying you.

I had to accept that I could miss the man I thought Dominic was without returning to the man he had shown himself to be.

The divorce papers were prepared.

When I first saw them, my hands went cold.

There was something final about seeing the end of a marriage reduced to printed lines and spaces waiting for signatures.

I read every page.

Then I read them again.

I signed where I needed to sign.

My name looked the same as it always had.

Audrey.

Just Audrey.

Not the woman who had spent years trying to earn her place in Dominic's family.

Not the wife who had swallowed every insult because she was afraid of losing her marriage.

Not the woman who had believed a baby might finally make her feel secure.

I was still grieving.

I was still frightened.

But I was making a choice.

When the paperwork was ready to move forward, I placed my copy inside the folder and closed it.

The sound was small.

It still felt like the end of something enormous.

I sat with the folder in my lap for a long time.

Then I stood up and put it away.

I wasn't going to build my next life around the people who had broken the one I already had.

I would handle the divorce.

I would recover from the fall.

And when I was ready, I would leave the life Dominic knew behind.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: I
