But I want to hear what you want, not just what you think you should do."

I was quiet.

For years, I had answered questions like that by thinking about what would make everyone else comfortable.

I had considered the children's memories.

I had considered what Walt might have wanted.

I had considered what other people would say if I sold the house.

I had not spent much time asking myself what kind of life I wanted now.

"I want to feel safe," I said at last.

Michael waited.

"I want to be able to pay my bills without being afraid every time the mail comes. I want to have enough energy to see my grandchildren. And I don't want to spend all my time maintaining a house because I'm afraid of letting go."

He was silent for a moment.

"That makes sense."

I felt tears rise in my eyes.

It was such a simple response.

He had not argued.

He had not told me I was being sentimental.

He had not tried to persuade me that one choice was better than another.

He had listened.

We agreed to continue reviewing the information before making any decision.

When we hung up, I wrote down what I had said.

I want to feel safe.

I want to enjoy my family.

I want to stop being afraid of every choice.

I read the words again.

They were not a financial plan.

But they were a beginning.

Stephanie visited the next day.

She found me sorting the papers into separate folders.

She put her handbag on the chair and looked at the labels.

"You've become very organized."

I smiled.

"Don't tell your father. He'll think I've finally learned something."

Stephanie laughed.

Then she sat beside me.

We worked together for a while.

She helped me arrange the household documents and made a list of the things I wanted to keep in a safe place.

She did not try to take over.

When she finished, she asked whether I wanted to go for a walk.

I said yes.

We walked slowly along the street.

The weather was mild, and the trees had begun dropping leaves onto the pavement.

Stephanie told me about a disagreement she had recently had with one of the girls.

She had been impatient.

She had apologized.

Then she had tried to explain why she had become upset.

"I think I used to believe that apologizing made me look weak," she said.

I glanced at her.

"What do you think now?"

"That refusing to apologize makes everything harder."

I smiled.

"That sounds like something your father could have learned."

Stephanie laughed.

We walked another block.

Then she asked whether I had been thinking about him.

"Every day."

"Do you ever feel angry with him?"

The question surprised me.

I considered it honestly.

"Sometimes."

Stephanie looked at me.

"Really?"

"Of course."

I told her that I sometimes wished Walt had explained more about the financial situation.

I wished he had told me what was worrying him.

I wished he had trusted me enough to let me share the burden while he was alive.

Stephanie listened.

I felt a strange sense of relief as I spoke.

I had spent months believing that being angry with Walt would somehow mean I loved him less.

But I could miss him and still be upset.

I could be grateful for the life we had built and still wish some things had been different.

Love did not erase every disappointment.

It gave me a reason to face those disappointments honestly.

Stephanie slipped her arm through mine.

"I think I feel that way too."

We continued walking.

Neither of us needed to say more.

That evening, Danny called to tell me that Ethan had asked whether he could visit me again soon.

I laughed.

"Tell him he doesn't need to ask. He's always welcome."

Danny sounded pleased.

Then he asked how I was doing.

I told him about the conversations with Michael and Stephanie.

I told him that I was beginning to think more seriously about what I wanted from the future.

He listened.

When I finished, he said, "I'm glad."

I asked why.

"Because I don't want you to spend the rest of your life trying to make things easy for everyone else."

I sat quietly.

Danny had always been the child who noticed when someone was uncomfortable.

Perhaps he had spent so much time noticing other people's feelings that he had learned to hide his own.

I wished I had understood that earlier.

"I don't want you doing that either," I told him.

He laughed softly.

"I'll try."

"Good. We can both try."

After the call, I took the folder containing Walt's letters from the drawer.

I placed it on the table beside the notebook.

I did not open it.

I no longer felt that I had to read the letters whenever I was uncertain.

They were part of our family story.

They were not the whole story.

I thought about the first evening, when the three envelopes had sat on Danny's cheap folding table.

I remembered Michael's impatience.

I remembered Stephanie's anger.

I remembered Danny holding Noah while the rest of us tried to understand what Walt had left behind.

At the time, I had believed that the letters might decide what happened to our family.

Now I understood that the letters could not make those choices for us.

We had to make them ourselves.

We had to decide whether we would keep speaking.

We had to decide whether we would listen when someone said they were hurt.

We had to decide whether we would allow each other to change.

The letters had started a conversation.

They could not finish it.

I returned the folder to the drawer.

Then I washed my cup and set it beside Walt's old coffee mug.

I looked at the two cups standing together near the sink.

One belonged to the life I had shared with my husband.

The other belonged to the life I was still learning to live.

For the first time, I did not feel that I had to choose between them.

I turned off the kitchen light.

Tomorrow, I would continue sorting the papers.

I would make the calls that needed to be made.

I would listen to my children.

I would let them listen to me.

And when the time came to decide what to do about the house, I would try to make that decision from a place of honesty rather than fear.

I still missed Walt.

I still worried about the future.

But I was no longer waiting for someone else to tell me that I was allowed to begin again.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: When I Finally Stopped Trying to Guess What My Children Needed From Me, I Began to Understand What It Meant to Build a Family Based on Honesty

By the beginning of the next week, I had made a decision about one thing.
