Some women get so caught up in their careers that they forget what matters."

Daniel looked down at his plate.

I waited.

He did not say anything.

Eleanor began talking about a neighbor whose daughter had recently changed jobs.

According to Eleanor, the woman was neglecting her family by working longer hours.

I listened for a while.

Then I asked whether she knew the woman personally.

"Of course not," Eleanor said. "But you can see these things."

"How?"

She put down her fork.

"Why are you questioning everything I say?"

"I'm asking what you mean."

"You always have to make everything into an argument."

Daniel cleared his throat.

"Can we please just eat?"

I turned to him.

"I am eating."

He gave me a warning look.

I returned my attention to my plate.

For several minutes, we ate in silence.

After the main course, Eleanor brought out a pie.

She cut Daniel a large slice and offered me a smaller one.

I accepted it.

Then she sat down and folded her hands on the table.

"I think we need to talk about what happened."

I set my fork down.

"I agree."

She looked surprised that I had answered without resistance.

"Good. Because this situation has gone on long enough."

I waited for her to continue.

"I don't like what happened any more than you do," she said.

I looked directly at her.

"You don't like what happened?"

"I don't like the way things have turned out."

That was not the same thing.

She had not said she regretted shaving my head.

She had not said she had been wrong.

She was upset about the consequences.

"Eleanor, I need you to understand that you had no right to do that to me."

Her expression hardened.

"I was trying to protect my son."

"From what?"

"From a wife who is never home."

"I work during the day, and sometimes I work late. That does not give you the right to touch me while I sleep."

"You are making this sound much worse than it was."

I felt the familiar pressure in my chest.

I could almost hear the old version of myself preparing to explain everything again.

Instead, I remained quiet.

Eleanor looked toward Daniel.

"Tell her what we discussed."

He shifted in his chair.

"Mom was worried about how much you were working."

"I know that."

"She thought you needed to slow down."

"I know that too."

He glanced at his mother.

"We all thought it would be better if things changed."

I looked at him.

"Did you think shaving my head was better?"

"No."

"Did you tell your mother that she had no right to do it?"

He rubbed his thumb along the edge of his napkin.

"I didn't know she was going to do that."

"That's not what I asked."

He looked uncomfortable.

"Not before it happened."

The answer was careful.

It was also revealing.

He wanted me to understand that he had not known the exact plan.

He did not want to discuss the fact that he had known his mother wanted to force a change in my life.

Eleanor leaned forward.

"You're focusing on the wrong thing."

I turned toward her.

"What is the right thing?"

"Your marriage. Your responsibilities. Your husband."

I nodded once.

"My marriage is exactly why this matters."

She stared at me.

"A wife cannot live as though she has no obligations."

"I have obligations. I pay the mortgage, I pay the bills, and I work to support the life we share."

"And what about Daniel?"

"He is an adult who can take responsibility for himself."

Eleanor's face flushed.

"You make it sound as though he is a burden."

"I am saying that caring for someone does not mean doing everything for them."

She pushed her plate away.

"That is a very selfish way to look at marriage."

I looked at Daniel.

He was studying the tablecloth.

"Do you agree with her?" I asked him.

He raised his head.

"Can we stop asking me to choose sides?"

"I am asking whether you agree that a wife should do everything for her husband."

"Nobody said everything."

I looked at Eleanor.

Then I looked back at him.

"Your mother has told me to quit my job so I can serve you. She has told me that I am failing as a wife because I work. And she shaved my head to force me to obey. If you disagree with her, I need you to say so clearly."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"She shouldn't have shaved your head."

The words were quiet.

But they were direct.

For one brief moment, I felt hope.

Then he continued.

"But you have to understand that she was desperate because you weren't listening."

The hope disappeared.

I picked up my napkin and placed it beside my plate.

"I was listening. I simply did not agree to quit my job."

Eleanor shook her head.

"This is exactly what I mean. You think every decision is yours to make."

"When it concerns my body and my career, it is."

She stood and began collecting plates.

I offered to help.

She refused.

Then she turned toward me.

"If you had been more willing to compromise, none of this would have happened."

I felt the words settle into the room.

There it was.

Not an apology.

A condition.

She was willing to consider the harm only if I accepted responsibility for causing it.

I stood.

"I am going to leave."

Daniel looked up quickly.

"We haven't finished dessert."

"I have finished the conversation."

"You can't just walk out every time you hear something you don't like."

I picked up my coat from the chair.

"I am leaving because this conversation is asking me to accept blame for something I did not do."

Eleanor crossed her arms.

"Then perhaps you should think about whether you want to be part of this family."

I looked at her.

"I have been thinking about that."

Daniel stood too.

"Please don't do this."

I looked at him for a long moment.

"I came here willing to talk. I was not willing to pretend."

Then I walked to the front door.

Daniel followed me outside.

He caught up with me beside the car.

"You embarrassed me."

I turned toward him.

"I asked your mother to acknowledge what she did."

"You could have handled it more privately."

"We were already having a private conversation."

He opened his mouth, then closed it.

I waited.

Finally, he said, "I don't know how we're supposed to move forward if you won't let this go."

I looked at the house behind him.

"I don't know how we're supposed to move forward if you keep asking me to pretend it never happened."

I got into the passenger seat.

Daniel drove home without speaking.

When we reached the house, he went straight upstairs.

I stayed in the kitchen and filled a glass with water.

My hands were trembling, but I was not ashamed of what I had said.

I had not insulted Eleanor.

I had not raised my voice.

I had asked for a basic acknowledgment of what she had done.

She had refused.

That answer was painful.

It was also clear.

I went upstairs, changed into comfortable clothes, and opened my laptop.

The next day's work was waiting.

I read through the report, made two corrections, and sent it to my manager.

Then I closed the computer.

I did not know what Daniel would do next.

I did know that I could no longer measure the success of a conversation by whether everyone left feeling pleased with me.

Sometimes the truth left people unhappy.

That did not make it wrong.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: Daniel Finally Asked What I Wanted From Him, and My Answer Was Much Simpler Than the Life He Had Been Expecting Me to Maintain

On Sunday morning, Daniel asked whether I had decided what to wear to his mother's house.
