What are you going to make?”

He stared at me as though I had asked him to repair the roof.

“I don't know how to make anything with what's here.”

I looked into the refrigerator.

There were eggs.

There were vegetables.

There was bread.

There were leftovers from the previous evening.

“You can make an omelet,” I said.

He frowned.

“I don't want an omelet.”

“Then order something.”

“With whose money?”

The question came out before he seemed to think about it.

I stood very still.

There it was again.

My money.

The money I earned was expected to solve his problems, but the moment I stopped providing something he wanted, he acted as though I had withheld a basic necessity.

“You have your own account,” I said.

He shut the refrigerator.

“Why are you being like this?”

I took my bag upstairs.

I didn't answer.

I knew the conversation would go nowhere.

That evening, I made dinner for myself.

Daniel ordered food.

Eleanor complained that the smell of the delivery disturbed her appetite.

I ate at the kitchen table and listened without responding.

It wasn't a grand act of defiance.

I was simply hungry.

And I had decided that I would no longer treat every complaint as an instruction.

The next morning, I found Daniel in the living room.

He looked tired.

“Mom says you're trying to teach me a lesson.”

I picked up my keys.

“No. I'm trying to stop doing everything for you.”

He followed me toward the door.

“You know I have a lot going on.”

“So do I.”

“Your job isn't the same.”

I turned around.

“Why not?”

He seemed unable to explain.

I waited.

Then I left for work.

The drive gave me time to think about how often Daniel used the phrase a lot going on.

He used it when he forgot something.

He used it when I asked him to help.

He used it when I wanted to discuss money.

His problems always seemed to require patience from me.

Mine required less attention.

At work, I had forty-two direct reports.

Some of them were dealing with difficult clients.

Others were learning new systems or trying to manage teams that had been understaffed for months.

I understood that people had different strengths.

I understood that some needed more guidance than others.

But I also understood that responsibility could not be transferred simply because a person disliked it.

That afternoon, I reviewed a performance report and made several decisions about the coming weeks.

I felt tired when I finished.

But it was the ordinary tiredness of doing work that mattered.

I drove home thinking about dinner.

I had planned to stop at the store, but I decided not to.

There was food in the house.

If Daniel wanted something different, he could arrange it himself.

When I arrived, Eleanor was waiting in the living room.

She stood as soon as I entered.

“Daniel tells me you are refusing to look after him.”

I put my keys on the table.

“I am not refusing to look after anyone.”

“You aren't preparing his meals.”

“He is capable of preparing his own meals.”

“He has never had to do that.”

I looked at her.

“That is not a reason he can never learn.”

Her expression hardened.

“You knew the kind of man he was when you married him.”

I felt the words settle between us.

For years, I had heard that argument in different forms.

I had known he was forgetful.

I had known he relied on his mother.

I had known he wasn't particularly interested in household chores.

Because I had known those things, Eleanor believed I had agreed to accept them forever.

“I knew Daniel needed help sometimes,” I said. “I did not agree to become responsible for every part of his life.”

She shook her head.

“You are making him miserable.”

I glanced toward the stairs.

Daniel was standing near the landing.

He had heard us.

I looked back at Eleanor.

“If he is miserable because I expect him to take responsibility for himself, then we need to discuss why.”

She stared at me.

Then she turned toward the stairs.

“Daniel, come here.”

He came down slowly.

Eleanor placed a hand on his arm.

“Tell your wife this cannot continue.”

Daniel looked at me.

I waited.

He swallowed.

“I wish things could go back to the way they were.”

I nodded.

“So do you want me to go back to paying for everything, doing everything, and staying quiet when your mother humiliates me?”

He looked down.

“That's not what I said.”

“Then tell me what you mean.”

He remained silent.

Eleanor tightened her grip on his arm.

“You are being deliberately difficult.”

I took my keys from the table.

“I am going upstairs.”

Daniel followed me halfway up.

“Please don't walk away every time we talk.”

I stopped.

“I am not walking away because the conversation is difficult. I am walking away because neither of you is listening.”

He looked as though he wanted to argue.

Then he said, “I don't know how to fix this.”

I turned toward him.

“Start by admitting that what happened to me was wrong.”

He hesitated.

His eyes moved toward his mother.

I watched him make the choice he had made so many times before.

He did not answer.

I continued upstairs.

That night, I opened the folder again.

The budget had not changed.

The mortgage was still due.

The bills were still there.

I reviewed the numbers and made sure the next payments were covered.

Then I closed the folder and placed it in the drawer.

I was not going to use money to frighten Daniel.

I was not going to threaten him with the house.

I simply needed to understand what I could afford and what decisions I might eventually have to make.

The following morning, I confirmed my schedule for the next several weeks.

The regional role would involve travel and long days.

I would need to be organized.

I would need to rest when I could.

And I would need to stop letting problems at home consume every hour that belonged to me.

I tied the scarf around my head and looked in the mirror.

The woman looking back at me was still tired.

But she no longer looked confused.

I had spent years believing that love meant finding a way to carry someone else's burdens.

Now I was learning that love could not require me to disappear beneath them.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: Eleanor Kept Calling My Job the Enemy, Until I Began to See How Much Her Son Depended on the Life She Wanted Me to Give Up

The first week in my new role was harder than I expected.
