I gave up weekends because your company needed the money. I sold the apartment my parents left me because we agreed that clearing the loan was our priority."

Daniel's face tightened.

"You didn't have to do all that."

I stared at him.

For three years, he had told me we had no other choice.

Now that the debt was gone, he was pretending my sacrifices had been voluntary decisions that had nothing to do with him.

I felt something inside me go cold.

"You're right," I said. "I didn't have to."

He looked almost relieved.

Then I continued.

"I chose to because I believed you were building a future with me."

His expression changed.

I had not raised my voice.

I had not called him names.

I had simply described the reason I had done what I had done.

Somehow, that seemed to bother him more than an argument would have.

Richard moved away from the window.

"Nobody is denying that you've helped Daniel."

I turned toward him.

"Then why am I being treated like a stranger who has overstayed her welcome?"

He had no answer.

Margaret stepped forward.

"We're not trying to insult you."

I looked at her.

"You invited me into a conversation where my husband announced an affair and told me to leave. You both sat here and supported him. What would you call that?"

Her face flushed.

"I think you're being unfair."

"To whom?"

She looked away.

For years, I had tried to make myself easy to accept.

I had been patient when Daniel was stressed.

I had been generous when his parents needed help.

I had avoided difficult conversations because I did not want to add to anyone's problems.

I thought being considerate would make people considerate in return.

That was not how it worked.

Sometimes, people simply became accustomed to what you were willing to give.

Then, when you finally asked them to consider your feelings, they treated the request as an inconvenience.

Sophia shifted beside Daniel.

"I don't think this is helping anyone."

I looked at her.

"You're probably right."

She seemed startled by my answer.

I continued.

"But I didn't arrange this conversation. I came home expecting to celebrate the end of a financial crisis. Your presence here was a surprise."

Sophia's cheeks reddened.

Daniel immediately stepped in.

"Don't blame her for my decision."

"I haven't blamed her for your decision."

I held his gaze.

"You made that decision. You told me so yourself."

He looked frustrated.

I could almost see him trying to find a way to make me responsible for the scene.

Perhaps he wanted me to become unreasonable.

Perhaps he expected anger to give him a reason to dismiss everything I said.

I could not know what he was thinking.

I only knew that I would not help him rewrite what had happened.

I picked up my phone again.

Daniel watched me closely.

"Who are you calling now?"

"I'm not calling anyone."

"Then why do you keep picking it up?"

I looked down at the screen.

Because I wanted to remember that I had a life beyond this room.

Because I needed something familiar to hold while my marriage collapsed in front of me.

Because the phone contained the bank's confirmation that the loan was paid, and I needed to remind myself that one important thing had been completed exactly as I had intended.

I set it down.

"Daniel, I need you to answer one question honestly."

He sighed.

"Fine."

"Did you plan to tell me about Sophia before the loan was paid off?"

He hesitated.

It was brief, but I saw it.

His eyes moved toward his mother.

Then toward Sophia.

Then back to me.

"I don't see why that matters."

"It matters to me."

He rubbed his jaw.

"The situation was complicated."

I waited.

He looked irritated by my silence.

"We were having problems. I didn't know how to handle everything at once."

I thought about the last year.

I remembered how often I had asked whether he was worried about the business.

I remembered him assuring me that we were making progress.

I remembered the way he thanked me whenever I transferred money toward the debt.

I had taken those moments as evidence that we were still partners.

Now they looked different.

"Did you know you wanted to leave me before I made the final payment?"

Daniel's expression hardened.

"I don't know exactly when I made that decision."

That was not an answer.

But it was the closest thing to one he was willing to give.

I nodded slowly.

"All right."

He seemed annoyed that I had not argued.

"You're acting as though I deliberately used you."

I looked at him for a long moment.

I wanted to tell him that I had no idea whether every part of this had been planned.

I could not see inside his mind.

I could not prove what he had intended when he asked me to help with the debt.

But I knew what had happened.

He had accepted my help.

He had allowed me to believe that our marriage was moving toward a better future.

And on the day the final payment cleared, he introduced the woman he had been seeing and told me to leave.

I did not need to know every thought he had entertained to understand the result.

"I'm acting like someone who has just learned that the future she believed in was not the future her husband wanted."

Nobody spoke.

For a few seconds, the room seemed smaller.

Then Richard cleared his throat.

"Perhaps we should all take a break."

