You do have to let me decide when I'm ready."

He said he could not keep waiting indefinitely.

I paused.

"Then you will have to decide what you can live with. I cannot give you a date I don't mean."

He went quiet.

I could tell he was unhappy.

I was unhappy, too.

But our unhappiness did not mean I had to change my answer.

Eventually, he said he had to go.

I told him to take care.

The call ended.

I placed the phone on the counter and leaned against the sink.

My breathing was a little shallow.

I took my time before moving again.

I had learned that an emotional argument could leave me physically exhausted, even when I had not raised my voice.

I sat down and rested.

After a while, I made myself some toast.

I ate slowly, then cleared the table.

I did not want the rest of the day to become an extension of the phone call.

There were ordinary things I wanted to do.

I needed to check my mail.

I needed to straighten a shelf.

I wanted to read for a while.

I did those things one at a time.

In the afternoon, I found an old photograph tucked between two papers in a drawer.

It showed Deacon as a young boy standing beside me.

His shirt was too large, and his smile was wide enough to make his eyes nearly disappear.

I remembered the day it was taken.

We had not had much money, but we had gone out for a simple meal.

He had talked all the way home.

I had listened to every word.

I held the photograph for a long time.

I did not want to turn my son into nothing but the worst thing he had done.

He was still the child I had raised.

He was also the adult who had hit me.

Both truths belonged to our history.

I placed the photograph back in the drawer.

Then I closed it.

I did not need to throw away the past to protect myself in the present.

That evening, I received a short message from Deacon.

He said he hoped I was all right.

I answered that I was taking care of myself.

He did not reply.

I left the phone on the counter and went to prepare dinner.

While I chopped vegetables, I thought about how much energy I had spent trying to make him understand that I still loved him.

I had begun to see that my love was not in question.

My willingness to visit was not the measure of it.

I could love him from my own home.

I could wish him well without agreeing to a situation that made me uncomfortable.

I could hope for reconciliation without pretending that reconciliation had already happened.

Those ideas had once seemed harsh to me.

Now they seemed practical.

After dinner, I washed the dishes.

I wiped the counter and turned off the light.

Then I checked that my phone was charging beside the bed.

I did not expect a call.

I did not fear one, either.

If Deacon contacted me, I would decide how to respond when I saw what he had said.

I did not need to prepare an answer for every possible conversation.

I lay down and listened to the quiet apartment.

For many years, I had thought a mother's job was to keep the door open no matter what happened.

I was beginning to understand that an open door did not mean I had to stand in the doorway and accept being hurt.

The door could remain open.

I could still choose when to answer it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: I Had Always Been the One to Repair Our Arguments, but This Time I Let My Son Experience the Silence He Had Helped Create

The next day, Deacon sent a message early in the morning.
