I said.

He was quiet for a moment.

"That's not what I meant to happen."

I took a slow breath.

"Did you mean to hit me?"

He did not answer immediately.

"I was angry."

"That doesn't answer my question."

"Mom, you know how things got heated."

"I know what happened."

He exhaled sharply.

I could picture him moving around his expensive kitchen, perhaps standing near the counter where the cigarette had burned down.

I could picture Sloan nearby.

I could not know what either of them was thinking.

I could only listen to the words he chose.

"You're making me sound like some kind of monster," he said.

"I haven't called you anything."

"But you're acting like I deliberately hurt you."

"You struck me."

"I know that."

"Then why can't you say you're sorry?"

He went quiet again.

For a moment, I thought he might finally say it.

Instead, he told me that he had a lot going on.

He talked about pressure at work.

He talked about the tension at home.

He said he had been trying to keep everyone happy.

I listened without interrupting.

Some of what he said might have been true.

Life was difficult for most people.

Responsibilities piled up.

Money caused arguments.

Marriages had problems.

None of those things changed what he had done.

When he finished, I spoke carefully.

"I can listen to you talk about your problems, Deacon. But I will not accept them as an excuse for you to hit me."

"I didn't say it was an excuse."

"You keep explaining why you were angry. You still haven't apologized."

He made a frustrated sound.

"I don't know what you want from me."

"I want you to acknowledge what you did without blaming me for it."

"I already told you I was angry."

"That isn't the same thing."

The words sounded steadier than I felt.

I held the edge of the table with my free hand.

My lungs tightened slightly, and I waited until the feeling passed before continuing.

"I also want you to understand that I asked Sloan to smoke outside because of my breathing. I wasn't trying to control your house."

"She can do what she wants in her own home."

"That doesn't mean I have to sit in cigarette smoke when it harms me."

"Then you should have left."

I stared at the wall.

The sentence landed harder than I expected.

He had found a way to make the solution my responsibility.

I should have left sooner.

I should have said nothing.

I should have accepted the smoke.

I should have understood his temper.

There was always another thing I supposedly should have done.

"I did leave," I said.

"Exactly."

"And you hit me before I could."

He fell silent.

I could hear a faint sound on his end of the call.

A cabinet closing, perhaps.

Then he said he did not want to fight with me.

"Neither do I," I answered.

"Then let's stop."

"We can stop arguing. That doesn't mean the problem has disappeared."

He sighed.

I heard him say my name in the tone he had used since childhood whenever he wanted me to soften.

I knew that tone well.

It had worked on me more times than I could count.

This time, I stayed quiet.

Finally, he asked whether I was planning to tell people what happened.

I looked down at the phone.

There it was.

Not concern for my health.

Not concern about the swelling on my face.

He wanted to know who might find out.

"I haven't decided what I want to share," I said.

"You don't need to tell everyone our business."

"I understand that."

"Then why are you doing this?"

"I am not doing anything to you, Deacon. I am telling you what happened to me."

He did not answer.

I felt a familiar ache in my chest, but it was not the same tightness that came with breathing problems.

It was the sadness of hearing my son worry about his reputation before he worried about his mother.

"I need to go," I said.

"Mom—"

"I am not ready to continue this conversation."

He started to speak again, but I ended the call.

For a while, I sat without moving.

My hand rested on the table beside the phone.

I did not feel victorious.

I did not feel as though I had won anything.

I had wanted my son to understand me, and once again he had shown me how much he wanted me to understand him instead.

I put the phone in my purse.

Then I finished my sandwich.

It was a small thing, but I wanted to finish something I had started without allowing his anger to decide what happened next.

Afterward, I rinsed my plate.

I wiped the counter.

I straightened the dish towel.

The same ordinary chores waited for me, and I did them one at a time.

That evening, I did not call Deacon back.

I did not send another explanation.

I did not write a long message describing every reason his behavior had hurt me.

I had already told him the essential truth.

The next step belonged to him.

I could not make him take it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: I Had Spent Years Believing That Family Problems Should Stay Private, Until I Understood the Difference Between Privacy and Silence

Deacon's reply came while I was putting groceries away.
