6 – The First Time I Considered That My Silence Had Helped Him, I Finally Understood Why Another Apology Would Not Be Enough

I eventually stood and began making my way toward a quieter place.

I walked slowly because my body was still recovering from the shock.

The swelling on my cheek had not disappeared, and I could feel a dull ache whenever I turned my head.

I kept my purse close.

It was an ordinary thing to hold, but I liked the familiar weight of it.

My life had become uncertain in the space of a few minutes.

The purse, the phone inside it, and the keys in its small pocket were reminders that I still had choices.

I could decide where to go.

I could decide whom to call.

I could decide whether to answer if Deacon tried to reach me.

Those decisions had always belonged to me.

I had simply spent years allowing my fear of disappointing him to influence them.

I found a place to rest again and sat down.

The first thing I did was check my breathing.

It was better than it had been in the kitchen.

I still felt tired, but the tightness in my chest had eased enough for me to think clearly.

I sat with my hands folded in my lap.

For a while, I watched the movement of people passing by.

Then I returned to the question I had been avoiding.

Had I helped create the situation in which Deacon believed he could treat me this way?

The thought was uncomfortable.

I didn't want to blame myself for being struck.

I knew I wasn't responsible for the decision he had made.

But I also knew that I had spent years protecting him from difficult conversations.

When he spoke sharply, I told myself he was stressed.

When he dismissed my concerns, I reminded myself that he had a busy life.

When he acted as though my needs were inconvenient, I tried to need less.

I had believed I was helping him.

Perhaps I had also been teaching him that my feelings could always be postponed.

I could not change the past by thinking about it.

Still, I needed to understand the part of the pattern that belonged to me.

Not because I deserved what happened.

Because I didn't want to spend the rest of my life repeating the same mistakes.

I remembered the first time Deacon had brought Sloan to meet me.

I had wanted her to like me.

I had wanted my son to feel that the two most important women in his life could get along.

I paid attention to what she liked and tried to make her comfortable.

If she made a comment I found unkind, I let it pass.

If Deacon interrupted me while I was speaking, I changed the subject.

I told myself that small compromises were part of being welcoming.

There was nothing wrong with trying to make someone comfortable.

The trouble began when I started believing that their comfort mattered more than my own.

I had made that mistake gradually.

No single moment seemed important enough to challenge.

But little habits could become expectations when nobody questioned them.

By the time I stood in that kitchen asking Sloan not to smoke, I had become so accustomed to avoiding conflict that even a simple request felt like a risk.

I had hesitated before speaking.

I had softened my voice.

I had explained my medical condition as though I needed to prove that my discomfort was real.

And even then, my son had decided I was asking for too much.

I closed my eyes.

I could not take responsibility for his violence.

But I could take responsibility for what I chose to accept from that point forward.

That was the difference I needed to remember.

My phone remained quiet.

I was grateful for the silence.

I didn't think I could handle an argument with Deacon yet.

I needed time to settle myself before I heard his voice again.

I wanted to believe that he would eventually understand the seriousness of what he had done.

I wanted to believe that he would be ashamed.

But wanting those things did not mean I could count on them.

I had to stop building my decisions around the person I hoped he might become.

I needed to respond to the person he had shown himself to be that afternoon.

That did not mean deciding he could never change.

It meant refusing to pretend that change had already happened.

I rested my hands on my knees.

My fingers were no longer trembling as badly.

I took a slow breath and looked at the ground.

There was a small piece of paper near my shoe.

A breeze moved it a few inches, then left it still.

I watched it longer than I needed to.

It was easier than looking at my phone.

I wondered whether Deacon had begun to realize I was serious.

Perhaps he was still in the kitchen, telling Sloan that I had overreacted.

Perhaps he was angry that I had left without apologizing.

Perhaps neither of them had given the incident another thought.

I could not know.

And I was beginning to understand that I didn't have to know every thought passing through his mind.

I had spent years trying to predict his reactions so I could prevent disagreements before they happened.

That habit had exhausted me.

It had also left little room for my own feelings.

I was tired of trying to manage his emotions while ignoring mine.

If he was angry, he could be angry.

If he felt embarrassed, he could deal with that feeling.

If he believed I had betrayed him by telling someone what happened, he could examine why the truth felt like betrayal.

I did not have to solve those problems for him.

I had already done enough.

I thought about my age.

At seventy-three, I had fewer years ahead of me than behind me.

I didn't know exactly how many.

Nobody did.

But I knew I didn't want to spend whatever time remained trying to convince my own child that I deserved basic consideration.

I wanted quieter days.

I wanted to breathe without fear of making someone uncomfortable.

I wanted conversations in which I could speak honestly.

I wanted to remember my son without having to excuse the man he had become.

Those wishes were simple.

They were also important.

I had worked hard to reach old age.

I had endured years of worry and physical exhaustion.

I had made sacrifices that seemed necessary at the time because I believed they were helping Deacon build a better life.

I wanted to enjoy whatever peace I could still find.

I didn't want that peace to depend on his mood.

A memory came back to me.

When Deacon was young, he once asked whether I would always help him if he got into trouble.

I had told him yes.

At the time, I meant that I would never stop loving him.

I had not meant that I would take responsibility for every choice he made.

But perhaps he had grown up hearing only the first part.

Perhaps I had spent so long proving my devotion that I had forgotten to teach him where it ended.

I couldn't change what he had learned.

I could only show him that love did not mean unlimited permission.

That lesson might make him angry.

It might create distance between us.

It might force us to confront things we had avoided for years.

But the alternative was to keep living the way we had been living.

I could no longer accept that.

I reached into my purse and took out my phone.

The screen lit up beneath my thumb.

There was still no message from Deacon.

I stared at his name in my contacts.

I loved him.

That was the hardest part.

If I had stopped loving him, the decision might have felt simple.

But I hadn't stopped.

I still remembered his childhood laugh.

I still remembered the way he used to fall asleep while I read to him.

I still wanted him to be happy.

I simply could no longer confuse his happiness with my obligation to stay silent.

I put the phone away.

I wasn't ready to call him.

And I didn't owe him an immediate conversation.

For the first time, I allowed myself to leave the silence where it was.

I didn't fill it with an apology.

I didn't use it to rehearse excuses.

I didn't turn it into a punishment either.

I simply let it be a little space in which I could think.

That was enough.

I stood and adjusted my purse.

The afternoon had not become easier, but I felt more certain about one thing.

Whatever happened between Deacon and me next, I would not pretend that his hand had never touched my face.

I would not let the memory be rewritten into a harmless disagreement.

And I would not accept another apology that required me to forget what had happened before he had taken responsibility for it.

I had spent too many years trying to keep him comfortable.

Now it was time to find out whether he could face an uncomfortable truth.

<a
