I'm not sure how to leave her out of it."

Richard shifted in his chair.

"There's no need to speak to her like that."

I turned toward my father-in-law.

For years, I had tried to maintain a good relationship with Richard and Margaret.

I remembered birthdays, sent messages on holidays, and visited them even when work left me exhausted.

When Daniel's business began struggling, I never complained about the time he spent helping his parents with errands or household expenses.

I treated them as family.

I thought they treated me the same way.

Now Richard was defending Sophia.

I wondered how many conversations had taken place without me.

Margaret finally spoke.

"Daniel deserves to be happy."

I looked at her.

"I agree."

She seemed surprised.

I continued before she could respond.

"But I don't understand why his happiness requires me to walk out of my own house."

Her lips pressed together.

"This situation has been difficult for everyone."

Everyone.

I almost asked whether she included me in that word.

I had spent three years carrying a debt that was not mine alone to carry.

I had sold something precious to help her son.

I had watched my savings disappear one payment at a time.

Yet the woman who had arrived that morning with a bottle of champagne was apparently the person causing trouble.

Daniel rubbed the back of his neck.

"I don't want a fight."

"Then stop telling me what I have to do without explaining why."

He looked toward his father.

Richard gave him a brief nod.

I noticed it.

So did Daniel.

He seemed to take comfort from it.

That hurt more than I expected.

Not because I needed Richard's approval, but because Daniel appeared to believe that having his parents on his side made his decision reasonable.

Margaret leaned forward.

"You need to accept that things have changed."

I looked at her hands.

She was twisting a ring around her finger.

I had seen her do that whenever she was uncomfortable.

For a moment, I felt sorry for her.

Then I remembered that she had known enough to sit in this room while her son humiliated his wife.

My sympathy disappeared.

"What exactly are you asking me to accept?"

Margaret hesitated.

Daniel answered for her.

"I'm asking you to move out."

"Where?"

He blinked.

"What?"

"Where do you expect me to go?"

He seemed genuinely annoyed by the question.

"You can stay with a friend for a while."

I let out a short breath.

I had worked late nights to pay his debt.

I had sold my apartment.

I had organized my life around his business problems.

And now he was suggesting that I find somewhere else to sleep as casually as if he were asking me to pick up groceries.

"Do you have a bag packed for me, too?"

Sophia lowered her eyes.

Daniel's face darkened.

"There's no need to be sarcastic."

I looked at him.

"You're asking me to leave my home after confessing that you've been seeing another woman for a year. Sarcasm is not the worst thing you could get from me."

Nobody answered.

I could hear the refrigerator running in the kitchen.

The ordinary sound made the whole scene feel unreal.

That refrigerator had been there during the worst months of the loan.

I had stood in front of it late at night, eating leftovers while finishing reports.

Daniel had sometimes come into the kitchen and kissed the top of my head.

He had told me we were almost through the hardest part.

I wondered whether he had already been texting Sophia in those moments.

The thought made my stomach turn.

I pushed it aside.

I did not want to fall apart in front of them.

Daniel stepped away from Sophia.

"Look, I know this is upsetting."

I said nothing.

"But I can't keep living a lie."

I stared at him.

He had been the one living two lives.

Yet he spoke as if he were finally doing something honest.

I wanted to ask him whether he had ever considered telling me the truth before I made the final payment.

I wanted to ask whether he would have confessed if the bank still expected another hundred thousand dollars.

I wanted to know whether he had loved me at any point during the previous year.

But questions were only useful when the person answering them cared about the truth.

I was beginning to doubt that Daniel did.

Margaret stood up.

She walked toward me with the careful expression of someone approaching an upset child.

"Perhaps you should go somewhere tonight and let everyone calm down."

I stepped back before she could touch my arm.

"Everyone?"

She stopped.

"Yes."

I looked around the room.

Daniel stood beside Sophia.

Richard had risen from his chair.

Margaret was in front of me.

Three people who had known about this conversation, or at least expected it, were waiting for me to accept their decision.

I was the only person who had walked into the room without knowing what was happening.

And somehow, I was expected to be the calm one.

I picked up my phone from my handbag.

Daniel watched me.

"Who are you calling?"

"Nobody."

I placed the phone back in my bag.

Then I looked at him again.

"Before we discuss where I'm going, I want to understand something."

He folded his arms.

"What?"

"The loan is paid off. Correct?"

He gave me an impatient look.

"Yes."

"The entire three hundred thousand dollars?"

"That's what you told me this morning."

"And the bank confirmed that the balance is zero?"

"Yes. Why do you keep asking me that?"

Because I wanted to hear him say it.

Because I wanted the fact to sit in the room where he had just announced that I was no longer wanted.

Because I needed to remind myself that I had not imagined the past three years.

I had done what I promised.

The debt was gone.

Whatever Daniel thought of me now, that part was true.

I nodded slowly.

"All right."

He seemed relieved.

Perhaps he thought I was finally accepting his decision.

Sophia relaxed against the couch.

Richard returned to his chair.

Margaret's shoulders dropped.

For a brief moment, they all appeared to believe that the difficult part was over.

Then Daniel said something that changed the room again.

"I knew you'd eventually understand."

I looked at him.

He had mistaken my silence for surrender.

That was almost funny.

I had spent years trying to make Daniel understand how much I was willing to do for him.

Now he believed he could dismiss me with a few sentences and still predict how I would react.

I picked up the champagne bottle.

Not because I wanted to drink it.

I simply needed something to do with my hands.

Then I set it down again.

"Daniel, do you remember what you told me when the business loan first became a problem?"

He frowned.

"What does that have to do with anything?"

"You said we were a team."

He looked away.

I continued.

"You said that once the debt was paid, we would finally have a chance to live without worrying about money."

"I was trying to encourage you."

"No. You were asking me to trust you."

His expression hardened.

"I don't see the point of this conversation."

"Neither do I."

For the first time that evening, I felt no urge to convince him of anything.

I did not need him to admit that I had been loyal.

I did not need Sophia to feel guilty.

I did not need Richard and Margaret to change their minds.

I had entered the house believing I was returning to the beginning of a better life.

Instead, I had discovered that my husband had already chosen the person he wanted beside him.

That choice belonged to him.

What happened next belonged to me.

I placed my handbag on the table and sat down in the chair opposite them.

Daniel stared at me.

"What are you doing?"

I folded my hands in my lap.

"We're going to finish this conversation."

He looked toward his father again.

Richard said nothing.

Margaret remained standing.

Sophia's confidence had begun to fade.

I could see Daniel trying to decide whether to raise his voice.

He had rarely needed to shout at me.

Usually, he could make me feel guilty with a disappointed look.

But that evening, his disappointment no longer had the same effect.

I was too tired to keep paying for peace with my silence.

I looked at him and asked the question I should have asked much earlier.

"Have you forgotten something important?"

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Question I Asked Made My Husband Stop Smiling, Because for the First Time That Evening, I Wasn’t Asking Him to Choose Me

I looked at Daniel's arm around Sophia.
