I kept thinking I should call her again and explain myself.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

Daniel looked at his hands.

“Because I realized I was trying to make her stop being upset so I wouldn't have to feel guilty.”

The counselor nodded.

“And what happened when you allowed her to have her feelings without trying to change them?”

“Nothing terrible happened. She sent me messages, but I didn't answer right away. I went to work the next morning. I did what I needed to do.”

I watched him.

He wasn't saying that his mother had changed.

He was describing a change in himself.

That was the part that mattered.

The counselor turned to me.

“How was the week for you?”

I considered the question.

“Better in some ways. Daniel followed through on several things. I didn't have to manage the grocery shopping or remind him about dinner. We also reviewed the bills.”

“And how did that affect you?”

“I felt less alone.”

Daniel turned toward me.

I continued.

“But I also found myself waiting to see whether he would keep doing it. I don't want to become the person who grades every little thing he does.”

The counselor asked what I thought would help.

“I need the changes to become ordinary. I don't want to have to praise him every time he washes a plate or buys groceries. I want us to share the work because we both live here.”

Daniel nodded.

“That makes sense.”

The counselor asked him to repeat what he had heard.

He took a breath.

“You don't want to manage me while I'm trying to improve. That's exactly it.”

He looked at me.

“I can do that.”

I appreciated the intention.

The counselor reminded us that good intentions were useful only when they became repeated behavior.

We discussed what a fair division of work would look like.

Daniel would handle grocery shopping and dinner on the evenings we had agreed upon.

We would both keep track of our own schedules and communicate changes rather than expecting the other person to remember everything.

Household expenses would be reviewed monthly.

Neither of us would use money as a weapon during an argument, and neither of us would assume that the person earning more automatically owed the other person unlimited support.

The counselor also returned to Eleanor.

“What will happen if she contacts your wife to pressure her about work or the marriage?” she asked Daniel.

“I'll tell her that she needs to speak to me about my decisions and leave my wife out of it.”

“And if she continues?”

Daniel hesitated.

“I'll end the conversation.”

“And if she calls again?”

“I'll end that conversation, too.”

The counselor looked at me.

“Does that feel clear enough?”

“Yes,” I said. “As long as Daniel understands that I can't be responsible for enforcing a boundary he sets.”

He turned toward me.

“I understand.”

I wanted to believe him.

More importantly, I wanted to give him the chance to show me.

After the appointment, we walked to the parking garage together.

The evening air was cold, and I pulled my coat tighter around myself.

Daniel unlocked the car.

“Can I ask you something?” he said.

“Of course.”

“When my mom calls, do you want me to tell you every time?”

I thought about it.

“I don't need a report on every conversation. But if she says something that affects our plans or if she tries to involve me, I want you to tell me honestly. I don't want to find out later that you agreed to something without discussing it with me.”

“That's fair.”

He opened the passenger door for me.

On the drive home, we talked about work.

I told him that the Ohio team had improved its forecast and that I needed to travel to another state the following month.

He asked how long I would be gone.

“Two nights, probably three if the meetings run late.”

He nodded.

“Okay. I'll handle things here.”

I looked out the window.

A few months earlier, he might have asked whether the trip was necessary or reminded me that he didn't like being alone in the house.

Now he had simply accepted that my work existed independently of his preferences.

It was a small difference.

Small differences were becoming the places where I looked for evidence.

The following weekend, Daniel did the grocery shopping without asking me to prepare a list.

He checked the refrigerator, looked through the pantry, and wrote down what we needed.

When he came home, he put the bags away and started preparing dinner.

I was working at the dining table when he walked past carrying a bag of carrots.

“You don't have to help,” he said.

“I wasn't planning to.”

He stopped.

Then he laughed, a little awkwardly.

“Right. Sorry. I meant you can keep working.”

“Thank you.”

He continued into the kitchen.

I returned to my laptop.

For twenty minutes, I heard him chopping vegetables and opening drawers.

Once, he asked where we kept the baking paper.

I told him.

He found it himself.

When dinner was ready, he called me to the table.

We ate, then cleared our plates together.

I didn't feel a need to inspect the kitchen afterward.

I didn't check whether he had wiped the counter properly.

I left him to finish the work he had chosen to take responsibility for.

Later, I went upstairs and found him sitting on the edge of the bed.

He was looking at his phone.

“Everything okay?” I asked.

“My mom sent another message.”

I sat in the chair by the window.

“What did she say?”

“That she hopes I remember who was there for me before I met you.”

He looked tired rather than angry.

“I used to answer messages like that immediately. I'd spend an hour reassuring her that she was important.”

“And what do you want to do now?”

“I want to tell her I love her. But I don't want to get dragged into another argument.”

“You can do both.”

He nodded.

After a few minutes, he typed a reply.

He told her he loved her and appreciated what she had done for him over the years.

He also said that his marriage was his responsibility and that he wasn't going to discuss private decisions through guilt-filled messages.

He read it twice before sending it.

Then he put the phone down.

“I hate that this feels like I'm doing something cruel.”

“Setting a boundary isn't the same as being cruel.”

“I know that in my head.”

“Sometimes your feelings take longer to catch up.”

He looked at me.

“That's what you say when I'm trying to understand how you felt.”

“I think it's true for both of us.”

He nodded.

I went to brush my teeth.

When I came back, Daniel had put his phone on the dresser and was reading a book.

The room was quiet.

I sat beside him and turned off my bedside lamp.

He reached for my hand.

I let him hold it.

That did not mean everything was forgiven.

It meant I was willing to share a quiet moment with him without pretending that the hard work was finished.

For the first time in a long while, those two things could exist together.

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: The Life I Was No Longer Willing to Shrink

Our second counseling appointment took place the following Tuesday.
