But I don't know whether you'd like my answer."

She laughed too.

It was a small exchange.

But it reminded me that our relationship could change without becoming something unrecognizable.

We could still be mother and daughter.

We could simply learn to speak to one another differently.

Danny continued visiting regularly.

He usually came with the boys, and the house was never quiet for long.

Ethan had begun asking whether he could help me cook.

Noah preferred to sit on the kitchen floor and play with whatever safe object he could reach.

Danny often brought groceries, even when I told him I had plenty.

I finally stopped arguing about it.

Instead, I began preparing something for his family when I knew they were coming.

Sometimes it was a casserole.

Sometimes it was a bag of fruit for the boys.

Sometimes it was nothing more than a container of leftovers.

Danny always thanked me.

I always told him he didn't need to.

Then we laughed because we both knew how that conversation would end.

One afternoon, while Danny was fixing a loose handle on a kitchen cabinet, I watched him work.

He had brought his own tools.

He checked the screws, tightened the handle, and tested it twice.

Walt used to do the same thing.

I stood beside the counter.

"You learned that from your father."

Danny looked up.

"I learned a lot from him."

I nodded.

"I wish I had told him that more often."

Danny put the screwdriver down.

"I think he knew."

I wanted to believe that.

Perhaps Walt had understood more than he had been able to say.

Perhaps the letters had been his attempt to leave us something useful when he could no longer guide us himself.

I could not be certain.

But I no longer felt the need to force an answer.

Some questions could remain open without preventing a person from moving forward.

That evening, I took out the folder containing the letters.

I had not read them again since the family dinner.

I placed it on the table and looked at the envelopes.

The paper had begun to soften at the folds.

The red wax seal on Danny's envelope was broken.

A small fragment remained tucked inside the folder.

I remembered picking it up from the floor.

I remembered how frightened I had been that evening.

I had thought the letters would either explain everything or destroy whatever peace we had left.

Neither had happened.

Instead, they had made us uncomfortable enough to begin speaking honestly.

That was not a small thing.

I carefully placed the envelopes back in the folder.

Then I called Michael.

He answered with a cheerful greeting.

"Hi, Mom."

"Do you have a minute?"

"Sure. What's up?"

I hesitated.

"I wanted to ask you something about your father."

His voice became quieter.

"Okay."

"Did he ever tell you that he was worried about our family?"

Michael thought for a moment.

"Not directly."

"What about indirectly?"

He gave a small laugh.

"Dad wasn't exactly a man who liked talking about worries."

I smiled sadly.

"No, he wasn't."

Michael continued.

"He used to ask whether we were taking care of each other. I thought he meant practical things. Making sure everyone had what they needed."

I looked at the folder.

"Perhaps he meant more than that."

"Maybe."

We talked for a while about Walt.

Michael remembered the way his father used to check the locks before bed.

He remembered the old chair in the living room and the way Walt always fell asleep while watching television.

He remembered a time when he had been ill as a child and his father had slept in a chair beside his bed.

I listened to every detail.

I had been there for those years, too.

But hearing Michael remember them brought the memories back in a different way.

When we ended the call, I felt grateful.

Not because we had solved anything.

Because we had spoken about Walt without arguing about what he had meant.

The following day, Stephanie came over with a small box of photographs.

She had found them while sorting through her own belongings.

We spread them across the kitchen table.

There were photographs of the children when they were young.

There were pictures from birthdays, holidays, and family gatherings.

One showed Walt standing behind the three children in the garden.

Michael was trying to look serious.

Stephanie was smiling at the camera.

Danny was looking at his father instead.

I picked up the photograph.

"Look at Danny."

Stephanie leaned closer.

"He always watched Dad."

"Yes."

She studied the picture.

"I think he wanted Dad's attention more than we realized."

I felt a familiar ache.

"Perhaps we all wanted more than we knew how to ask for."

Stephanie looked at me.

Then she nodded.

We continued sorting the photographs.

Some made us laugh.

Others made us quiet.

There were pictures of people who were no longer alive and children who had grown into adults.

There were moments I had almost forgotten.

I realized that a family was not one story.

It was hundreds of small stories layered together.

Each person remembered different things.

Each person carried different hurts.

And each person had a different idea of what love should look like.

I had spent years believing that if I loved my children enough, they would automatically understand what I needed.

Now I knew better.

Love required words.

It required attention.

It required the courage to say when something hurt.

And it required the humility to listen when someone else said the same thing.

When Stephanie left, she hugged me at the door.

"Let's do this again."

I smiled.

"I'd like that."

After she drove away, I returned to the kitchen.

The folder containing Walt's letters was still on the table.

I placed it in the desk drawer beside the notebook.

I did not lock the drawer.

I did not hide the folder beneath a stack of papers.

I simply put it away where I could find it when I needed it.

Then I stood at the window and looked out at the quiet street.

My financial problems had not disappeared.

I still had difficult decisions ahead.

I still missed Walt every day.

And I still wondered whether I would ever understand everything he had tried to tell us.

But I no longer felt that I had to answer every question before I could begin living again.

My children were calling.

They were visiting.

They were learning to listen.

So was I.

For the first time since my husband's death, I allowed myself to believe that our family might become stronger without pretending that we had never been broken.

I did not know what the future would bring.

I only knew that, for now, we were trying.

And that was something worth protecting.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: When I Finally Looked Honestly at the Life Walt Had Left Behind, I Realized That Accepting Help Was Different From Giving Up Control

The changes did not happen all at once.
