You were so frightened at first that you could barely look at the paperwork. Now you're making calls and asking questions."

I considered that.

He was right.

The problems had not vanished.

But I was no longer avoiding them.

Michael closed the folder.

"Mom, can I tell you something about Dad?"

I nodded.

"When I read my letter, I felt as though he was criticizing me. I spent days thinking about what he might have meant."

I listened.

"Then I realized I was hearing the words through everything I already worried about."

He paused.

"I still don't know exactly what he wanted me to understand. But I know I don't want to spend the rest of my life trying to prove that he was wrong about me."

I reached across the table.

"You don't have to prove anything to me."

He looked at me.

"I know that now."

We sat quietly.

Then he smiled.

"Maybe I should have asked you that a long time ago."

I squeezed his hand.

"Maybe I should have told you."

That was the truth.

I had spent years expecting my children to recognize my feelings without hearing me express them.

They had spent years trying to interpret what I wanted.

We had all made mistakes.

We could not go back.

But we could speak differently now.

After Michael left, I called Stephanie.

I told her about our conversation.

She said she understood what he meant.

She had been doing the same thing with her own letter.

"I kept thinking Dad must have been telling me I wasn't good enough," she said.

I sat down.

"Do you still think that?"

"No. Not exactly."

She paused.

"I think I was already afraid I wasn't good enough. The letter touched that fear."

I felt a deep tenderness for her.

I had known my daughter all her life.

Yet I had not always understood the things she kept hidden behind her confidence.

"I wish you had told me," I said.

"I wish I had known how."

We talked for a while.

Neither of us tried to solve the past.

We simply acknowledged it.

That evening, Danny called.

He had been thinking about the family dinner.

He said he was glad we had been able to speak honestly.

I told him I was glad, too.

Then I asked whether he still felt he had been overlooked when he was younger.

He did not answer immediately.

"Sometimes," he admitted.

I let the silence remain.

"But I don't want to keep carrying that feeling around forever," he continued. "I want to do things differently with Ethan and Noah."

I smiled.

"You can."

"I know. And I want to do things differently with you, too."

I felt tears in my eyes.

"What do you mean?"

"I want to tell you when I'm struggling. I don't want you to think I'm fine just because I'm not asking for help."

I took a breath.

"And I want you to feel that you can tell me without worrying that I'll make your problem mine."

He laughed softly.

"That would be good."

We agreed to keep trying.

After we hung up, I walked to the desk and opened the drawer.

I placed the folder containing the letters beside the notebook.

Then I closed the drawer.

I had once thought that understanding Walt's letters would bring us to the end of a difficult chapter.

Now I understood that there might never be one final moment when everything made sense.

The letters would remain part of our story.

So would the arguments.

So would the apologies.

So would the dinners, the telephone calls, and the small acts of care that followed.

What mattered was not whether we could agree on every word Walt had written.

What mattered was whether we could build something honest from the questions he had left behind.

I went into the kitchen.

Walt's coffee mug was beside the sink.

I picked it up, washed it, and dried it with a clean towel.

Then I placed it on the shelf.

I no longer needed to leave it beside the sink as though I were waiting for him to return and use it.

I could put it away.

I could take it out again when I wanted to remember him.

I could miss him without keeping every part of my life exactly as it had been.

That night, I wrote one last sentence in my notebook.

The past can teach me something without deciding everything that comes next.

I closed the cover.

Then I turned off the light.

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: After Losing My Husband and Fearing I Had Lost Everything Else, I Finally Learned That Family Was Not a Promise of Perfection but a Choice We Had to Keep Making

The folder remained in the desk drawer for several days.
