I continued with my consulting projects, answering emails and completing reports from the desk where I had spent so many late nights earning the money that helped clear his debt.

My work gave the days a structure.

It also reminded me that I had not stopped being capable simply because my marriage had broken apart.

Daniel seemed to expect that we would eventually reach a point when I would announce I had found somewhere else to stay.

I had not made that announcement.

I was still considering what I wanted and what practical steps I needed to take before making a decision.

One evening, he came home later than usual.

He placed his keys on the counter and stood in the kitchen while I finished an email.

"Have you made any progress?"

I saved my work before turning toward him.

"Progress on what?"

"Finding somewhere to go."

I closed the laptop.

"We've discussed this."

"And nothing has changed."

"Some things have changed."

He looked at me with frustration.

"Like what?"

"I've stopped expecting you to explain yourself without being asked."

He shook his head.

"That's not helpful."

"I wasn't trying to be helpful. You asked what had changed."

He pulled out a chair and sat down.

"I need to know what we're doing."

"So do I."

"Then let's stop going in circles."

I folded my hands on the table.

"All right. Tell me what you think should happen."

He seemed relieved that I had finally invited him to speak.

"I think we should separate. I think you should find a place to stay, and we should start figuring out the rest."

"You have already told me that."

"Because it's still what I want."

"I understand."

He waited for me to agree.

When I didn't, he leaned forward.

"What are you waiting for me to say?"

I looked at him carefully.

"Nothing. I'm waiting to decide what I want to do."

"How can you not know?"

"Because this wasn't a decision I expected to make this week."

"Neither was it for me."

I let that statement sit between us.

He had known about Sophia for almost a year. Even if he claimed he hadn't known exactly when he would leave, he had been living with information I didn't have.

He had time to think about his choices.

I had been given a confession and a demand.

Those were not the same circumstances.

"You've had time to get used to the idea," I said. "I haven't."

He looked away.

"I didn't plan for it to happen like this."

"How did you plan for it to happen?"

"I don't know."

"Did you imagine telling me before I paid the loan?"

He rubbed his hands together.

"I knew the debt had to be dealt with."

"That's not what I asked."

He looked at me.

"I didn't want the business hanging over everything."

"And you didn't want our marriage hanging over your decision either?"

"That's not fair."

I recognized the phrase now.

Whenever I asked a question he couldn't answer comfortably, he called it unfair.

I had once taken that response as a sign that I had pushed too hard. I would soften my words, explain that I wasn't accusing him, and reassure him that I wanted us to solve the problem together.

This time, I didn't soften anything.

"Daniel, you told me we were a team. You let me believe we were working toward a future together. You accepted my help, including the money from my parents' apartment. Then, as soon as the debt was paid, you told me you wanted me gone."

"I never said I was waiting for the debt to be paid."

"You didn't have to say it. That is how it happened."

He pushed his chair back slightly.

"I can't undo the timing."

"No. But you can stop pretending that the timing doesn't matter."

He stared at me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he said, "What do you want me to do? Stay with you when I don't want to?"

"No."

"Then I don't understand why we're still having this conversation."

"Because you keep treating my refusal to leave immediately as if it means I'm asking you to stay."

He looked down at the table.

I continued before he could turn the conversation back toward his own discomfort.

"I am not asking you to love me. I am not asking you to give up Sophia. I am not asking you to pretend our marriage can go back to what it was."

His expression hardened when I said her name.

"But I am asking you to recognize that your decision affects more than you. I have work, possessions, financial questions, and a life to think about. I won't make every decision in one evening just because you are ready to move on."

He was quiet for a long time.

Then he said, "So you're going to stay here indefinitely?"

"I didn't say that."

"Then give me a date."

"I can't give you a date just to make you feel better."

He stood up.

"This is exactly what I was afraid of."

"What were you afraid of?"

"That you would make this impossible."

I felt a familiar sadness rise in my chest.

Not because his accusation was true, but because I could hear how determined he was to see himself as the person trapped by the situation.

"You made a decision about our marriage," I said. "You were allowed to make it. I am allowed to take time to decide what happens in my life afterward."

He looked toward the hallway.

"I can't keep living like this."

"Neither can I."

He turned back to me.

"Then what are you going to do?"

I took a breath.

"I am going to stop treating your wishes as instructions."

He didn't move.

I had never spoken to him that way before. Not because I had lacked opinions, but because I had always believed that marriage required compromise and that difficult situations were best handled by finding a solution both people could live with.

I still believed in compromise.

I simply no longer believed compromise meant one person had to accept every demand made by the other.

Daniel picked up his keys again.

"Fine. Think about it."

"I am."

He walked toward the front door, then paused.

"Don't expect me to change my mind."

I looked at him.

"I haven't asked you to."

He left.

The sound of the door closing traveled through the house, but this time I didn't feel compelled to follow him or call after him.

I returned to the table and opened my notebook.

Under the questions I had written earlier, I added one more.

What am I willing to decide, and what am I refusing to decide under pressure?

I didn't have a complete answer.

But I knew one thing with certainty.

I would not measure my progress by how quickly Daniel became comfortable with the consequences of his own decision.

I would measure it by whether I could look at the choices ahead of me and know I had made them for myself.

I closed the notebook and placed it beside the folder containing the loan records.

For the first time since the confession, the next step did not have to be a response to something Daniel wanted.

It could be a decision that began with me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: I Stopped Waiting for Daniel to Admit How Much I Had Sacrificed, and Started Looking Honestly at the Life I Still Had

By the end of that week, the house had settled into an uneasy routine.
