6 – The More I Thought About the Mortgage, the More I Realized That My Financial Help Had Quietly Become Something Everyone Expected

Two days passed without a proper conversation between Liam and me.

There were messages.

There were short questions about the mortgage.

There were a few requests for information that I had already provided to the lender.

But there was no conversation about the kitchen.

No apology.

No acknowledgment of what had happened.

I began to understand that silence could be a kind of answer, even when it wasn't the answer I wanted.

I didn't know whether Liam was avoiding the subject because he felt guilty or because he believed I was making too much of it.

I couldn't read his mind.

I could only look at what he chose to say.

And what he chose to say was almost always about the house.

On the third morning, I sat at my kitchen table and reviewed the papers I had kept.

I wanted to be certain I understood exactly what I had done.

The lender had received my request to withdraw.

Mr. Walsh had confirmed that it would be processed.

The application could no longer rely on the income and assets I had supplied.

That was the situation.

There was no hidden punishment.

There was no secret plan.

I had simply removed my financial support from an arrangement I no longer wanted to be part of.

I folded the papers and returned them to the envelope.

Then I placed the envelope in a drawer.

I didn't want to keep looking at it.

I had spent enough time thinking about the mortgage.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that my decision had been a long time coming.

The argument had forced me to look at something I had avoided for years.

I had become accustomed to helping Liam whenever he needed something.

At first, those requests had been occasional.

He was young and learning to manage his own life.

I understood that.

But over time, my help had become part of his plans.

When he and Chloe discussed buying a home, my support became one of the things they counted on.

I had agreed because I wanted them to succeed.

I hadn't thought carefully enough about what would happen if our relationship changed.

I had assumed that family disagreements would remain separate from financial commitments.

I had assumed that if things became difficult, we would talk.

Most of all, I had assumed that Liam would never treat my presence as a burden while treating my money as a necessity.

That last assumption had hurt the most.

I was not angry that he wanted a home.

I was not angry that he had made plans.

I was not even angry that he had become frustrated when those plans were threatened.

I understood all of those things.

What I couldn't accept was the expectation that I should continue supporting those plans without being allowed to speak honestly about what had happened to me.

I closed the drawer.

My wrist was improving, although it still hurt when I moved too quickly.

I adjusted the brace and carried my coffee to the living room.

I had barely sat down when the phone rang.

Chloe.

I watched the screen for a moment.

I had ignored her previous calls because I wasn't ready to speak with her.

Now I wondered whether answering might finally bring some clarity.

I picked up the phone.

"Hello, Chloe."

"Hi."

Her voice was careful.

She sounded as though she had prepared what she wanted to say before calling.

"I wanted to talk about everything."

I waited.

She continued by saying that the situation had become stressful for everyone.

She mentioned the mortgage.

She mentioned the plans they had made.

She said that Liam was worried and that the two of them were trying to work out what to do.

I listened.

Then she returned to the argument.

She described the previous evening as a moment when emotions had overwhelmed everyone.

I looked down at my wrist.

"Chloe, I was hurt."

"I know."

The answer came quickly.

But she didn't say anything else.

I waited.

I thought perhaps she would continue.

Perhaps she would apologize.

Perhaps she would say that she should not have acted as she had.

Instead, she asked whether I would consider discussing the mortgage again.

I felt my shoulders lower.

I had wanted this conversation to be different.

I had hoped that speaking to her directly would help us move beyond the carefully chosen words in her messages.

But we were back where we had started.

The mortgage.

The plans.

The financial problem.

I took a slow breath.

"I'm not changing my decision."

She went quiet.

Then she asked whether I was sure.

"Yes."

"But this affects both of us."

"I understand that."

"We were counting on your help."

I closed my eyes.

There it was again.

They had been counting on me.

I had been counting on something, too.

I had been counting on the belief that if I helped my son, he would still care about me when I needed kindness in return.

I had not expected a financial arrangement to guarantee affection.

But I had expected basic consideration.

That was not the same thing.

"I agreed to help because I wanted to," I said. "I don't want to continue now."

She didn't answer immediately.

