that I didn't think enough about why you made the decision.”

I looked at him carefully.

“What do you think now?”

He considered the question.

“I think you had a right to withdraw from the arrangement if you weren't comfortable with it.”

I nodded slowly.

“And I think I made it harder for us to talk by treating every conversation like another chance to get the mortgage back.”

The honesty in his voice moved me.

“Yes,” I said. “You did.”

He smiled faintly.

“I guess I deserved that answer.”

“I don't want you to think I'm keeping a scorecard.”

“I don't think you are.”

I rested my hands on the table.

“I want us to be able to talk about what happened without using it against each other.”

“I want that, too.”

We sat quietly for a moment.

Then Liam said, “I still wish the mortgage had worked out.”

“So do I.”

“I wish I hadn't put you in the position of having to make that choice.”

I felt a lump rise in my throat.

“Thank you for saying that.”

He looked at me.

“I'm not asking you to change your mind.”

“I know.”

“I just wanted you to know that I understand more than I did before.”

I reached across the table and placed my hand over his.

He held it for a moment.

That afternoon, we sat in the living room and watched an old movie.

Liam had seen it several times as a child.

He kept predicting what the characters would do.

“You always did that,” I told him.

“Did what?”

“Told everyone what was going to happen before it happened.”

He laughed.

“I was usually right.”

“You were usually loud.”

He threw his head back and laughed.

For a few minutes, I felt the old closeness return without the old expectations.

It was a good feeling.

I didn't want to turn it into a promise that everything would always be easy again.

I simply enjoyed it.

When Liam left, he hugged me at the door.

“Call me if you need anything,” he said.

“I will.”

He looked at me as though he wanted to add something.

Then he smiled and walked down the path.

I watched him drive away.

I thought about the question he had asked earlier in the week.

Would I ever help him financially again?

I still didn't know what I would do in some future situation.

Perhaps the answer would depend on the numbers.

Perhaps it would depend on my own circumstances.

Perhaps it would depend on whether we could discuss the arrangement openly and respectfully.

I no longer felt obligated to decide in advance.

That was a freedom I hadn't realized I needed.

I went inside and washed the lunch dishes.

The blue-rimmed glass Liam had given me years earlier stood beside the sink.

I dried it carefully and returned it to the cupboard.

Then I looked at the drawing on the refrigerator.

The crooked roof.

The oversized door.

The green tree.

I had kept that picture because it reminded me of the boy Liam had been.

Now it reminded me of something else, too.

People could grow.

Relationships could change.

And love could survive a difficult season without requiring anyone to pretend that nothing had happened.

I turned off the kitchen light and went upstairs.

My wrist was almost healed.

My relationship with Liam was not perfect.

But I was no longer measuring its health by how much money I was willing to put behind his plans.

I was measuring it by the way we spoke to each other, the way we listened, and the way we handled a no.

For the first time in a long while, that felt like a fairer measure.

<a
