You have not explained why you did it."

Daniel put his mug down.

"Can we not do this right now?"

"When would you like to do it?"

"Not in front of Mom."

I glanced at Eleanor.

"She's the person who did it."

"You're twisting my words," Eleanor said.

I turned back to her.

"Did you use Daniel's clippers on me while I was asleep?"

She pressed her lips together.

"I did what was necessary."

The answer settled between us.

There was no denial.

No confusion.

No suggestion that I had misunderstood what happened.

She believed she had the right to do it.

Daniel looked at the counter.

I waited for him to say something.

He did not.

I picked up my suitcase and carried it upstairs.

Nobody followed me.

I changed out of my travel clothes and placed the scarf on the dresser.

Then I unpacked my laptop, charger, and the folder containing my promotion paperwork.

I set the folder in the desk drawer.

I wanted it somewhere safe, not because I believed Daniel would destroy it, but because I was tired of leaving important things where other people could decide what they meant.

When I returned downstairs, Eleanor had gone into the living room.

Daniel was making himself a sandwich.

He looked irritated when he saw me.

"Are you going to stay angry forever?"

"I don't know how long I will be angry."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the honest one."

He spread mustard on a slice of bread.

"Mom says you embarrassed her by questioning her like that."

I leaned against the doorway.

"She shaved my head while I was sleeping."

"She already said she was trying to make you understand."

"Understand what?"

"That things can't keep going the way they have been."

"Then she could have spoken to me."

"She did speak to you."

"She told me to quit my job."

Daniel pressed the two slices of bread together.

"You know what she meant."

I watched him carry the sandwich to the table.

For a moment, I thought about asking him to explain what he believed a marriage was supposed to look like.

Then I realized I already knew what his answer would probably be.

He wanted a home where meals appeared, clothes were clean, bills were handled, and difficult conversations ended before they required anything from him.

He wanted to feel cared for without having to notice the work involved.

And Eleanor had spent years telling him that was what a good wife did.

"What did you tell your mother before I left?" I asked.

Daniel looked up.

"What?"

"You said you and she had talked about what needed to change. What exactly did you agree on?"

He frowned.

"We talked about the household."

"Which part of the household?"

"You know, everything."

"I don't. Tell me."

He set down his sandwich.

"Mom thinks you're never around anymore. She thinks your job is taking over your life."

"My job is how I pay the mortgage."

"You always bring money into it."

"Because money is part of our household."

He rubbed his forehead.

"I don't want to have another argument."

"Neither do I. I want an honest conversation."

He looked toward the living room, where Eleanor had turned on the television.

Then he lowered his voice.

"Mom said you needed to understand that this family comes first."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"And you agreed?"

"I said we needed to talk about things."

"Did you agree that I should quit?"

"I thought you might consider cutting back."

"Did you tell her I would?"

"No."

"Did you tell her she could make that decision for me?"

"Of course not."

"Then why did you let her believe she could?"

He stared at me.

For a few seconds, he seemed unable to find an answer that would make him sound reasonable.

Finally, he said, "I didn't think she'd go that far."

I had heard versions of that sentence before.

He had not thought she would say something so insulting.

He had not thought she would interfere in our plans.

He had not thought she would make a scene.

Every time Eleanor crossed a line, Daniel claimed he had never expected her to cross it.

But he always seemed to know she was approaching it.

"Did you know she was going to use your clippers?" I asked.

"No."

"Did you know she wanted to punish me for keeping my job?"

He hesitated.

"I knew she was angry."

"That's not what I asked."

"I knew she thought something had to change."

I nodded slowly.

He had not known the exact method.

But he had known the purpose.

And he had done nothing to make it clear that his mother did not have authority over my body or my career.

"Daniel, if I had done that to you, would you think it was acceptable?"

He gave me an incredulous look.

"That's completely different."

"How?"

"I'm a man."

The answer came so quickly that I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because he had finally said the belief that had been sitting underneath every other argument.

He thought the rules were different because we were different.

He believed my responsibility was to accommodate him, while his responsibility was to decide whether my choices suited him.

I straightened.

"I need some time to think about what I want to do next."

His face changed.

"What does that mean?"

"It means I need time."

"Are you threatening to leave?"

"No. I'm telling you I need time."

He pushed the plate away.

"You're making this sound like the end of our marriage."

"I haven't said that."

"Then stop talking like it."

I felt tired all the way through my body.

"I am not going to promise you everything is fine just because that would make you feel better."

He shook his head.

"You've changed."

I thought about the woman I had been before the promotion.

The woman who had agreed to wedding changes she did not want.

The woman who had quietly paid bills because asking Daniel to contribute seemed to create more trouble than covering the expense herself.

The woman who had learned to judge every decision by how Eleanor might react.

Maybe I had changed.

Maybe I had simply stopped pretending that the old arrangement was fair.

"I am trying to be honest," I said.

Then I left him in the kitchen and went upstairs.

I did not slam the door.

I did not cry where he could hear me.

I sat at the desk, opened my laptop, and checked the email from my manager about the next regional planning meeting.

The message contained three questions he wanted me to consider before Friday.

I wrote them on a notepad.

For a while, I worked through each one.

It was a small task, but it reminded me that my life still had a direction beyond the walls of that house.

Later, I heard Eleanor leave.

The front door closed, and Daniel walked upstairs.

He stopped outside the bedroom.

"Are you coming down for dinner?"

"I haven't decided what I'm having."

"Mom already left."

"I heard."

He stood there for a moment.

"There's nothing to eat."

"There's food in the refrigerator."

He looked at me as if I had deliberately misunderstood him.

"You know what I mean."

I did.

He meant there was no meal prepared for him.

There was no one waiting to make the evening easy.

He had been home all day, yet he had expected me to return from a work trip and resume the role Eleanor had assigned me.

I looked back at my laptop.

"You can make something, Daniel."

He did not answer.

A moment later, I heard his footsteps moving down the stairs.

I remained at the desk.

For once, I did not follow him to smooth things over.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: I Began Writing Down What I Paid and What I Did, Because Every Time We Argued, Daniel Made My Memory Sound Like the Problem

My last meeting ended shortly after two the following afternoon.
