We can start with the statements we haven't figured out."

I appreciated that he had remembered how easily I became overwhelmed.

We sat at the kitchen table.

The refrigerator hummed behind us.

Walt's old coffee mug stood beside the sink, clean and dry.

Michael opened the folder and took out a statement.

He explained what he could, then wrote down the questions that needed professional answers.

When he didn't know something, he admitted it.

That mattered more to me than he probably realized.

For years, I had thought of Michael as the person who could always find a solution.

Watching him work through uncertainty showed me something different.

He was capable.

He was also human.

At one point, he put down his pen.

"Mom, I want to be honest with you."

I waited.

"I can help you understand these papers, but I don't want you thinking I know how to fix everything."

I looked at him.

"I don't expect you to fix everything."

He seemed relieved.

"I know you say that. I just want to make sure you mean it."

I reached across the table and touched his hand.

"I mean it."

We continued working.

By lunchtime, we had made progress.

Not enough to settle my worries, but enough to make the next steps clearer.

Michael gathered the papers into neat piles.

He placed the questions that needed answers at the top of the folder.

Then he asked whether I wanted him to arrange another time for us to continue.

I told him yes.

After he left, I put the folder away and stood at the kitchen window.

I thought about how frightened I had been when I first called my children.

I had expected the calls to tell me something about their love for me.

In some ways, they had.

But I had also learned that love could not be measured by one conversation.

It had to be watched over time.

The next morning, Stephanie called.

She asked whether I would like to spend the afternoon with her.

I told her I had a few things to do around the house.

"Bring them with you," she said.

I laughed.

"You make it sound as though I can carry my entire house in a handbag."

"Not the entire house. Just whatever is making you worry."

Her voice was light, but I understood what she meant.

I agreed to visit.

When I arrived, she had prepared tea and put a plate of biscuits on the table.

We sat in her kitchen.

For a while, we talked about the children and ordinary family matters.

Then Stephanie asked whether Michael was still helping me.

"He is."

"Good."

She folded her hands around her cup.

"I've been thinking about something."

"What is it?"

"After Dad died, I kept waiting for you to tell us you were all right."

I looked at her.

She continued before I could answer.

"I know that sounds selfish. But I think I wanted you to be all right because I didn't know what I would do if you weren't."

I let her speak.

"I had my own family to look after. Work was busy. The girls needed things. And whenever I thought about you being alone, I felt guilty."

She looked down at her tea.

"So sometimes I didn't call because I didn't know what to say."

I felt a familiar sadness.

"Stephanie, you could have told me that."

"I know."

She looked at me.

"But I was afraid you would think I didn't care."

I took a breath.

"I was afraid you didn't care."

Her eyes filled with tears.

Neither of us spoke for a moment.

Then she reached across the table.

"I'm sorry, Mom."

I held her hand.

"I'm sorry too."

We did not try to decide whose apology mattered more.

We simply let them stand between us.

When I left, Stephanie walked me to the car.

She hugged me before I opened the door.

"I'll call you tomorrow," she said.

I smiled.

"You don't have to make a promise just because we're having a good conversation."

"I know."

She paused.

"But I want to call you tomorrow."

That was different.

I drove home thinking about the difference between an obligation and a choice.

Walt had spent much of his life believing that responsibility was how a person showed love.

I had believed that keeping the peace was how a person protected it.

Our children had grown up watching us.

Perhaps they had inherited more of our fears than we realized.

That evening, Danny called.

He wanted to know whether I had eaten.

I told him I had.

He asked what I had eaten.

I told him that, too.

"All right," he said. "I won't come over with groceries, then."

I laughed.

"You can still visit without bringing food."

"That's good to know."

We talked about the boys.

Ethan had been learning to read longer sentences.

Noah had decided that every toy belonged in the same box, regardless of its size.

Danny sounded tired but happy.

Before we ended the call, I asked him whether he was managing all right.

He hesitated.

"Mostly."

"Mostly isn't the same as all right."

"No," he admitted. "It isn't."

I waited.

He told me that some expenses had come up and that he was trying to work out how to manage them.

He did not ask me for money.

He did not make his problem sound smaller than it was.

He simply told me the truth.

I listened, then asked whether he wanted advice or whether he needed someone to hear him.

"Someone to hear me," he said.

So I listened.

When he finished, I told him I was sorry things were difficult.

He thanked me.

There was something comforting about that conversation.

For once, I had not been the only person allowed to be frightened.

We were both adults trying to manage lives that did not always cooperate with our plans.

I could care about Danny without taking responsibility for every problem he faced.

He could care about me without pretending he had no problems of his own.

That night, I opened my notebook.

I looked at the list of questions.

Then I added a new line beneath them.

Ask for help without asking anyone to become someone they are not.

I read it twice.

Then I closed the notebook and went to bed.

The house was still quiet.

But I no longer thought of the quiet as proof that I had been abandoned.

Sometimes, it was simply the space between one conversation and the next.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: When I Began Making Decisions About My Own Future, I Discovered That My Children Could Stand Beside Me Without Having to Choose My Life for Me

The first thing I learned was that a person could be grateful and still be afraid.
