You can actually find things now."

I laughed.

"Don't sound so surprised."

He grinned.

Then he became serious.

"Mom, there's something else we should talk about."

I felt my shoulders tighten.

"What is it?"

"The house."

I sat down.

I had known the subject would come up eventually.

The house had been part of our lives for decades.

Walt had maintained it himself whenever he could.

He knew which windows needed extra attention in winter and which cabinet doors never closed properly.

Every room held memories.

But a house also had expenses.

Repairs did not stop because a person was grieving.

Neither did bills.

Michael explained that we needed a clearer picture of the costs involved in keeping the property.

He did not tell me to sell.

He did not tell me to stay.

He asked whether I wanted to review the numbers with him.

I agreed.

We went through the expenses we knew about.

Some were predictable.

Others needed checking.

We made a list of possible repairs and noted which ones were urgent and which could wait.

When we finished, Michael put down his pen.

"You don't have to decide today."

I looked at him.

"Would you want me to sell it?"

He considered the question.

"I want you to be safe, Mom. I want you to be able to afford the life you have. But I don't want you making a decision because you're afraid I'll judge you."

I had not expected that answer.

I looked around the room.

The curtains were the ones Walt had chosen.

The table had a small scratch from the time Stephanie had dropped a heavy serving dish.

The floor near the back door had a faint mark where Danny had once dragged a box inside.

This house had held our lives.

But it could not hold them forever.

"I don't know what I want yet," I said.

Michael nodded.

"Then we don't need to pretend you do."

After he left, I walked through the house.

I stopped in the living room.

Then the kitchen.

Then the bedroom.

I imagined staying.

I imagined leaving.

Neither picture felt easy.

That was not proof that one choice was wrong.

It was proof that both choices meant something.

A few days later, Stephanie visited.

I told her about the conversation with Michael.

She sat quietly while I explained the figures and the questions we still needed answered.

When I finished, she asked how I felt.

"Confused."

"That's understandable."

"I thought I would know what to do once I saw the numbers."

She shook her head.

"Numbers can tell you what something costs. They can't tell you what it means to you."

I looked at her.

That was a good way to put it.

We talked about the house.

Stephanie remembered the kitchen where she had learned to bake.

She remembered the room where she had spent hours talking to her friends on the telephone.

She remembered Walt teaching her how to drive in the driveway.

Then she admitted that she sometimes felt guilty about how rarely she visited after moving away.

"I always thought there would be more time," she said.

I understood.

I had thought the same thing about many conversations with Walt.

More time to ask questions.

More time to explain myself.

More time to understand him.

Time had not waited for us to become ready.

Stephanie reached for my hand.

"Whatever you decide, I don't want you to feel that selling the house means you're selling your memories."

I felt tears rise in my eyes.

"I know."

She squeezed my fingers.

"I just wanted you to hear me say it."

That evening, I called Danny.

I told him that Michael and I had begun looking at the costs of keeping the house.

Danny listened.

When I finished, he asked whether I wanted his opinion.

I told him I did.

He thought for a moment.

"I love that house because it's where we grew up. But it's your home now, Mom. You shouldn't have to keep it just because we have memories there."

I stared at the telephone.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

He paused.

"I would miss it. But I would miss you more if you stayed there because you felt you had no other choice."

I had to sit down.

For years, I had believed that my children would be hurt if I changed anything about the life we had built.

Now they were telling me that they could miss something and still let me make my own decision.

That was a kind of love I had not fully understood before.

The next morning, I wrote two headings in my notebook.

Reasons to stay.

Reasons to consider leaving.

Under the first, I wrote down the memories, the familiar rooms, and the comfort of knowing every corner.

Under the second, I wrote down the costs, the repairs, and the possibility of living somewhere that required less work.

I did not choose a side.

I put the notebook away.

Then I opened the kitchen window and let in the cool morning air.

The house smelled faintly of coffee and the soap I had used on the counter.

I stood there for a while.

I did not need to know the answer yet.

For the first time, I believed that whatever I decided, I could make the choice without treating it as a betrayal.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: As I Tried to Understand What Walt Had Wanted From Us, I Realized That the Best Way to Honor Him Might Be to Stop Living by His Unspoken Expectations

The first decision I made without asking any of my children what they thought was a small one.
