I'm just not doing it on your schedule."

He placed his keys on the table.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he walked into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator.

He stood there for several seconds before taking out a bottle of water.

I watched him return to the living room.

It was strange how ordinary he looked.

He was wearing the same kind of shirt he wore to work.

His hair was slightly untidy.

He looked like the man who had left the house that morning, not someone who had turned my life upside down.

He sat across from me.

"I've been thinking about everything."

I waited.

"I know yesterday was difficult."

I looked at him.

"Difficult?"

He nodded.

"I know I could have handled it better."

The words were careful.

They sounded like the beginning of an apology, but he stopped before reaching one.

I did not help him finish.

He took a drink of water.

"I don't want us to hate each other."

I felt tired.

"Then you should have thought about that before you brought Sophia into our living room and told me to leave."

His face tightened.

"I wasn't trying to humiliate you."

"Maybe you weren't. But you did."

He looked down at the bottle in his hands.

I waited for him to say something else.

Instead, he began talking about how long he had felt unhappy.

He said we had grown apart.

He said the business had put too much pressure on our relationship.

He said he had not known how to tell me that his feelings had changed.

I listened.

Some of what he said may have been true.

A marriage could become strained.

People could change.

Two people could reach a point where they no longer wanted the same things.

I was willing to accept those possibilities.

But none of them explained why he had hidden an affair while allowing me to believe that paying off the debt would give us a fresh start.

When he finished, I asked him one question.

"Why did you keep telling me that everything would be better after the loan was paid?"

He stared at the bottle.

"I wanted the debt gone."

"I know."

"I thought it would make things easier."

"For the business?"

He nodded.

I waited.

"And for you?" I asked.

He did not answer.

I leaned back.

That was when I understood that we had been using the same words to describe two completely different futures.

When Daniel said that things would be better after the loan was gone, he meant that his business would have fewer financial problems.

When I heard those words, I imagined our marriage becoming stronger.

I imagined having time together again.

I imagined the two of us finally enjoying the life we had spent years trying to protect.

He had allowed me to believe that we wanted the same thing.

Maybe he had once believed it himself.

I could not know.

But by the time I made the final payment, he had already built another relationship.

I looked at him.

"You knew how much that goal meant to me."

He nodded faintly.

"I did."

"And you knew what I gave up to reach it."

He remained silent.

I thought about the apartment again.

I thought about how I had stood in the empty living room after signing the papers, looking at the bare walls and telling myself that I was doing something important for our future.

I had not regretted selling it at the time.

I had believed I was making a difficult but necessary choice.

Now the memory hurt in a different way.

I did not blame Daniel for every decision I had made.

I had chosen to help him.

But I had made those choices based on what I believed he was telling me.

That mattered.

I stood up and walked toward the kitchen.

Daniel followed me with his eyes.

I opened the cupboard and took out a glass.

Then I filled it with water.

The champagne bottle sat on the shelf above the cups.

I looked at it for a moment.

Daniel noticed.

"Are you still thinking about that?"

I turned toward him.

"About what?"

"The champagne."

I looked at the bottle.

"I bought it because I thought we had something to celebrate."

He said nothing.

I placed the glass on the counter.

"I don't think you understand what yesterday felt like for me."

He rubbed his forehead.

"I know I hurt you."

"Do you?"

He looked up.

I continued.

"I spent three years trying to solve a problem that was threatening our future. I thought we were doing it together. Then, the day the problem was finally gone, you told me that the future I had been working toward no longer included me."

He lowered his eyes.

For a moment, I felt the urge to soften my words.

I wanted to tell him that I knew he had been under pressure.

I wanted to remind him that I understood how difficult the business had been.

Those things were true.

But I had spent too long making room for his feelings while ignoring my own.

I let the silence remain.

Eventually, Daniel spoke.

"What do you want me to do?"

I considered the question.

I did not want him to make promises he could not keep.

I did not want him to say he loved me simply because he disliked seeing me hurt.

I did not want to beg him to return to a marriage he had already decided to leave.

I wanted honesty.

I wanted enough time to think.

And I wanted him to stop treating my cooperation as something he was entitled to receive.

"I want you to stop asking me to make everything easy for you."

He stared at me.

"I'm not asking you to do that."

"You keep asking me to leave. You keep asking me to decide quickly. You keep telling me that we need to settle everything because you want to move forward."

I paused.

"You haven't once asked what I need."

He looked away.

That silence told me more than another argument would have.

I returned to the living room and sat down.

Daniel remained in the kitchen for a while.

I heard him put the glass in the sink.

Then he came back and stood near the doorway.

"I don't know what else to say."

I nodded.

"Then don't say anything for a while."

He looked at me as if he wanted to argue.

Instead, he sat down.

We stayed in the same room without speaking.

It was not comfortable.

But it was honest in a way our conversations had not been for a long time.

I did not know whether Daniel would ever understand what his actions had cost me.

I did not know whether I would eventually look back on our marriage with sadness, anger, or some mixture of both.

I did not know where I would live or what I would do next.

But I had stopped asking myself how I could persuade him to care.

That question had consumed too much of my life already.

I had spent three years trying to prove that I was a good partner.

I had believed that if I worked hard enough, gave enough, and stayed patient enough, our marriage would reward me with security.

Now I understood that no amount of sacrifice could guarantee another person's loyalty.

I could love someone deeply and still be wrong about who they were becoming.

I could give everything I had and still be left with a life I needed to rebuild.

That did not make the love meaningless.

It meant the love had not been enough.

I looked at Daniel.

He was staring at the floor.

For a moment, I remembered the man who had sat beside me when we first learned how serious the debt had become.

He had looked frightened then.

He had told me that he did not know how he would save the company.

I had taken his hand and promised that we would find a way.

We had found a way to pay the loan.

But somewhere along the way, I had mistaken solving his financial problem for saving our marriage.

Those were never the same task.

I stood up and walked toward the hallway.

Daniel looked up.

"Where are you going?"

"To get ready for bed."

He nodded.

I paused at the doorway.

"Daniel?"

He looked at me.

"I'm not going to make any promises tonight."

He seemed to understand that I meant more than the question of whether I would leave the house.

I was not promising to forgive him.

I was not promising to stay.

I was not promising to make his decision easier.

I was giving myself permission to think.

He looked down again.

"All right."

I went upstairs.

The bedroom was quiet.

I placed my phone on the dresser and opened the jewelry box one more time.

My mother's earrings were still inside.

I touched them briefly, then closed the lid.

I did not know what the next few weeks would bring.

I did not know whether Daniel would become more reasonable or more impatient.

I did not know whether the people who had supported him would ever consider what had happened from my side.

But I knew one thing.

I had already given up an apartment, three years of extra work, and more of my peace than I could measure.

I would not give up my ability to think clearly just because my husband wanted the story to end on his terms.

I turned off the light.

For the first time since he confessed, I did not lie awake trying to imagine what I could say to make him understand.

I let the unanswered questions remain unanswered.

Tomorrow would come soon enough.

And when it did, I would face it one decision at a time.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The First Time I Asked Daniel for an Honest Answer, He Realized I Was No Longer Trying to Make His Betrayal Easier for Him

Daniel came home later than I expected.
