This has become much bigger than it needed to be. We should sit down and talk like adults.**

I read it while standing beside the coffee maker.

The words were familiar.

They were the sort of words people used when they wanted a disagreement to end without having to name what had caused it.

I had used them myself.

I had said things like that when Liam was younger and two people in the family were angry with each other.

Sometimes it helped.

Sometimes it simply moved the hurt somewhere quieter.

I typed a response.

*I'm willing to have a calm conversation about what happened. I need that conversation to include the fact that I was hurt and that the argument cannot be treated as if it never happened. My decision about the mortgage remains unchanged.**

I sent it.

Chloe didn't reply immediately.

I set the phone beside the coffee maker and went to get dressed.

When I returned, a new message was waiting.

*I already said emotions got out of control. I'm not sure what else you want from me.**

I sat down.

I wanted to answer that saying emotions had gotten out of control was not the same as apologizing for what someone had done.

I wanted to say that I had not chosen to fall.

I wanted to ask why she seemed more troubled by the consequences than by the injury.

Instead, I wrote one sentence.

*I want an honest conversation about what happened, without blaming me for being hurt.**

She replied almost immediately.

*I'm not blaming you.**

I read the message and waited.

Nothing else came.

I placed the phone on the table.

I was beginning to see that we could exchange dozens of messages and still avoid the one conversation that mattered.

Chloe might have felt frightened or embarrassed by what had happened.

She might have been angry that the mortgage was no longer moving forward.

She might have believed that I was making a point at her expense.

I could imagine all those possibilities.

But I couldn't know what she truly felt unless she chose to tell me honestly.

And I couldn't make her choose that.

Later that morning, Liam called.

I nearly let it ring out.

Then I answered.

“Hello, Liam.”

“Did Chloe message you?”

“Yes.”

“What did you say to her?”

I leaned against the kitchen counter.

“I told her I'm willing to talk about what happened.”

“She's upset.”

“I imagine she is.”

“She thinks you're blaming her for everything.”

“I haven't said that.”

“You're making it difficult for us to move forward.”

I looked at the calendar.

My appointment at the clinic was written in blue ink.

Lunch with Margaret was written beneath it.

Both things were waiting for me, regardless of whether Liam understood my position.

“Liam, I can't make this conversation about whether everyone is comfortable with what I'm saying.”

“So what do you want?”

I closed my eyes for a moment.

“I want you to acknowledge that I was hurt.
