I just wanted to talk."

"All right."

I told him I had been thinking about the letters.

He was quiet.

"So have I," he said.

"Do you think Dad wanted us to change?"

Danny took a moment before answering.

"I think he wanted us to understand something. I'm just not sure he knew how to explain it."

I smiled sadly.

"That sounds like your father."

Danny laughed.

"Yes, it does."

I asked whether he had read his letter again.

"No."

"Do you think you will?"

"Maybe when I'm ready."

I understood.

We had spent so much time treating the letters as though they contained a final answer.

Perhaps we needed to stop expecting them to do that.

Walt had written them.

We could read them.

We could think about them.

We could disagree with parts of what we believed they meant.

But we could not make the letters into a conversation with a man who was no longer here to answer us.

I told Danny that I was trying to accept that.

He said he was trying, too.

Before we ended the call, he asked whether I wanted him to come over that weekend.

I said yes.

Not because I needed him to fix something.

Because I wanted to see him.

On Saturday, Danny arrived with Kayla and the boys.

Ethan carried a small plastic container filled with toy cars.

Noah ran toward me with his arms out.

I bent down and hugged him.

The weight of him in my arms reminded me of the days when my own children were small enough to carry.

I had spent so much time worrying about whether my family would remain close that I had nearly forgotten to enjoy the closeness that was still there.

Kayla helped me prepare lunch.

Danny took the boys into the living room.

After we ate, I sat beside him at the kitchen table.

I told him what I had been thinking about Walt.

Danny listened.

When I finished, he looked toward the living room.

"I used to think Dad didn't talk because he didn't want us to know what he was feeling."

I waited.

"Now I wonder whether he sometimes didn't know how to explain it himself."

I nodded.

"That may be true."

Danny rubbed his hands together.

"I don't want to do that with my boys."

"Then you don't have to."

He looked at me.

"I know it won't always be easy."

"No," I said. "It won't."

We sat quietly for a moment.

Then he asked whether I had made a decision about the house.

I told him I was still considering my options.

He nodded.

"That's all right."

I smiled.

"You all keep telling me that."

"Maybe because you keep thinking you need to have an answer."

He was right.

I had spent much of my life believing that a responsible person should always know what came next.

I had confused certainty with strength.

Now I was learning that sometimes strength meant admitting I did not know.

Later, after Danny and his family left, I returned to the desk.

I opened the drawer and took out the notebook.

I turned to a fresh page.

At the top, I wrote:

Things I Can Choose.

I listed the decisions that belonged to me.

I could decide how to handle the papers.

I could ask questions when I did not understand something.

I could accept help without letting someone else make every decision.

I could choose whether to stay in the house.

I could tell my children when I was hurt.

I could listen when they told me the same.

Then I wrote one final sentence.

I could love Walt without pretending he had understood everything.

I put down the pen.

That sentence felt important.

For a long time, I had defended Walt whenever one of the children questioned something he had said or done.

I had believed that protecting his memory meant protecting him from criticism.

But Walt was gone.

He did not need me to make him perfect.

My children did not need me to pretend he had been perfect.

And I did not need to spend the rest of my life trying to interpret every silence he had left behind.

I could remember the good things.

I could admit the difficult things.

Both were true.

That evening, I placed the notebook beside the folder containing the letters.

I did not hide either one.

Then I made myself a cup of tea and sat at the kitchen table.

I looked around the room where we had eaten so many meals.

I thought about the years when the children were young.

I thought about the years when they had grown distant.

I thought about the recent weeks, when we had begun finding our way back toward one another.

Nothing had become simple.

But it had become more honest.

And that was enough for one day.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: When My Children Asked What I Wanted Instead of Telling Me What to Do, I Finally Felt Ready to Face the Future Without Measuring My Worth by What I Had Lost

I found the letter again on a Thursday morning.
