7 – I Kept Waiting for My Son to Ask About My Wrist, Until I Realized That I Could Not Keep Measuring Love by the Questions He Never Asked

By the fourth day, I had stopped expecting Liam to call simply to ask how I was doing.

I wish I could say that realization came easily.

It didn't.

Every time the phone rang, a small part of me still hoped it would be him calling for a different reason.

I wanted to hear his voice without hearing the word mortgage.

I wanted him to ask whether I was sleeping comfortably or whether the brace was helping.

I wanted him to remember that something had happened to his mother.

Those were ordinary things to want.

Yet I felt foolish for wanting them so badly.

I was sixty-two years old.

I had lived long enough to know that people did not always behave the way we hoped they would.

Still, knowing that didn't stop me from missing my son.

That morning, I sat at the kitchen table and carefully loosened the brace to check my wrist.

The skin beneath it was irritated, and the joint remained tender.

I moved my fingers slowly.

The pain was manageable, but I knew I needed to be patient.

I put the brace back in place.

Then I made breakfast.

I had learned to do certain things with my good hand, although I was still clumsy.

I dropped a spoon once.

I struggled to open a container.

I had to stop and rest before carrying my plate to the table.

Each small difficulty reminded me of the previous evening in the kitchen.

I didn't want every ordinary task to become a reminder of Liam and Chloe.

But memories don't always wait for permission.

I sat down and ate.

When I finished, I washed my plate and left it on the drying rack.

Then I took my phone into the living room.

There were no new messages.

I set it beside me and opened a book.

This time, I managed to read several pages.

I had just reached the end of a chapter when the phone rang.

Liam.

I stared at his name.

For a moment, I considered letting it ring.

Then I answered.

"Hello?"

"Mom, I need to ask you something."

I waited.

He asked whether I had any information from the lender.

I told him I had not received anything new.

He said that he and Chloe were still trying to understand their options.

I listened as he described the situation again.

He spoke about the application, the income calculations, and the difficulty of moving forward without the information I had provided.

I could hear how worried he was.

I knew he wasn't pretending to be upset.

The mortgage mattered to him.

The plans mattered to him.

He had expected the purchase to move forward, and now he was facing the possibility that it wouldn't.

I felt sorry for him.

But when he finished, I asked him a question I had been holding back.

"How is Chloe?"

He seemed surprised.

"She's stressed."

"I imagine she is."

"She's worried about everything."

I nodded, although he couldn't see me.

Then I asked, "And how do you think I'm doing?"

There was a long pause.

I could hear a faint noise in the background.

Perhaps he was walking somewhere.

Perhaps he had stopped to think.

"I'm sorry you're upset," he said.

I closed my eyes.

It wasn't an apology for what had happened.

It was an acknowledgment that I had feelings about it.

Those were different things.

"I'm not asking you to fix how I feel," I said. "I wanted to know whether you'd thought about what happened."

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he said he didn't want to get into another argument.

I looked at the book resting beside me.

Neither did I.

I wasn't asking for another argument.

I wasn't asking him to choose between his wife and his mother in every disagreement.

I was asking him to recognize that the situation had begun with something that hurt me.

But he seemed unwilling to discuss it.

"All right," I said.

"Mom, I'm trying to deal with a lot right now."

"I understand."

"Then please understand that we need time to work this out."

I took a slow breath.

"I've given you time."

He went quiet.

I realized that we were having two different conversations.

He was talking about the time he needed to solve the mortgage problem.

I was talking about the time I had already spent waiting for him to acknowledge what happened.

Neither of us seemed able to reach the other.

Finally, he said he had to go.

I told him goodbye.

Then I ended the call.

I sat with the phone in my hand for a while.

I had hoped that asking about his feelings might make it easier for him to ask about mine.

Instead, I had heard the same worry again.

He was trying to deal with a lot.

So was I.

But I wasn't going to keep comparing our pain as though only one of us could be allowed to have any.

I put the phone down.

Then I returned to the book.

I read until lunchtime.

That afternoon, I began organizing some things around the house.

There were papers in a drawer that needed sorting and a small stack of letters I had been meaning to put away.

I worked slowly because of my wrist.

I took breaks when I needed them.

At one point, I found an old birthday card from Liam.

He had written it years earlier, when he was still young enough to use a marker instead of a pen.

The handwriting was uneven.

The message was simple.

He had thanked me for everything I did for him.

I sat down with the card in my hand.

I remembered the day he gave it to me.

He had been proud of himself for choosing the card and writing the message without help.

I had kept it because it reminded me of the person he had been.

I didn't want to believe that the man he had become no longer cared about me.

Perhaps he did care.

Perhaps he simply didn't know how to handle a situation in which his own choices had consequences.

Perhaps he had learned to depend on my help without realizing how much he expected from me.

Those possibilities mattered.

But they didn't erase what had happened.

I placed the card back in the drawer.

I wasn't going to throw away the good memories just because the present was painful.

I wasn't going to pretend the present was acceptable just because the past had been good.

Both things could be true.

That evening, I made a small meal and sat at the kitchen table.

I looked at the spot on the floor where I had fallen.

For the first time, I didn't immediately look away.

I allowed myself to remember it without searching for an excuse.

I had been hurt.

I had needed help.

And the response I received had not been what I expected from my son.

I couldn't change that.

But I could stop making myself responsible for explaining it away.

After dinner, I washed the dishes and turned off the kitchen light.

The next morning, there was another message from Liam.

It was brief.

He wanted to know whether I would be willing to meet with him and Chloe to discuss the situation.

I read it carefully.

There was no mention of an apology.

There was no acknowledgment of my injury.

The message didn't say what they wanted to discuss beyond the situation itself.

I sat at the table and thought about my answer.

Part of me wanted to agree.

I wanted to believe that sitting in the same room might help us understand one another.

I wanted to believe that Liam would finally listen.

But I also knew that I wasn't ready to sit down with both of them and discuss the mortgage as though that were the only matter between us.

I typed a response.

I told him I wasn't ready to have that meeting.

I said that I needed the decision about the mortgage to remain final and that I wasn't willing to discuss changing it.

Then I sent the message.

I didn't add a long explanation.

I didn't apologize for refusing.

I didn't accuse him of anything.

I simply answered.

A few minutes later, I put the phone away.

I felt sad.

I also felt a little more certain of myself.

For once, I had made a decision based on what I could honestly offer, rather than what I hoped someone would think of me afterward.

I could leave the door open to a future conversation.

I could hope that Liam and I would eventually speak more honestly.

But I wasn't going to keep putting myself in the same position and hoping that this time would be different.

I went to the kitchen and made another cup of coffee.

The brace was still uncomfortable.

The house was still quiet.

And I still missed my son.

But I was beginning to understand that missing someone did not mean I had to surrender the boundary I had set.

I could miss him.

I could love him.

And I could still say no.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: When I Finally Stopped Trying to Make Everyone Understand My Decision, I
