How are you holding up?"

The question sounded polite.

I wondered whether he genuinely wanted to know or whether he was simply preparing to say something else.

"I'm taking things one day at a time."

"That's probably wise."

He paused.

"Your mother-in-law and I have been discussing what happened."

I waited.

"We think everyone needs to be reasonable about this."

There it was.

Not an apology. Not an acknowledgment of what Daniel had done. A request for reasonableness from the person who had been told to leave her home.

"What does reasonable mean to you?"

"It means accepting that Daniel has made a decision."

"I understand his decision."

"Then perhaps you should consider moving on."

I looked out the kitchen window at the narrow strip of garden beside the house.

I had planted those flowers two summers earlier, when Daniel had promised that once the business recovered, we would finally have time to enjoy our home.

"What would you have said if Daniel had paid off a debt for me, then discovered I had been seeing another man for nearly a year and told him to leave?"

Richard was silent.

"That's not the same situation."

"Why not?"

"You're asking me to imagine something that hasn't happened."

"No. I'm asking you to imagine the same situation with the names changed."

He exhaled.

"Daniel has been under tremendous pressure."

"So have I."

"His business was in serious trouble."

"I know. I helped him save it."

"We all appreciate what you did."

I closed my eyes for a moment.

"Do you?"

"Of course."

"Then why was I sitting in my own living room last night while your family discussed where I should go, as if I were a visitor who had overstayed her welcome?"

He didn't answer.

I could hear a television in the background on his end of the call. Someone was speaking, but the words were too muffled to understand.

"Your mother-in-law didn't mean to hurt you," he said at last.

"She supported Daniel when he told me he was leaving me for Sophia."

"She wants her son to be happy."

"And what do you want?"

Another pause.

"I want this situation to be handled without more pain."

I looked down at my notebook.

"That is not the same as wanting it to be fair."

"I don't think anyone is trying to be unfair to you."

"Then perhaps you should ask yourselves why the only solution anyone has suggested is for me to leave."

He started to speak, but I continued.

"I am not asking you to force Daniel to stay married to me. I am not asking you to choose me over your son. I am asking you to stop acting as though his decision automatically determines every decision I am allowed to make."

"I'll speak to Margaret."

"You don't have to speak to her for my sake. I simply want you to understand that I won't be rushed."

He said he understood.

I wasn't sure he did, but I ended the call without arguing further.

About an hour later, Margaret called.

Her voice was softer than Richard's, although the message was much the same.

"Daniel is very upset about all of this."

I stood at the kitchen counter, sorting through a small pile of unopened mail.

"I'm upset too."

"Of course you are. But sometimes marriages reach a point where people have to accept that things are over."

"Sometimes they do."

"I don't want you to think we don't care about you."

I put the envelopes down.

"Then I wish you had shown some of that care last night."

She sighed.

"We were all caught off guard."

"Daniel told me he had been with Sophia for almost a year. I was the only person in that room who was being told something new."

"That's not what I meant."

"What did you mean?"

She hesitated.

I could picture her sitting in her living room, holding her phone, choosing each word as carefully as she had chosen her seat the night before.

"We just don't want this to turn into something ugly."

"Neither do I."

"Then perhaps you could give Daniel some space."

"I have given him space for years. I gave him time to rebuild his business. I gave him money I earned by working extra hours. I gave up the apartment my parents left me."

My voice remained quiet.

"What I cannot give him is the right to decide that all of those things no longer matter because he has found someone else."

Margaret made a small sound.

"I don't think he believes they don't matter."

"Then why is he treating me as if they don't?"

She didn't answer.

I had expected another defense of her son, but her silence felt different this time.

Perhaps she had no explanation.

Perhaps she simply didn't want to say it aloud.

After a while, she told me she hoped we could handle the separation peacefully.

I said I hoped so too.

When the call ended, I put my phone on the table.

I didn't feel victorious.

There was no satisfaction in making my in-laws uncomfortable. I had once thought of them as family, and I had wanted them to see me that way even when things became difficult.

But I was beginning to understand that wanting people to recognize my worth could not make them do it.

I had spent years proving I was dependable.

I had shown up when Daniel needed help, taken on more work when the bills became frightening, and tried to keep our home steady when he felt overwhelmed.

I had believed those actions would speak for themselves.

Now I saw that some people were willing to appreciate a sacrifice only while it benefited them.

Once the sacrifice was complete, they preferred not to discuss what it had cost.

That evening, Daniel came home and told me his parents had called him.

"They're worried about how this is going," he said.

I was folding a towel in the laundry room.

"So am I."

"Did you tell them I was forcing you out?"

I looked at him.

"Did you tell them you had announced our marriage was over while Sophia sat beside you?"

He lowered his eyes.

"I don't want to argue."

"Then don't ask me questions you don't want answered."

He leaned against the doorframe.

"They think we should be able to handle this like adults."

"We should."

"Then maybe we can agree on some basic things."

I set the folded towel on the shelf.

"We can talk about practical things when we're ready to discuss them properly."

"When will that be?"

"When we can have a conversation without treating my immediate departure as the starting point."

He looked frustrated, but he didn't repeat the demand.

For the first time since the confession, he walked away without telling me where I should go.

It was a small change.

It didn't repair anything, but it reminded me that I did not have to answer every demand simply because it had been made.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: When I Finally Looked at the Paid Loan Confirmation Again, I Realized the Debt Was Gone but the Promises That Had Driven Me Were Still Unsettled

Richard called shortly after lunch.