Daniel nodded quickly.

"That's probably best."

Margaret looked at me.

"You should go somewhere tonight. Give yourself time to think."

I almost admired how easily she returned to the same suggestion.

She had heard everything I said.

She had watched her son avoid my questions.

And she still believed the simplest solution was to send me away.

I stood up.

Margaret seemed to think she had finally persuaded me.

"Thank you," she said, her voice softer now.

I looked at her.

"Please don't thank me yet."

Her expression stiffened.

I walked toward the kitchen again.

This time, I did not need water.

I wanted to see the room where I had spent so many evenings trying to make our lives work.

The counter still held the small basket where I kept the mail.

A grocery list was tucked beneath a magnet on the refrigerator.

There were two coffee mugs beside the sink.

One belonged to me.

The other belonged to Daniel.

I had bought them together years ago because I liked the simple blue pattern.

I stood there and looked at them.

Nothing in the kitchen had changed.

That was the strange part.

The same counters.

The same refrigerator.

The same table where we had once discussed our plans.

But the life I had attached to those objects no longer felt real.

I touched the edge of the counter and closed my eyes for a moment.

I was not ready to decide what my marriage meant now.

I was not ready to decide what I would do about the house.

I was not even ready to decide whether I wanted to hear Daniel explain himself again.

But I knew I would not make a major decision simply because three people expected me to make their evening easier.

I returned to the living room.

Daniel had taken Sophia's hand.

The gesture might have been meant to reassure her.

It might have been meant to show me that his decision was final.

Either way, it told me that he was more concerned with establishing his new relationship than with acknowledging the damage he had caused.

I stopped beside the table.

The champagne bottle stood where I had left it.

I picked it up and held it by the neck.

Daniel watched me.

"Are you finally ready to go?"

I looked at him.

"No."

He stared at me.

"What do you mean, no?"

"I mean I'm not leaving just because you've decided that you want me gone."

His face reddened.

"You're making this difficult."

I gave a small, tired laugh.

"Daniel, you have no idea how difficult the last three years have been."

He opened his mouth.

I raised one hand.

"Let me finish."

He stopped.

"I am not going to beg you to stay married to me. I am not going to ask you to stop seeing Sophia. You have made your choice, and I heard you."

I placed the champagne back on the table.

"But you don't get to announce that choice and expect me to disappear before I have even had time to understand what you're asking of me."

Richard folded his arms.

Margaret looked at Daniel.

Sophia sat very still.

I could feel the old fear trying to return.

The fear of upsetting everyone.

The fear of being called unreasonable.

The fear that if I refused to cooperate, they would all decide I was the problem.

Then I remembered the apartment.

I remembered signing the papers to sell it.

I remembered how I had sat in my car afterward, holding the documents and telling myself that I was doing the right thing.

I had made that sacrifice because I believed in us.

I could not undo it.

But I could stop making new sacrifices simply because Daniel expected me to.

He looked at me with a mixture of anger and disbelief.

"So what exactly are you going to do?"

I met his eyes.

"For tonight, I'm going to think."

He gave a dismissive shake of his head.

"That doesn't solve anything."

"No. But it means I'm making my own decision instead of letting you make it for me."

He turned toward his parents.

Neither offered him the answer he wanted.

I picked up my handbag.

Then I looked at Sophia.

She seemed much less comfortable than she had when I first walked through the door.

I did not feel triumphant.

There was nothing satisfying about standing in a room with the woman your husband had chosen over you.

There was nothing pleasant about watching his parents defend him while he tried to push you out of your own life.

I simply felt finished with pretending that their confidence meant I had no power.

I looked at Daniel one last time.

"Have you forgotten something?"

He frowned.

"What now?"

I held his gaze.

"The debt you wanted gone is gone. But you seem to have forgotten who stood beside you while it was still there."

He did not answer.

For once, I did not wait for him to.

I turned toward the hallway, not to pack my bags, but to collect my thoughts away from the people who had decided that my marriage was over and that I should accept their decision without question.

Behind me, I heard Daniel say my name.

I stopped.

For a moment, I thought he might finally apologize.

Instead, he said, "We need to settle this tonight."

I turned back toward him.

And I understood that he still believed the most important thing in the room was his timetable.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: He Wanted Everything Settled Before Nightfall, but I Had Spent Three Years Carrying His Problems and Would Not Rush This Decision

Daniel looked at me without blinking.
