But we can't leave everything undecided."

"I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet."

He shook his head.

"You're making this harder than it has to be."

I looked at him.

"Do you hear yourself when you say that?"

He frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you keep asking me to make your life easier before you've even acknowledged how much you've changed mine."

He looked away.

I took my coffee and sat opposite him.

"I know you want the marriage to end. I heard you yesterday. I'm not asking you to change your mind."

He nodded.

"Good."

The speed of his answer hurt.

I continued anyway.

"But I need time to think about what happens next. I won't make a decision about my living arrangements just because you're uncomfortable waiting."

Daniel tapped one finger against his cup.

"How much time?"

"I don't know."

"A few days?"

"Maybe."

He exhaled.

I could see that he wanted a specific answer.

I had always been the person who organized things.

I kept track of deadlines, appointments, payments, and the details Daniel forgot when work became overwhelming.

He had relied on that part of me for years.

Now he wanted me to organize the end of our marriage with the same efficiency.

But this was not a consulting project.

There was no deadline that would make the pain disappear.

I took another sip of coffee.

Daniel glanced toward the living room.

The champagne bottle was still on the table.

Neither of us had touched it.

He looked at it for a moment.

Then he turned back to me.

"Maybe you should stay with a friend for a few nights."

I put down my cup.

"Why?"

"So we can both think."

"You can think here."

He rubbed his forehead.

"I don't want this to become a fight."

"Then stop treating my presence as the problem."

He looked at me.

For a moment, I thought he might argue.

Instead, he sat back.

I could see him trying to decide whether it was worth continuing.

That was how many of our disagreements had ended in the past.

He would grow quiet.

I would assume that meant the conversation was over.

Then I would find a way to smooth things over because the silence made me uncomfortable.

This time, I let the silence remain.

After a while, Daniel stood and rinsed his cup.

"I'm going to the office."

I nodded.

He paused near the kitchen doorway.

"We'll talk later."

"All right."

He waited for me to say something else.

I did not.

When the front door closed, I remained at the table.

I listened to his footsteps fade outside.

Then I looked toward the living room.

The champagne bottle caught the morning light.

I walked over and picked it up.

For a moment, I considered opening it alone.

I had worked hard enough to deserve a celebration.

But the thought made me feel worse.

The bottle had been bought for a future I had imagined with Daniel.

I did not want to pretend that future still existed.

I carried it into the kitchen and placed it in a cupboard.

I did not throw it away.

I simply did not want to look at it.

Then I sat down with my phone.

I opened the bank confirmation again.

The final payment had cleared.

The loan was paid in full.

I read the message slowly, letting the fact settle.

Whatever happened to my marriage, I had completed the task I had promised myself I would finish.

I had done the work.

I had made the sacrifices.

I had reached the goal.

The fact that Daniel had chosen to betray me did not change any of that.

I closed the message.

For the first time, I thought about the apartment without thinking about what it had bought us.

I remembered its narrow hallway.

I remembered the sunlight that came through the living room window in the afternoon.

I remembered my mother placing a bowl of fruit on the counter and telling me that a small home could still be a good home.

I had sold it because I believed I was protecting our future.

Now I wondered whether I had been too quick to give up something that belonged to me.

I could not change that decision.

But I could learn from it.

I could stop measuring my worth by how much I was willing to sacrifice.

I could stop assuming that love meant being the person who always gave more.

I could stop waiting for Daniel to tell me that my contributions mattered.

They mattered because they had been real.

I did not need his permission to believe that.

I spent the rest of the morning doing small things.

I washed the dishes.

I folded the laundry.

I put away the grocery list that had been sitting beneath the refrigerator magnet.

The ordinary tasks helped me feel that at least some part of my life remained within my control.

Around midday, I sat at the kitchen table again.

I did not know what Daniel would say when he returned.

I did not know whether he expected me to have packed my belongings.

I did not know how he planned to handle the house.

I was not going to invent answers to questions I had not yet asked.

All I knew was that I needed to keep my head clear.

I took out a notebook and wrote down the things I needed to understand before making any major decision.

I did not write a long list.

I wrote three simple questions.

What did I know?

What did I need to know?

What could wait?

The first question was easy.

Daniel had confessed to an affair.

He wanted to end the marriage.

He had told me to leave the house.

His parents had supported him.

The debt was paid.

Those were facts.

The second question was harder.

I needed to understand the practical situation before agreeing to anything.

I needed time to consider my options.

I needed to stop allowing Daniel's urgency to become my urgency.

The third question was the most important.

What could wait?

Almost everything.

I did not need to decide the rest of my life before dinner.

I did not need to give Daniel an answer simply because he wanted one.

I did not need to turn my heartbreak into a neat arrangement that made everyone else comfortable.

I closed the notebook.

For a moment, I sat quietly with my hands resting on the table.

I still loved parts of the life I had shared with Daniel.

I missed the man I thought he was.

I missed the easy conversations, the familiar routines, and the future I had expected us to reach together.

That was the hardest thing to admit.

I could be angry with him and still miss him.

I could recognize that he had betrayed me and still remember the times he had made me happy.

Both things could be true.

I did not need to erase the good memories to understand the damage he had caused.

I only needed to stop letting those memories make decisions for me.

That afternoon, I returned the notebook to the drawer.

The house was quiet.

The champagne remained unopened in the cupboard.

And for the first time since the previous evening, I felt that I could breathe without waiting for Daniel to tell me what I was allowed to do.

<a