I could hear her breathing through the phone.

Finally, she asked whether I was making this decision because of what had happened between us.

I chose my words carefully.

"I'm making it because I no longer feel comfortable being involved."

"But the mortgage is separate from that."

I looked toward the kitchen.

The table was still there.

The place where I had sat after falling was still the same.

For Chloe, perhaps the mortgage was separate.

For me, it wasn't.

The application depended on my willingness to support them.

That willingness had been connected to my trust in our relationship.

I no longer felt that trust in the same way.

I couldn't pretend otherwise simply because the consequences were inconvenient.

"I know you see it differently," I said.

She sighed.

"Then I don't know what else to say."

I felt a familiar urge to rescue the conversation.

I wanted to tell her that I wasn't trying to destroy their plans.

I wanted to reassure her that everything would work out.

I wanted to make her feel less uncomfortable.

But I had already spent years trying to keep everyone comfortable.

I was tired of being the person who had to make the difficult moment disappear.

"You don't have to say anything else," I told her.

The call ended a short time later.

I sat quietly with the phone in my hand.

I hadn't expected Chloe to agree with me.

I hadn't even expected a perfect apology.

I had hoped for an honest acknowledgment.

Instead, I had learned that she still wanted the financial problem solved before she was willing to address the personal one.

Perhaps she wasn't capable of doing both at once.

Perhaps she didn't believe both were necessary.

I couldn't know.

But I didn't need to keep calling her in the hope of finding a different answer.

I placed the phone on the table.

Then I returned to the kitchen and made myself something to eat.

It was a simple lunch.

I didn't have much appetite, but I knew I needed to take care of myself.

Afterward, I sat beside the window and watched a delivery truck stop across the street.

The driver carried a box to another house.

Someone opened the door and helped him bring it inside.

I watched the door close again.

I found myself thinking about the furniture Liam had mentioned.

I wondered what would happen to their delivery plans if the mortgage couldn't proceed.

I wondered whether they would have to change their arrangements.

I wondered whether the apartment they had given notice on would still be available if they needed more time.

The practical questions were real.

I wasn't indifferent to them.

But I had no answers.

And I wasn't responsible for finding them.

Liam and Chloe would need to speak to the lender and make their own decisions.

They might have to reconsider their budget.

They might need to adjust their plans.

They might discover another way forward.

Whatever happened, it would belong to them.

I had to let that be true.

Later that afternoon, Liam sent another message.

He asked whether I had spoken to Chloe.

I told him we had spoken briefly.

He asked what I had said.

I replied that I had confirmed my decision.

He didn't respond for several minutes.

Then a new message appeared.

He said I was leaving them with a serious problem.

I read the sentence and felt the old guilt rise again.

For a moment, I imagined changing my answer.

I imagined calling Mr. Walsh and asking whether there was any way to reverse the request.

I imagined telling Liam that I would help just this once, because I knew how much was at stake.

Then I stopped.

I had said yes so many times that the possibility of saying no still felt like a personal failure.

But I had not promised to remain involved regardless of what happened.

I had agreed to help.

I had later withdrawn.

And the lender had explained what that meant.

I could feel sorry for Liam without changing my mind.

I could care about his future without taking responsibility for it.

I could love him without financing every plan he made.

I put the phone down.

Then I walked to the window and stood there for a few minutes.

The afternoon was quiet.

I could hear the faint sound of traffic outside.

My wrist still hurt, but the pain was no longer the first thing I noticed.

I was beginning to feel the difference between a decision that was difficult and a decision that was wrong.

This one was difficult.

That didn't make it wrong.

I returned to the table and wrote a reminder on a small piece of paper.

I wrote that I had already communicated my decision and did not need to repeat it every time someone disagreed.

Then I placed the note beside the envelope containing the mortgage papers.

It wasn't a promise that I would never speak to Liam again.

It wasn't a declaration that our relationship was finished.

It was a reminder that I could leave room for reconciliation without abandoning the boundary I had finally established.

I didn't know when Liam would understand that.

I only knew that I couldn't do the understanding for him.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: I Kept Waiting for My Son to Ask About My
