answer, I woke earlier than usual.

My wrist was still sore, and the brace felt uncomfortable against my skin.

I sat on the edge of the bed for a moment before getting dressed.

There was no reason to hurry.

Nobody was waiting for me to solve a problem.

That should have felt like a relief.

Instead, I felt as if I had forgotten something important.

For years, my mornings had included checking my phone to see whether Liam needed anything.

Sometimes he wanted advice.

Sometimes he had a question about money.

Sometimes he simply wanted to talk about something that had happened at work.

I had grown accustomed to being available.

Even when I was busy, I usually answered.

Even when I was tired, I listened.

I had told myself that was what a good mother did.

Now my phone sat on the bedside table, silent.

I left it there and went downstairs.

The kitchen was cold, so I turned on the kettle and waited beside the counter.

My eyes kept returning to the place where I had fallen.

I had cleaned the floor the previous afternoon, but I could still picture myself sitting there, unable to get up without pain.

I remembered asking for help.

I remembered Liam looking at Chloe.

And I remembered how quickly the argument had become more important than my injury.

I pressed my good hand against the counter.

I didn't want to spend the rest of my life replaying that moment.

But I couldn't pretend it hadn't happened.

When the kettle clicked off, I made my coffee and carried it to the table.

My phone was waiting beside the folded mortgage papers.

I had moved it there the night before without thinking.

I turned it over.

There was a message from Liam.

He wanted to know whether I had received any new information from the lender.

I read it once.

Then I put the phone down.

He had not asked about my wrist.

I was beginning to recognize that omission as clearly as I recognized the words he actually wrote.

I didn't know whether he was deliberately avoiding the subject.

Perhaps he was embarrassed.

Perhaps he thought I would bring it up when I was ready.

Perhaps he genuinely believed the mortgage was the only problem that needed attention.

I couldn't know.

But I could decide not to keep chasing an explanation.

I finished my coffee.

Then I sat down with a notebook and wrote a short list of things I needed to do that week.

There were ordinary household errands, a few appointments, and some paperwork of my own.

I deliberately left Liam's name off the page.

It felt strange.

Almost wrong.

I had spent so long organizing my life around being useful to him that making plans without considering his needs felt like a small act of disobedience.

I knew how foolish that sounded.

Still, it was the truth.

I had to learn how to live as a person whose entire day didn't depend on whether her son was happy with her.

That morning, I started with the easiest task.

I put away the dishes.

I wiped the counter.

I folded the towel I had been using to support my wrist.

Then I went outside for a few minutes.

The air was cool, and the street was quiet.

I stood near the front steps and looked at the house.

It was the same house I had lived in before the argument.

The same windows.

The same front door.

The same storm door Liam had tried to get through when he came asking about the mortgage.

Nothing about the building had changed.

But I felt different standing there.

For the first time, I understood that my home could be a place where I set the terms of a conversation.

I didn't have to open the door simply because the person outside was my son.

I didn't have to invite someone inside because refusing would make them uncomfortable.

And I didn't have to explain every decision until the other person agreed with it.

I could simply say no.

I went back inside and locked the door.

A little before noon, the phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

Liam.

I let it ring twice before answering.

"Hello?"

"Mom, have you heard anything?"

His voice sounded tired.

"From the lender?"

"Yes."

"I haven't received anything new."

He sighed.

"They told us the application can't move forward the way it was."

"I understand."

"We're trying to figure out what to do."

I waited.

He didn't say anything about the previous evening.

He didn't ask how my wrist was healing.

Instead, he began explaining the financial situation again.

He told me they had planned around the mortgage approval.

He reminded me that they had already made arrangements for the apartment.

He spoke about the furniture delivery and the things they had expected to do after moving.

I listened without interrupting.

When he finished, I asked him a question.

"Have you and Chloe spoken to the lender about your other options?"

There was a pause.

"That's what we're trying to do."

"Then I hope you find something that works."

"Mom, that's not what I'm asking."

I closed my eyes briefly.

I knew what he wanted.

He wanted me to offer a solution.

He wanted me to say that I would reconsider, or that I would speak to Mr. Walsh, or that I would find another way to keep the application alive.

I couldn't do any of those things honestly.

"I know you're worried," I said. "But my decision hasn't changed."

He became quiet.

Then he said something that hurt more than I expected.

"I don't understand why you would do this to us."

I looked at my injured wrist.

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

He was talking as though the financial problem had appeared from nowhere.

As though I had woken up one morning and decided to interfere with his life.

I wanted to remind him that I had agreed to help in the first place.

I wanted to remind him that I had been willing to put my financial stability behind their plans because I loved him.

But I didn't want to turn the conversation into a list of sacrifices.

Those sacrifices had been my choices.

What mattered now was the choice I was making.

"I'm not trying to hurt you," I said.

"Then why won't you help?"

"Because I don't want to remain part of this application."

"After everything we've planned?"

"Yes."

He breathed out sharply.

I could hear movement in the background, but I couldn't tell where he was.

I waited for him to say something else.

Instead, he told me that he had to go.

The call ended.

I sat quietly with the phone in my hand.

I had hoped that speaking calmly would make the conversation easier.

It hadn't.

But I hadn't shouted, either.

I hadn't insulted him.

I hadn't changed my answer simply because he was upset.

That mattered.

I put the phone down and returned to my list.

For the rest of the afternoon, I focused on things I could control.

I arranged the paperwork I needed for my own affairs.

I made sure I had the information related to my withdrawal.

I kept the lender's contact details with the documents so I wouldn't have to search for them later.

I didn't send Liam copies of anything he already had access to.

I didn't call to check whether he had spoken to the lender.

I left that responsibility where it belonged.

That evening, I ate dinner at the kitchen table.

I had always liked eating there because the window faced the street, and I could watch the neighborhood settle down for the night.

Usually, I would have checked my phone between bites.

I might have sent Liam a message asking how his day had gone.

I might have reminded him about something he needed to do.

That evening, I didn't.

I ate my meal.

I washed my plate.

I put the remaining food away.

Then I sat in the living room with a book I had been meaning to finish.

I read several pages before realizing I had been staring at the same paragraph.

My thoughts kept returning to Liam.

I wondered whether he was angry with me.

I wondered whether Chloe was telling him that I had acted unfairly.

I wondered whether he was beginning to understand why I had withdrawn my support.

There was no way to know.

I closed the book and rested it on my lap.

I still loved my son.

That hadn't changed.

What had changed was my willingness to prove that love by making myself responsible for every difficult thing in his life.

I had mistaken constant availability for closeness.

I had mistaken financial help for security.

And I had mistaken his willingness to accept my support for proof that our relationship was healthy.

Those mistakes were mine.

I couldn't undo them in a day.

But I could stop repeating them.

Before going to bed, I checked my phone once more.

There was no new message from Liam.

I felt disappointed.

I also felt relieved.

Both feelings could exist together.

I put the phone on the bedside table and turned off the light.

The next morning, I woke with less urgency than I had felt the day before.

My wrist still needed time to heal.

My relationship with Liam needed something I couldn't provide on my own.

I understood that now.

I couldn't make him apologize.

I couldn't make him see the situation the way I saw it.

I couldn't make him care about the right things.

All I could do was stop pretending that I had the power to fix everything.

I got dressed, went downstairs, and made breakfast.

Then I opened the curtains and let the morning light into the kitchen.

For the first time in several days, I didn't feel the need to check my phone immediately.

I had things to do.

My own life to manage.

And for once, I intended to give those things the same attention I had always given my son's needs.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6:
