This is Aaron Walsh from Mountain Crest Lending.”

I pulled out the chair and sat down again.

“Good morning.”

“Good morning. I wanted to follow up regarding the application we discussed.”

I knew what was coming.

Still, I let him explain.

“Your withdrawal of support has been recorded. The applicants have asked whether there is any possibility of restoring the original arrangement.”

I pressed my good hand against the edge of the table.

“Have they submitted anything new?”

“Not at this time.”

“Then my decision hasn't changed.”

There was a brief pause.

“All right,” Aaron said. “I wanted to make sure you understood that we can't simply remove and restore a financial supporter without reviewing the application again.”

“I understand.”

“And I want to be clear that I can't advise you about your family situation. My role is to explain the lending requirements.”

“I appreciate that.”

He continued in the same careful tone.

“Without the income and assets previously included in the application, the numbers don't meet the requirements for the original mortgage terms.”

I looked through the window at the bare patch of garden beside the back steps.

“I understand that, too.”

“If the applicants wish to proceed, they'll need to discuss their available options with the lending team.”

“That sounds reasonable.”

“Would you like me to note that you might reconsider in the future?”

The question caught me off guard.

For a moment, I imagined how easy it would be to say yes.

It would give Liam hope.

It would soften the consequences.

It would make me seem less stubborn, less hurt, less difficult.

But I would be offering something I wasn't ready to give.

“No,” I said. “Please record that my decision is final for this application.”

“Understood.”

“Thank you for calling.”

After we ended the conversation, I remained at the table.

I wasn't angry with Aaron.

He had been polite and professional.

He had simply explained what the bank could and could not do.

The difficult part was that the financial consequences were real.

Liam and Chloe had made plans based on an arrangement that included me.

They had counted on the house.

They had counted on the furniture arriving.

They had counted on having room for Chloe's parents when they visited.

I understood all of that.

What I no longer accepted was the idea that understanding their situation meant I had to ignore my own.

I carried my tea into the living room and sat near the window.

On the shelf stood a small wooden box Liam had made in school.

He had been about ten when he brought it home.

The lid didn't fit properly, and one corner was rough where he had sanded it unevenly.

I had kept it through every move.

Inside were a few old buttons, a key that no longer opened anything, and a photograph of Liam standing beside his father at a county fair.

I took the photograph out.

Liam was grinning at the camera, one arm wrapped around his father's waist.

His father was laughing at something outside the frame.

I remembered the day clearly.

Liam had wanted to win a stuffed animal at one of the booths.

He had tried three times and failed.

His father had shown him how to hold the ball and aim.

Liam had finally knocked the targets down and won a small brown bear.

He carried it around for weeks.

I smiled at the memory before putting the photograph back.

That was the trouble with loving someone for so long.

You didn't remember only the difficult moments.

You remembered all the good ones, too.

You remembered scraped knees, birthday cakes, school plays, and the way a small hand used to reach for yours in a crowded parking lot.

You remembered the person who had once trusted you completely.

Sometimes those memories made you willing to accept things you would never accept from anyone else.

I had to ask myself whether that was love or simply fear of losing what had once been.

My phone buzzed on the side table.

Liam had sent a message.

*Aaron called me. He says the application can't go forward like this. We need to talk.**

I read it twice.

There was no mention of my wrist.

No question about how I had slept.

No acknowledgment of the porch conversation.

I typed a response.

Then I erased it.

I tried again.

*I understand what Aaron told you. My decision hasn't changed. If you want to talk about what happened between us, I'm willing to do that when we're both ready to speak respectfully.**

I read the message once more before sending it.

The reply came a few minutes later.

*So now we have to meet your conditions?**

I closed my eyes.

That was not what I had said.

I had asked for respect.

I had asked for an honest conversation.

I had not demanded that Liam agree with every word I spoke.

I had not asked him to choose between his wife and his mother.

I had asked him to recognize that I had been hurt.

I set the phone down without answering.

Later that morning, I called the clinic to ask whether I should schedule a follow-up appointment if the pain continued.

The receptionist checked my information and offered me an appointment for the following afternoon.

I accepted it.

Then I wrote the time on the calendar beside the refrigerator.

I had been putting off small things because I kept waiting for the family situation to settle down.

I had postponed a grocery trip.

I had ignored two calls from an old friend.

I had even left a book unfinished because I couldn't concentrate.

It occurred to me that I had been treating my own life as if it could wait until everyone else was comfortable.

I didn't want to keep doing that.

After lunch, I called my friend Margaret.

She answered on the fourth ring.

“Hello, stranger.”

I laughed softly.

“I know.
