7 – I Had Expected My Son to Be Worried About Me, but the Longer My Phone Stayed Silent, the More Clearly I Saw Our Relationship

The silence continued.

I checked my phone once more, then forced myself to leave it alone.

I didn't want to spend the entire afternoon measuring my worth by whether Deacon contacted me.

That was an old habit, too.

When he was young, I worried whenever he was late coming home.

As he grew older, the worries changed.

I worried about his work, his choices, his relationships, and whether the world would treat him fairly.

Even after he became an adult, I carried a part of his life inside my mind as though I were still responsible for keeping every danger away.

I had told myself that mothers never stopped worrying.

That was true enough.

But I had also used worry as a reason to excuse behavior that hurt me.

I had believed that if I stayed patient, he would eventually recognize my efforts.

Perhaps he would have.

Perhaps he wouldn't.

I could no longer spend my life waiting for that recognition.

I found a quiet place to sit and rested my purse beside me.

The small mirror inside it had shifted, and I could feel its hard edge through the fabric.

I took it out again.

My cheek looked worse than it had earlier.

The skin was swollen, and the mark was impossible to ignore.

I examined it without touching it.

Then I put the mirror away.

I didn't want to turn the injury into a private secret I carried around while everyone else went on with their lives.

I also didn't want to make decisions based only on the mark.

The slap itself was enough.

Even if my face had shown no sign of it, what Deacon had done would still have mattered.

I had to remind myself of that because I knew how easily I could minimize things once the immediate pain faded.

I had done it before.

I had forgiven words that stayed with me for weeks.

I had overlooked moments when I felt dismissed.

I had told myself that family members sometimes behaved badly when they were tired or upset.

All of those things could be true without making the behavior acceptable.

That was the distinction I needed to hold on to.

I took a drink of water and waited.

My breathing was steadier now.

I could feel the exhaustion settling into my shoulders, and I wanted nothing more than to lie down somewhere comfortable.

But I wasn't ready to return to Deacon's house.

The thought of walking back into that kitchen made my stomach tighten.

I could picture Sloan standing beside the sink with her cigarette.

I could picture Deacon watching me as though I were an irritation he wanted removed.

I didn't know whether either of them regretted what happened.

I only knew that I wasn't ready to find out by putting myself back in the same situation.

For years, I had believed that leaving a disagreement unresolved was a failure.

I thought a good mother should always be willing to talk things through.

I thought distance meant the relationship was falling apart.

Now I wondered whether a little distance might be necessary for the relationship to become honest.

I needed time to think without being interrupted.

I needed to understand what I wanted before Deacon's anger or disappointment influenced my answer.

And I needed to accept that he might not like the decision I made.

I could not control that.

The thought brought a strange sense of calm.

I had spent years trying to find the perfect words for difficult conversations.

If I spoke gently enough, I thought, perhaps nobody would become defensive.

If I explained my reasons clearly enough, perhaps nobody would accuse me of being unreasonable.

But there was no perfect sentence that could guarantee another person's kindness.

I had learned that in the kitchen.

I could not control how Deacon responded to a simple request.

I could only decide what I would do when his response crossed a line.

That was a more difficult kind of responsibility.

It was also the only kind that truly belonged to me.

I thought about the life I wanted for the years ahead.

I wanted to keep my routines.

I wanted to look after my health.

I wanted to spend time with people who did not make me feel guilty for having needs.

I wanted to be able to tell the truth about my life without worrying that someone would accuse me of damaging the family's reputation.

Most of all, I wanted to stop feeling that I had to earn the right to be treated decently.

I had earned nothing by suffering.

I had simply suffered.

And I had survived.

Those were different things.

My phone vibrated suddenly.

I reached for it before I could stop myself.

The movement was instinctive.

I looked at the screen.

For one brief second, hope rose in me.

Then I saw that the notification was not the message I had been waiting for.

I set the phone down.

I felt foolish for having hoped.

But I didn't blame myself.

A mother could still want to hear from her son even after he had hurt her.

Love did not disappear on command.

Neither did disappointment.

I had to make room for both.

I thought about calling Deacon again.

I imagined asking him whether he understood what he had done.

I imagined telling him that I was hurt, frightened, and ashamed that I had ever felt afraid in his presence.

But I could already hear myself softening the message before I finished speaking.

I would tell him that I knew he had been stressed.

I would say that I didn't want to make trouble for him.

I would assure him that I wasn't trying to interfere with his marriage.

And somewhere in that conversation, my own pain would become a small detail beneath the larger task of making him feel better.

I knew that pattern.

I had lived inside it for years.

I wasn't ready to return to it.

If Deacon wanted to speak with me, he could call.

If he wanted to apologize, he could say so without being led through every step.

If he wanted to understand why the slap had changed things, I would explain.

But I would not beg him to care.

That was the promise I made to myself.

It wasn't a grand promise.

It didn't solve anything.

It simply gave me something to hold on to while the afternoon moved forward.

I stood and walked a short distance before sitting again.

My body needed rest, and I was learning not to argue with that need.

When I was younger, I could push through exhaustion because I had to.

There had been bills to pay and a child depending on me.

I had often treated rest as a luxury I couldn't afford.

Now my lungs reminded me that the body kept its own record.

I could not demand that it function as though I were thirty.

I could not keep ignoring warning signs because I was afraid someone might find my needs inconvenient.

I had to care for myself.

That was not selfishness.

It was survival.

The same principle applied to my relationship with Deacon.

I could not continue pretending that my feelings didn't matter because he had become an adult with a life of his own.

I had a life of my own, too.

It might look quieter than his.

It might involve more doctor visits and more careful planning.

But it still belonged to me.

I was allowed to protect it.

As the afternoon continued, I stopped checking my phone every few minutes.

I focused on breathing slowly and keeping my thoughts from circling endlessly around the kitchen.

The pain remained.

So did the love.

But something else had begun to grow alongside them.

Resolve.

I did not know whether Deacon would understand what had changed.

I did not know whether he would apologize.

I did not know how long it would take for the shock to fade.

I only knew that I had reached a point where silence could no longer be my automatic response to being hurt.

If our relationship was going to survive, it would have to survive the truth.

And if it could not, then I would have to learn how to live with that loss.

I wished it were different.

I wished I could return to the morning before the visit, when I still believed that my son would never deliberately make me afraid of him.

But wishing could not undo the afternoon.

I gathered my purse and prepared to leave the place where I had been sitting.

My cheek was still swollen.

My lungs were still damaged.

And my relationship with Deacon was no longer something I could describe as uncomplicated.

I was sad about that.

I was also done pretending otherwise.

<a
