2 – I Had Spent Decades Making Excuses for Deacon, but the Silence After His Slap Forced Me to Face What He Had Become

I made it out of the kitchen without falling.

That was the first thing I remember feeling grateful for.

The hallway seemed longer than it had when I arrived.

My face throbbed with every step, and my breathing remained uneven.

I wanted to sit down.

I wanted someone to bring me a glass of water.

Most of all, I wanted to be somewhere the air didn't make my chest tighten.

Behind me, I heard Deacon say something to Sloan.

I couldn't make out the words.

Neither of them followed me.

I reached the front door and paused with my hand on the handle.

For a moment, I considered turning around.

It was an old habit, one I had carried for decades.

Whenever there was a disagreement, I was the one who tried to settle it.

Whenever Deacon became upset, I searched for the words that would calm him.

Whenever he made a mistake, I found a way to explain it to myself.

I had convinced myself that keeping peace was the same as keeping a family together.

That day, I wasn't sure I believed it anymore.

I opened the door.

Cool air touched my face.

I stepped outside and took the deepest breath I could manage.

It still hurt, but at least the air was clear.

I stood on the porch for several seconds, holding my purse against my side.

The house behind me was beautiful.

I had said so the first time I visited after Deacon and Sloan moved in.

The windows were large, the landscaping carefully maintained, and the front entrance looked as though nobody had ever tracked dirt across it.

Deacon had been proud of the place.

He had shown me every room and pointed out the expensive details.

I remembered smiling because his happiness mattered to me.

I remembered thinking that perhaps all those difficult years had finally led somewhere good.

I had never imagined that I would leave his home with a burning cheek and a trembling hand.

I moved toward the driveway.

My legs felt weak, so I walked slowly.

There was no reason to hurry.

No one inside was going to come after me and apologize.

I knew that now.

By the time I reached the end of the driveway, my cheek had begun to swell.

I touched it lightly and winced.

I had never been afraid of Deacon before.

Disappointed in him, yes.

Worried about him, certainly.

But afraid?

That was something new.

And I hated that feeling.

I had been the person he ran to when he was frightened.

I had been the person who stood between him and whatever he believed might hurt him.

Now I was measuring my movements because I didn't know what he might do next.

I kept walking.

The distance between his house and the street was not far, but it felt like crossing into a different life.

I stopped beside the road and tried to steady my breathing.

My lungs were not the only thing that had become difficult to manage.

My thoughts were racing.

Part of me wanted to call someone and tell them what had happened.

Another part wanted to pretend the afternoon had gone differently.

I could already hear the questions.

What did you say to him?

Were you arguing?

Are you sure he meant to hit you?

Those questions might not have been fair, but I had heard enough conversations about family disputes to know how quickly blame could be shifted onto the person who had been hurt.

I didn't want to defend myself.

I didn't want to explain why asking for clean air had not been an insult.

I didn't want to make a case for deserving basic respect.

I was seventy-three years old.

I shouldn't have needed to.

I reached for my phone.

My fingers hesitated over the screen.

There were several people I could have called, but I knew that the call I needed to make was not going to be an ordinary one.

It would force me to acknowledge what had happened.

It would also force me to stop pretending that my relationship with Deacon could be repaired by my patience alone.

I lowered the phone.

Not yet.

I needed a moment to think.

I looked back at the house.

From where I stood, it appeared exactly as it had before.

The windows reflected the afternoon light.

The lawn was neat.

Nothing about the property suggested that anything terrible had happened inside.

That was how violence often looked from the outside, I realized.

An ordinary house.

An ordinary afternoon.

A person leaving quietly because the person who hurt them was someone they had spent a lifetime loving.

I turned away.

I thought about Deacon as a little boy.

He had once come home from school with a torn shirt and a split lip.

He had tried to tell me that he had fallen, but I knew he was hiding something.

When I asked again, he finally admitted that another boy had pushed him.

I remembered washing his face at our kitchen table.

I remembered him gripping my wrist while I cleaned the cut.

"Does it hurt?" I had asked.

"A little."

I had kissed the top of his head.

"You don't have to pretend with me."

He had believed me then.

He had trusted me enough to show me when he was hurting.

Standing on the roadside years later, I wondered when that trust had turned into contempt.

I wondered whether it had happened gradually, one small act at a time, while I kept telling myself that everything was normal.

There had been moments I should have paid attention to.

The impatient way he sometimes answered my questions.

The way he would interrupt me when Sloan was speaking.

The way he seemed embarrassed whenever I mentioned the apartment where he had grown up.

I had noticed those things.

I had simply decided they didn't matter.

He was successful now.

He had a comfortable home, a wife, and a life that looked nothing like the one I had struggled to provide for him.

I had wanted him to be proud of himself.

I had never wanted him to be ashamed of where he came from.

Perhaps I had been so afraid of making him feel guilty about his childhood that I had allowed him to forget what it had cost.

I couldn't know for certain.

But I knew what he had done.

That was enough for the moment.

I started walking again.

My phone vibrated inside my purse, and I stopped to check it.

For a second, I hoped it might be Deacon.

I imagined a message saying he was sorry.

I imagined him asking whether I had reached somewhere safe.

I imagined him admitting that he had lost control and had no excuse for what happened.

The screen showed nothing like that.

I put the phone away.

It was a small disappointment, but it hurt more than I expected.

Even after everything, some part of me had been waiting for him to become the son I remembered.

I had to stop expecting an apology simply because I needed one.

The realization left me feeling strangely empty.

I had spent so much time trying to preserve our relationship that I had never considered what I would do if preserving it required me to accept being hurt.

Now I had to consider it.

I reached a place where I could stop without blocking anyone's way.

My breathing had settled a little, though every few moments I still felt a tightness in my chest.

I knew I needed to be careful.

My doctor had explained my condition plainly.

My lungs were damaged, and there was no reason to expose them to anything that made breathing harder.

Smoke was one of the things I had been told to avoid.

That was why I had asked Sloan to take her cigarette outside.

Not to challenge her.

Not to control her.

Not to remind her that I was older than she was.

I had asked because I needed to breathe.

The simplicity of that fact made what happened feel even more cruel.

I opened my purse again and took out my phone.

This time, I didn't put it away.

I stared at the screen and thought about the life I had built before Deacon became the center of every decision.

I had worked hard.

I had survived difficult years.

I had made sacrifices because I believed they would help my son build a better future.

But I had never promised him that he could treat me however he wanted in exchange.

I had never made that agreement.

I had simply behaved as though I had.

My thumb hovered over the screen.

I was afraid of what the call would mean.

I was afraid of the consequences.

And, if I was honest, I was afraid that taking action would finally destroy the little bit of family I had left.

Then I remembered the expression on Deacon's face after he hit me.

There had been no shock.

No immediate regret.

He hadn't looked like a man who had done something he couldn't believe.

He had looked like a man who expected me to accept it.

That memory settled the matter.

I could love my son and still refuse to protect him from the truth.

I could remember the child he had been without pretending that the man he had become was harmless.

I drew one careful breath.

Then I opened my contacts.

My hand was steadier now.

I found the number I needed and pressed it.

The phone began to ring.

For the first time that afternoon, I wasn't calling to ask someone to help me keep the peace.

I was calling because the peace had already been broken.

And I wasn't going to be the only person expected to live with the consequences.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: Fifteen Minutes Had Not Yet Passed, and I Was Finally Ready to Make the
