I said.

Michael nodded.

"Neither do I."

"I also don't want us to pretend the letters didn't happen."

Stephanie looked at the folder.

"I don't think any of us can forget them."

Danny rested his hands on the table.

"Maybe we should talk about what they made us feel before we talk about what Dad meant."

I looked at him.

It was a sensible suggestion.

So we began.

Michael admitted that he had felt defensive when he read his letter.

He said he had spent years trying to become the kind of person who could handle difficult situations without depending on anyone else.

When his father seemed to question that, he had taken it personally.

"I thought he was saying I cared too much about work," Michael said.

Jenna looked at him but did not interrupt.

Michael continued.

"Maybe I do sometimes."

He looked uncomfortable admitting it.

I reached for his hand.

"You've worked hard, sweetheart."

He nodded.

"But I don't want work to be the only thing people remember about me."

That was more honesty than I had expected.

Stephanie spoke next.

She said the letter had made her feel as though she had disappointed her father.

She had spent years trying to make her life look settled and successful.

When she read his words, she felt as though he had seen through the appearance she worked so hard to maintain.

"I wanted him to be proud of me," she said.

I squeezed her hand.

"I think he was proud of you."

She looked at me.

"But you don't know what he meant."

She was right.

I could not use my own feelings about Walt to explain every thought he had carried.

I could tell her that he had loved her.

I could remember the times he had spoken about her achievements with a quiet smile.

But I could not claim to know exactly what he had intended to say in the letter.

So I told her the truth.

"I don't know every answer. I wish I did."

She nodded.

Then Danny spoke.

He said he had felt nervous opening his envelope because he had spent years wondering whether his father thought he had wasted his potential.

He had never earned as much as Michael.

He had never built the kind of life Stephanie seemed to have.

Sometimes he had felt that his family saw him as the one who needed help rather than the one who could offer it.

I looked at him.

I wanted to deny that I had ever treated him that way.

But I remembered the times I had worried about his finances before asking how he was feeling.

I remembered the way I had praised his kindness while assuming he could manage without recognition.

I lowered my eyes.

"I'm sorry."

Danny looked surprised.

"For what?"

"For making you feel that being successful was the only thing that mattered."

He shook his head.

"Mom, you didn't do it on purpose."

"I know. But I still need to say it."

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he nodded.

I felt something loosen inside me.

Not because the past had been repaired.

It had not.

But because we were finally speaking about it.

Michael looked at the folder.

"Do we need to read the letters again?"

Stephanie shook her head.

"I don't think reading them again will make us feel differently."

Danny considered that.

"Maybe not. But I think we should keep them safe."

I agreed.

Walt had written those words for a reason.

We did not have to understand every part of them to recognize that they mattered.

I asked whether anyone had thought more about what we should do next.

Michael said he was willing to continue helping me review the financial documents.

Stephanie offered to help organize the household paperwork and make sure I had a clear list of the bills that needed attention.

Danny said he would keep checking on me and help with practical things around the house.

I thanked all three.

Then I added something I had been thinking about for days.

"I don't want any of you to promise more than you can manage."

They looked at me.

"I need honesty more than grand promises. If you can help, tell me how. If you can't, tell me that too."

Michael nodded.

Stephanie looked relieved.

Danny smiled slightly.

I could see that the request meant different things to each of them.

For Michael, it removed the pressure to solve everything.

For Stephanie, it meant she could offer help without pretending her life was perfectly organized.

For Danny, it meant he did not have to hide his own limitations while trying to support me.

I wished I had said those words earlier.

But there was no use regretting every conversation I had handled badly.

We could only begin where we were.

Later, while the others were talking in the living room, I went into the kitchen to make more tea.

Jenna followed me.

She stood beside the counter while I filled the kettle.

"Margaret, can I ask you something?"

"Of course."

She hesitated.

"Do you think Michael has been a good son?"

I turned toward her.

It was not the question I expected.

I thought about Michael's childhood.

The school projects.

The long hours he spent studying.

The times he had helped his father repair things around the house.

The times he had disappointed me.

I also thought about the way he had apologized after our recent conversation.

"I think he's still learning," I said.

Jenna nodded slowly.

"I think so too."

She looked toward the living room.

"He wants to do the right thing. Sometimes he gets so worried about doing it correctly that he forgets how it feels to the other person."

I understood that.

Perhaps I had done something similar for years.

I had wanted to keep everyone happy.

In trying to do that, I had sometimes forgotten to ask whether anyone was actually happy.

We carried the tea into the living room.

The children were laughing.

Michael sat on the floor, helping Ethan build a tower from wooden blocks.

Stephanie was holding Noah.

Danny leaned against the sofa, watching them.

I stood in the doorway for a moment.

This was not the family Walt had imagined when he wrote those letters.

It was not the family I had imagined when I called my children and told them I had lost everything.

It was simply the family we had.

Imperfect.

Sometimes careless.

Still capable of kindness.

I carried the tea to the table.

For that evening, it was enough.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: I Had Spent Years Believing My Husband’s Love Was Something I Never Needed to Question, Until His Letters Made Me Reconsider the Things We Never Said

The following Sunday, I invited all three children to my house.
