I'm asking about the house."

He shook his head.

"You're deliberately separating things that belong together."

"No, Daniel. You're treating them as if they're the same thing."

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

I had never been particularly good at arguing with him.

When we disagreed, I usually tried to find a compromise before the disagreement became a fight.

That habit had served us well in some situations.

In others, it had taught Daniel that he could keep pushing until I was the one who gave something up.

I had finally begun to recognize the difference.

He pointed toward the hallway.

"You can take your things and stay somewhere else while we work everything out."

I looked at him.

"Somewhere else?"

"With a friend. A relative. Wherever you want."

I almost asked him whether he had considered where he would have gone if the situation were reversed.

But I knew the answer would not help me.

Instead, I asked another question.

"Have you already decided what happens to everything in this house?"

Daniel hesitated.

Richard answered before he could.

"This isn't the time to get into every detail."

I turned toward him.

"Then when is the right time?"

He looked uncomfortable.

"When everyone has calmed down."

I nodded.

That was convenient.

Everyone wanted me to calm down, even though I had been the last person to learn that my marriage was in trouble.

Everyone wanted to postpone the difficult questions until I was less likely to ask them.

I was beginning to understand how easily a person could be made to feel unreasonable simply by refusing to follow everyone else's preferred schedule.

I walked toward the table and picked up my phone.

The bank confirmation was still open on the screen.

I had read it so many times that morning that I could almost remember every word.

The loan balance was zero.

I looked at the message for a moment before turning the screen off.

Daniel noticed.

"Why do you keep looking at that?"

"Because it's important to me."

"The money is gone. There's no point discussing it over and over."

I looked up.

"The money is gone because I paid it."

He rubbed his forehead.

"I know."

"Then stop speaking as if it happened by itself."

His parents exchanged a glance.

Sophia looked down at her hands.

Daniel's expression became defensive.

"I never forced you to sell your apartment."

The sentence struck me harder than I expected.

Not because it was entirely untrue.

He had not physically forced me to do anything.

I had made my own decision to help him.

But he had spent months telling me that the business would fail if we did not act quickly.

He had told me that the loan threatened everything we had built.

He had promised that once the debt was gone, we would finally have room to live.

I had believed those promises.

I had made sacrifices because I thought we shared the same goal.

Now he was using my willingness to help him as proof that he owed me nothing.

I swallowed the bitterness rising in my throat.

"You're right. You didn't force me."

He seemed surprised by my agreement.

I continued.

"But you asked me to help you save something you said we were building together."

He looked away.

"And I believed you."

The silence that followed was different from the earlier ones.

For a moment, I thought he might finally acknowledge what I meant.

Then he said, "I can't change how I feel now."

I nodded.

"No, you can't."

That was the truth.

I could not make him love me.

I could not force him to remain faithful.

I could not turn back the clock and make the previous year happen differently.

But I could refuse to let his feelings erase the choices I still had to make.

I walked to the kitchen and returned with my glass of water.

The water had warmed slightly.

I drank it anyway.

Margaret approached me.

"Listen, I know this is painful."

I looked at her.

For a brief moment, I wanted to believe she meant it.

She had been part of my life for years.

I had sat at her dining table during holidays.

I had listened to her talk about Daniel's childhood.

I had helped her choose gifts for family occasions.

There had been ordinary moments when I had felt that she cared about me.

Perhaps she had cared about me once.

But whatever affection she had felt was not enough to make her question her son now.

She lowered her voice.

"Sometimes marriages end. You can't hold on to someone who doesn't want to stay."

I nodded slowly.

"I agree."

She looked relieved.

I continued.

"But I'm not holding on to him. I'm asking why everyone thinks I should leave tonight without even discussing the consequences."

Her relief disappeared.

She glanced at Daniel.

He stepped forward.

"We'll deal with the details later."

"Why later?"

"Because this is already difficult."

I looked around the room.

"You keep saying that as if the difficulty began when I asked questions."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

Sophia shifted on the couch.

I could tell she wanted the conversation to end.

I could not blame her for wanting an uncomfortable evening to be over.

But I could not pretend that her comfort mattered more than my own.

I sat down again.

"I need some time."

Daniel shook his head.

"Time for what?"

"To think clearly."

"You've had enough time to understand what's happening."

I looked at him.

"I found out about your affair less than an hour ago."

He fell silent.

I had not intended the sentence to sound cruel.

It was simply true.

For him, this conversation might have been the end of a long period of uncertainty.

For me, it was the beginning of one.

He had known Sophia for almost a year.

He had spent months making choices I knew nothing about.

He had arrived at this evening with his decision already made.

I was still trying to understand the man standing in front of me.

I took my handbag off my shoulder and placed it beside the chair.

Daniel stared at it.

"You're staying?"

"I'm sitting down."

"That's not what I asked."

I looked at him.

"And I haven't answered because I don't know what I want to do yet."

He seemed unable to understand that answer.

For years, I had made quick decisions whenever his business needed something.

I had found money.

I had rearranged my schedule.

I had accepted additional work.

I had turned complicated problems into manageable tasks because I thought that was what a good partner did.

Now he wanted the same efficiency from me while telling me that the life we had shared was over.

I could not do it.

Not tonight.

I rose and walked toward the staircase.

Daniel followed me for a few steps.

"Where are you going?"

"Upstairs."

"Why?"

I turned around.

"Because I need a few minutes without an audience."

He stopped.

I went upstairs without waiting for his permission.

The bedroom door was open.

Our bed was neatly made, and the curtains were still drawn.

On my side of the dresser sat the small jewelry box I had owned for years.

Daniel's watch lay beside his wallet.

Nothing looked disturbed.

I stood in the doorway and listened.

Downstairs, I could hear voices, but I could not make out the words.

I walked to the dresser and touched the jewelry box.

There were not many things inside.

A pair of earrings my mother had given me.

A bracelet from an anniversary.

A necklace I rarely wore because I was always afraid of losing it.

I closed the lid.

For the first time since entering the house, I let myself feel the full weight of what had happened.

My marriage was not what I had believed it to be.

The realization hurt more than I could explain.

I sat on the edge of the bed and pressed my hands together.

I wanted to cry.

I wanted to call someone who would tell me that none of this made sense.

But I did not want to make a decision while I was still struggling to breathe normally.

So I stayed there until my hands stopped shaking.

Then I stood up.

I did not pack a suitcase.

I did not begin removing my belongings from the dresser.

I simply looked around the room and reminded myself that I did not have to solve every problem in one evening.

When I returned downstairs, Daniel was standing near the front door.

Sophia was still on the couch.

Richard and Margaret were preparing to leave.

They looked at me as I entered the room.

Daniel spoke first.

"Are you ready to be reasonable?"

I stopped beside the table.

I looked at the unopened champagne.

Then I looked at my husband.

"I am being reasonable."

He shook his head.

"Then tell me what happens next."

I took a slow breath.

"Not tonight."

His expression hardened.

I could see that he disliked the answer.

But for the first time in three years, I did not feel responsible for making his discomfort disappear.

I had paid the debt.

I had kept my promises.

Now I needed to decide what I would do with the life that remained.

And I was going to take the time to do it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Woman Beside My Husband Expected Me to Disappear Quietly, but the First Thing I
