12 – When Deacon Began Worrying About Who Knew the Truth, I Finally Stopped Mistaking His Fear of Consequences for Remorse

The next morning, I found myself thinking about the last call.

Deacon had sounded frightened, but not frightened for me.

He had wanted to know who knew what he had done.

That difference stayed with me while I prepared breakfast.

I toasted a piece of bread and spread a little butter across it.

Then I carried my plate to the kitchen table.

The cardboard beneath the uneven leg had shifted again.

I bent to straighten it, but the movement made me lightheaded.

I sat back down and waited until the feeling passed.

I had learned to respect those small warnings from my body.

My lungs did not care whether I was upset with my son.

They did not become stronger because I wanted to finish a task.

I had to pay attention.

After breakfast, I took my medication and wrote down how I had been feeling.

I wanted to be honest with myself about my breathing.

The smoke in Sloan's kitchen had affected me, and the stress afterward had made it harder to rest.

I did not need to turn that into a dramatic story.

I needed to take it seriously.

I spent part of the morning sorting papers in a drawer.

There were receipts, old appointment cards, instruction booklets, and envelopes I had saved for reasons I could no longer remember.

I made a small pile for things to keep and another for things to throw away.

It was ordinary work.

Still, I found myself noticing how often I had held on to things because I thought I might need them someday.

Old receipts.

Broken pens.

Messages that had hurt me.

Apologies that had never quite arrived.

I paused with a faded envelope in my hand.

I had saved a birthday card from Deacon years ago.

His handwriting had been uneven, and he had drawn a crooked little heart beside my name.

I remembered the pride I had felt when he gave it to me.

I had kept it through several moves.

I had never questioned why.

I placed it in the box of things I wanted to preserve.

The card was part of our history.

So was the slap.

Keeping one memory did not require me to deny the other.

By midday, I had finished sorting the drawer.

I took the rubbish out and returned to the apartment.

The phone was quiet.

I did not know whether Deacon was at work or at home.

I did not know whether Sloan had spoken to him about me.

I did not know what either of them had decided to say to other people.

I could have spent hours imagining conversations I had not heard.

Instead, I put the kettle on.

When it began to whistle, I turned off the heat.

I poured the water slowly and carried the cup to the table.

For years, I had treated uncertainty as a problem I had to solve immediately.

If Deacon was angry, I tried to discover why.

If he stopped calling, I wondered what I had done.

If he seemed unhappy, I looked for a way to make things easier.

I had believed that paying close attention would protect our relationship.

But I could not manage another adult's feelings for him.

I could only decide how I responded to his actions.

That afternoon, another message arrived.

Deacon wrote that he wanted us to move past the incident.

He said he did not want this to damage our relationship.

I read the message twice.

The words were familiar.

Moving past something had often meant refusing to discuss it.

In our family, an argument could end without anyone admitting what had happened.

The person who was hurt was expected to accept the end of the argument as proof that everything was fine.

I had done that for years.

I was no longer willing to do it automatically.

I typed a reply.

I said that I wanted our relationship to be better, too.

I said that moving forward required honesty about what had happened.

I said I could not pretend that being struck was an ordinary disagreement.

I read the message before sending it.

My first draft had been longer.

It contained explanations about my health, my age, and the way I had felt when I left his house.

I removed most of those sentences.

I did not need to persuade him that I deserved not to be hit.

I sent the shorter message.

His response came quickly.

He asked what I expected him to do.

I stared at the screen.

Part of me wanted to list every step.

Apologize without blaming me.

Acknowledge that the slap was wrong.

Understand that my breathing mattered.

Make sure it never happened again.

Those were reasonable things to want.

But I could not force sincerity by writing a perfect set of instructions.

I answered that I expected him to take responsibility for what he had done.

Then I put the phone away.

I walked to the window and opened it a little.

The street below was busy.

A delivery truck stopped near the curb.

Someone carried two bags into the building next door.

A child called out to a parent.

Ordinary sounds filled the afternoon.

I stood there until I felt calm enough to return to the table.

The next call came later than I expected.

I answered after the second ring.

"Mom, I don't understand why you keep bringing this up."

I closed my eyes briefly.

"I have not been bringing it up to everyone. We are talking about it because you keep asking me to move on without acknowledging what happened."

"I told you I was angry."

"You have told me that many times."

"What else do you want me to say?"

"I want you to say that hitting me was wrong."

He was quiet.

I waited.

The silence stretched long enough that I could hear a faint electronic sound on his end.

Then he said, "Fine. It was wrong."

The words came out quickly.

I held the phone a little tighter.

"Do you mean that?"

"Yes, Mom. What do you want from me now?"

I felt a small opening in the conversation close again.

He had said the words, but he was already treating them as a payment that should settle everything.

"I want you to understand why it matters," I said.

"I just said it was wrong."

"And I heard you."

"Then can we stop talking about it?"

I looked at the table.

The cardboard was visible beneath the leg.

I could have said yes.

I could have accepted the sentence and hoped that the next time he became angry, he would remember it.

But I had made that bargain with myself too many times.

"I am willing to stop arguing," I said. "I am not willing to pretend that saying one sentence means everything is repaired."

He breathed out heavily.

"So nothing I say is good enough."

"That is not what I said."

"It feels like it."

"I cannot decide what you mean by your words. I can only listen to them."

He said I was making things difficult.

I felt the old urge to soothe him.

Instead, I told him I needed to end the call.

He did not like that.

I could hear it in his voice.

But I said goodbye and ended the conversation.

For several minutes, I sat with both hands resting on the table.

My heart was beating faster than usual.

I drank some water and took slow, comfortable breaths.

I was not proud of making my son uncomfortable.

I was not trying to teach him a lesson.

I was trying to stop abandoning my own needs whenever he became upset.

There was a difference.

That evening, I prepared a simple meal and ate it at the table.

I washed the plate afterward and turned off the kitchen light.

Before bed, I checked my phone one last time.

There was no new message.

I put it on the nightstand.

Then I lay down and adjusted the pillow until my breathing felt comfortable.

I still loved Deacon.

That had not changed.

What had changed was my belief that love required me to accept whatever he was willing to give me.

I could miss him without calling him.

I could hope he would change without pretending he already had.

I could leave room for a better relationship without opening the door to the same treatment.

Those things could exist together.

I turned off the bedside lamp.

The apartment became quiet.

For the first time since the slap, I did not spend the last minutes of the day rehearsing what I might say to make my son understand.

I let tomorrow remain tomorrow.

And I allowed myself to rest.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: I Thought My Son Had Finally Admitted What He Did, Until I Realized He Still Wanted Me to Make Everything Easy for Him

The next morning, I found myself thinking about the last call.
