Before it, everything would be familiar. After it, everything would be different.

Instead, the change had come while the coffee still needed making, the bills still needed paying, and the laundry still needed folding.

One evening, Daniel asked if I had time to talk.

I closed my laptop.

"Yes."

He sat across from me at the kitchen table.

"I think we need to stop putting off the next step."

I took a moment before answering.

"What next step do you mean?"

"We need to accept that we're separating and start making arrangements."

I nodded.

"I agree that we need to make arrangements."

His shoulders relaxed slightly.

"Good. That's all I've been trying to get you to understand."

I looked at him.

"Don't turn this into something it isn't."

His expression changed.

"What does that mean?"

"It means that agreeing we need to make arrangements does not mean I agree with how you've handled everything."

"I didn't say that."

"You said that's all you've been trying to get me to understand. But I understood your decision from the first evening. What I needed was time to understand my own."

He looked away.

"All right."

I continued.

"I'm prepared to move forward. I'm not prepared to pretend that the last few weeks haven't happened."

"I don't expect you to forget."

"Then we should be able to discuss the practical matters without you reminding me that you want to move on."

He nodded.

For once, he didn't argue over the wording.

We began talking about the things that needed attention.

We discussed our regular expenses and the records we had kept during the loan payments. We agreed that important financial information should be organized rather than left scattered across the house.

Neither of us had every answer.

There were questions about our circumstances that required careful consideration, and I wasn't willing to make assumptions simply because we both wanted the situation settled.

I made a note of the items we needed to review.

Daniel watched me write.

"You've always been organized."

"I've had to be."

He gave a small nod.

For a moment, I remembered how often he had praised that quality when his business was struggling.

He had trusted me to organize the payments, keep track of the deadlines, and help him understand what remained to be done.

Now I was using the same ability to organize my own future.

It felt strange to realize that the person I had been before his confession had not disappeared.

I was still the woman who could look at a difficult situation, identify the immediate problems, and begin working through them.

I simply had a different reason to do it now.

When we finished, Daniel looked at the notes.

"That seems manageable."

"It is manageable if we deal with one thing at a time."

He nodded.

"I wish we could have handled all of this differently."

"So do I."

He looked at me.

"Do you think there's any chance we could eventually be friends?"

I hadn't expected that question.

I considered it carefully.

"I don't know."

He seemed disappointed.

"I thought you might say yes."

"I can't promise you something I don't know whether I can give."

"But I don't want us to become enemies."

"Neither do I. Being civil is possible. Friendship is something else."

He sat back.

I could see that he wanted a more reassuring answer, something that would allow him to imagine the end of our marriage without having to face the full extent of what had changed.

But I couldn't promise that the pain would disappear just because he wanted us to be comfortable around each other.

"I don't hate you, Daniel," I said. "But trust takes time to build, and you have given me reasons to question things I once believed without hesitation."

He looked down.

"I understand."

I hoped he did.

After our conversation, I carried the notes upstairs and placed them beside my notebook.

The two documents represented different parts of my life.

One held the questions I was still trying to answer emotionally.

The other held the practical things I needed to consider.

I wanted to keep them separate.

I didn't want my anger to make every practical decision for me, and I didn't want the need to settle practical matters to convince me that my hurt was unimportant.

The next morning, I made another pot of coffee.

Daniel came into the kitchen while I was putting away the grounds.

"Have you thought about where you want to go?"

I turned toward him.

"I've started considering my options."

"Does that mean you've decided to leave?"

"It means I'm considering what makes sense for me."

He sighed, but he didn't raise his voice.

"I really need to know."

"I understand that you want certainty. But I won't choose a place or make a commitment just because you want an answer today."

He leaned against the counter.

"How long do you need?"

"I can't give you an exact date yet."

He looked frustrated.

I waited for him to accuse me of making things difficult.

Instead, he said, "All right. Just keep me informed."

"I will."

It was not a dramatic change.

He had not suddenly become thoughtful or patient. I had not forgiven him, and he had not changed his mind about the marriage.

But we had managed to have a conversation without turning my need for time into a personal offense.

I took my coffee to the table and opened my laptop.

Before starting work, I glanced toward the cupboard where the champagne was stored.

I thought about taking it out.

Then I decided against it.

I didn't need to mark the end of our marriage with a bottle I had bought to celebrate the beginning of a different future.

There would be time for celebrations later, if and when I felt ready.

For now, I had work to finish and decisions to make.

I turned back to the screen.

I was moving forward, but I was doing it with my eyes open.

That mattered more to me than making Daniel believe everything was settled.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: The Day I Finally Answered Daniel’s Question About Leaving, I Understood That My Future Could Not Be Built Around Making Him Comfortable With His Choices

By the following week, I had stopped expecting every conversation with Daniel to end in an argument.
