I said.

"He used to follow him around the house."

Stephanie turned the photograph over.

"I wonder whether Dad knew how much that meant to Danny."

I looked at the picture.

"I hope he did."

We placed the photographs in separate piles.

Some I wanted to keep close.

Others could be stored safely.

There were a few that I had forgotten existed.

I realized that I did not need to keep every photograph on display to remember the people in it.

I could choose the ones that meant the most to me.

That was another small lesson in letting go.

Stephanie helped me put the photographs away.

Before she left, she asked whether I had made a decision about the house.

"Not yet."

She nodded.

"That's all right."

I smiled.

"You sound like your brothers."

"Maybe we're finally learning to say useful things."

We laughed.

After she left, I went into the bedroom and opened Walt's side of the closet.

I took out the shirt with the small tear near the cuff.

I had promised to repair it.

I had never done so.

I held the shirt for a while.

Then I folded it and placed it in a box with a few other things I wanted to keep.

I did not keep every shirt.

I did not throw everything away.

I chose what mattered to me.

The process took longer than I expected.

Sometimes I had to stop.

Sometimes I found myself sitting on the edge of the bed, holding something ordinary and remembering a day I had not thought about in years.

I let myself feel those things.

Then I continued when I was ready.

I did not tell myself that I was weak for needing time.

I did not tell myself that I was betraying Walt by making space.

I was learning to live with his absence.

That did not mean I had to remain surrounded by every object he had touched.

The following week, I invited the children to dinner.

I wanted to tell them what I had been considering.

Michael arrived with Jenna.

Stephanie came a little later.

Danny and Kayla brought the boys.

We ate at the family table.

The boys talked about school.

Jenna asked about the photographs I had been sorting.

Stephanie told a story about something one of the girls had done.

Michael laughed.

Danny shook his head and said the boys were no better.

For a while, I let the conversation continue without directing it.

Then, after dinner, I told them I wanted to discuss the house.

Everyone became quiet.

I explained what I had been thinking.

I told them I was considering whether a smaller place might be easier to manage.

I also told them I had not made a final decision.

Michael listened.

Stephanie looked thoughtful.

Danny rested his hands on the table.

When I finished, I asked whether anyone wanted to say something.

Michael spoke first.

"I think you should do what makes your life manageable."

Stephanie nodded.

"I would miss this house. But I don't want you to stay here because you think you owe us that."

Danny looked at me.

"I'd miss it too. But I want you to be comfortable."

I looked at all three of them.

I had been afraid that changing the house would feel like losing another part of Walt.

Instead, my children were giving me permission to consider a future that belonged to me.

I had not realized how much I needed to hear that.

"Thank you," I said.

Stephanie reached for my hand.

"You don't have to decide tonight."

I smiled.

"No. I don't."

We finished the evening talking about other things.

When everyone had gone, I walked through the house one last time before bed.

I did not know whether I would eventually stay or leave.

But I knew the decision no longer had to be made out of guilt.

I could remember the life Walt and I had built.

I could cherish the rooms where our children had grown up.

And I could still choose something different if it was right for me.

That night, I slept better than I had in weeks.

Not because the future was settled.

Because I had stopped treating it as something I was not allowed to change.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: When I Finally Read the Letters Without Expecting Them to Solve Everything, I Understood That Their Meaning Would Come From What We Chose to Do Next

I did not decide what to do about the house in a single afternoon.
