I checked the payments I expected to receive and noted the bills that would come due during the next month.

The numbers were not comforting, exactly.

But they were familiar.

For three years, I had worked with numbers that frightened me more than these did. I had learned how to break a large problem into smaller pieces and deal with each one at a time.

I could use that skill for myself now.

Daniel came downstairs while I was reviewing a spreadsheet.

He poured coffee and glanced at the screen.

"What are you working on?"

"My finances."

He stopped stirring his cup.

"Why?"

I looked up.

"Because I need to plan for what happens next."

"You're acting as if we're already separated."

"We are discussing ending our marriage. I need to prepare for that possibility."

He sat down.

"I thought you needed more time."

"I did. I still do."

"Then why are you doing this now?"

"Because taking time to think doesn't mean I have to stop taking care of myself."

He looked at the spreadsheet.

"Are you worried about money?"

I almost laughed at the question.

Not because the situation was funny, but because money had been the center of our lives for so long that I couldn't understand how he could ask without seeing the connection.

"I am thinking about my future income and expenses."

"You've always managed money well."

"I know."

He looked at me as if he expected me to add something.

I didn't.

After a moment, he asked, "Are you going to keep bringing up the loan?"

I closed the spreadsheet.

"I will discuss it when it is relevant."

"I don't want us to keep fighting about what happened."

"Neither do I."

"Then we need to put it behind us."

I looked at him carefully.

"Putting something behind me doesn't mean pretending it never happened."

He sighed.

"I knew you were going to say that."

"Then you already know my answer."

He took a drink of coffee and stared at the table.

I wondered whether he understood that I wasn't trying to punish him.

I wanted to move forward too.

But I could not move forward by pretending that the past had no consequences. I had lost the apartment my parents left me. I had spent years taking on additional work. I had believed his promises, and now I had to rebuild my plans around a future he no longer wanted.

Those things mattered whether Daniel liked discussing them or not.

After breakfast, he left for work.

I continued reviewing my finances until I had a clear picture of my immediate responsibilities.

Then I put the papers away.

I didn't feel suddenly secure.

I felt more prepared than I had the day before.

That afternoon, I went into the bedroom and opened the drawer where I kept some of my personal belongings.

My mother's earrings were in their small box.

I picked them up and held them in my palm.

They were simple earrings, not especially valuable, but I had always treasured them because they had belonged to her.

When I sold the apartment, I had worried about losing a part of my parents' history. I had told myself that memories could travel with me, that the apartment was only a place, and that the important thing was the life Daniel and I were trying to protect.

I still believed that memories mattered more than walls.

But I understood now that the apartment had represented something beyond its price.

It had been a place I could call my own.

I returned the earrings to their box and closed the drawer.

I wasn't going to let the loss of that apartment convince me that I had lost every chance to build a life of my own.

The thought stayed with me through the afternoon.

When Daniel came home, I was sitting at the kitchen table with my notebook.

He stopped in the doorway.

"Have you decided anything?"

I looked up.

"Yes."

He seemed to brace himself.

"What?"

"I've decided I can't keep waiting for you to explain everything before I start making plans."

He pulled out a chair.

"Does that mean you're leaving?"

"It means I'm going to consider my options carefully and make decisions when I'm ready."

He looked frustrated again.

"I thought you were going to tell me what you wanted."

"I am telling you."

"No, you're telling me what you won't do."

I considered that.

"Maybe that's where I need to start."

He leaned back.

"I don't understand."

"I know you want a quick answer. You want me to agree that the marriage is over, decide where to go, and make this part of your life easier."

"That's not all I want."

"Then tell me what else you want."

He opened his mouth.

For a moment, I thought he might say that he wanted to help me, that he regretted the way he had treated me, or that he understood why I needed time.

Instead, he looked down at his hands.

"I just want things to be settled."

"I want that too."

I paused.

"But settled doesn't have to mean rushed."

He didn't respond.

I closed my notebook and stood.

"I'm going to finish my work."

He watched me leave the kitchen.

I didn't know whether he was angry or simply disappointed that I wasn't giving him the answer he wanted.

For once, I didn't feel responsible for finding out.

Upstairs, I sat at my desk and opened the next report.

The work was familiar, the figures clear, and the deadline real.

I began writing.

I didn't know exactly what my life would look like when the marriage ended. I didn't know how long the practical decisions would take or what Daniel would say when he realized I was no longer waiting for him to guide the process.

But I knew what I had been waiting for.

I had been waiting for him to recognize my sacrifice, to explain his choices, and to admit that I had deserved more honesty than he had given me.

Some of those things might never happen.

I could not make my next decision depend on his willingness to provide them.

I had paid the debt because I believed in our marriage.

That was my choice, made with the information I had at the time.

Now I had different information, and I had to make different choices.

I saved my report and checked the time.

Then I shut down the laptop.

For the first time since Daniel's confession, I did not feel as though every unanswered question was keeping me trapped in the same evening.

I could carry the questions with me without allowing them to decide everything.

And when I finally made my next move, it would not be because Daniel had told me I had reached the end of my time.

It would be because I had decided what I was ready to do.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: When Daniel Finally Asked What I Expected From Him, I Realized He Had Spent Weeks Asking What I Would Give Up Without Asking What He Had Already Taken Away

The next morning, I woke with a different kind of sadness.
