We want to understand what you need and what we can realistically do."

I felt a cautious sense of relief.

It was not the same feeling I had experienced when Danny offered to come over.

That moment had been immediate and personal.

This was different.

Michael was approaching the problem carefully, as he approached most things in his life.

I decided not to judge the difference too quickly.

"That's kind of you."

He explained that he wanted to review the bills and financial documents with me.

He thought we should understand exactly what was owed, what money remained, and which expenses could be reduced.

He also suggested that I speak with a qualified professional about the accounts.

I listened.

His ideas made sense.

I had been frightened enough that I had sometimes avoided opening certain envelopes.

A clear list of obligations would help.

A proper review would help.

I told him I would gather the documents.

He seemed relieved that I had agreed.

Then he asked whether I could meet him the following week.

I said yes.

We spoke for a few more minutes.

Before ending the call, he told me he loved me.

I told him I loved him too.

Afterward, I stood at the kitchen counter and looked at the toast cooling on my plate.

I was grateful.

I also felt something I had not expected.

A small sadness.

Michael had finally offered practical help, but I still remembered the way he had looked at the clock during the meeting.

I remembered how quickly he had wanted to leave.

I could not erase those memories simply because he was now willing to sit down with a calculator.

Maybe he was trying.

Maybe he had needed time to understand how serious the situation was.

Both things could be true.

I decided to give him the chance to show me what he meant.

Later that afternoon, Stephanie called.

She asked whether Michael had spoken to me.

I told her he had.

She sounded thoughtful.

"I've been thinking about everything, too."

I waited.

"I don't know what I can do financially right now, but I don't want you feeling that you have to deal with everything alone."

Those words meant something to me.

They were not a promise to pay my bills.

They were not an offer to move me into her house.

They were simply an acknowledgment that I was frightened and that she did not want me to feel abandoned.

I thanked her.

She asked whether she could come over the following Sunday.

I said I would like that.

After we hung up, I made a note on the calendar.

Sunday.

Stephanie.

It seemed like a small thing.

Still, I found myself looking at the date more than once.

I wanted to believe that our family could change.

Not overnight.

Not because Walt had written three letters.

But because we were finally beginning to say things we had avoided saying before.

The following week, Michael came to my house.

He brought a folder and a calculator.

He also brought coffee.

I noticed that he had remembered which kind I liked.

That small detail softened me.

We sat at the kitchen table and reviewed the documents.

He asked questions.

I answered as best I could.

Some figures were straightforward.

Others needed clarification.

There were accounts I had not fully understood and payments I had forgotten to include in my monthly expenses.

Michael made notes.

He did not criticize me for being confused.

That helped.

At one point, he stopped and looked at me.

"Mom, I'm sorry."

I put down my pen.

"For what?"

"For making you feel as though you were bothering me when you called."

I did not speak immediately.

I had wanted an apology.

Now that it had arrived, I was surprised by how little I wanted to say.

He looked uncomfortable.

"I was thinking about my own problems. I should have listened better."

I felt tears gathering in my eyes.

I blinked them away.

"Thank you for telling me."

He reached across the table and touched my hand.

"I can't promise to fix everything. But I can help you understand what we're dealing with."

I nodded.

That was a promise he could reasonably make.

I did not need him to become someone else.

I needed him to recognize that I was his mother, not an inconvenient task.

We continued reviewing the documents.

By the time he left, we had a clearer picture of my immediate expenses and the questions that still needed answers.

I thanked him.

He hugged me before walking to his car.

For the first time in weeks, I felt that we had made progress.

Not because the money had returned.

It had not.

Not because the future was suddenly secure.

It wasn't.

We had made progress because Michael had stayed long enough to listen.

On Sunday, Stephanie came over.

She brought a small cake from a bakery near her house.

We sat in the living room and drank tea.

At first, our conversation was awkward.

She asked about the house.

I asked about her family.

We talked about the weather and the children.

Then she looked at me.

"Mom, I think I was angry because I felt as though Dad had judged me."

I held my cup with both hands.

"What do you mean?"

She took a breath.

"I wanted to believe that I had done enough for him. When I read the letter, I felt as if he was telling me I hadn't."

I listened.

I could see how much the thought had troubled her.

I did not know whether Walt had intended to make her feel that way.

I only knew that she had.

"Did you ever ask him what he expected from you?" I said.

She shook her head.

"No."

"Why not?"

She looked down at her cup.

"Because I was afraid of the answer."

I understood that more than I wanted to admit.

I had spent years avoiding difficult questions because I feared what they might reveal.

Sometimes the questions remained unanswered.

Sometimes the answers came anyway, after the person who could explain them was gone.

I reached for Stephanie's hand.

"Your father loved you."

She nodded.

"I know."

"But loving someone doesn't mean we always understand them."

She looked at me.

For a moment, I saw the little girl she had been, sitting at the kitchen table after a difficult day and waiting for me to tell her that everything would be all right.

I wished I could do that now.

Instead, I told her the truth.

"I don't know exactly what your father meant by every word. I don't want to pretend I do."

She squeezed my hand.

"Neither do I."

We sat quietly for a while.

Then she helped me clear the cups.

Before she left, she hugged me.

This time, her arms felt less stiff.

I watched her walk to her car.

I did not know whether the changes would last.

I did not know whether my children would continue showing up when the situation became uncomfortable again.

But I had begun to see that people could take a first step without knowing exactly where it would lead.

That evening, I placed the calendar on the kitchen table.

Michael's visit was marked in one corner.

Stephanie's was marked on the following page.

I thought about Danny, who had never needed a calendar reminder to ask whether I had eaten.

Each of my children was different.

Each had disappointed me in some way.

Each had also shown me something worth holding on to.

I did not want to turn the letters into a permanent judgment against any of them.

Walt had written them for a reason.

I still did not understand that reason completely.

But I was learning that understanding a person required more than reading a page and deciding whether the words made us comfortable.

It required patience.

It required honesty.

And sometimes, it required admitting that the person we thought we knew had been carrying questions we had never bothered to ask.

I put the calendar away.

Then I washed Walt's coffee mug and placed it beside the sink.

Tomorrow, I would continue sorting through the papers.

I would make the calls that needed to be made.

I would deal with the bills one at a time.

And I would try to give my children the same chance I was asking them to give me.

Not a chance to pretend nothing had happened.

A chance to do better.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: As My Children Began Offering Help, I Realized That the Hardest Part of Losing Everything Was Learning Whom I Could Trust Without Losing Myself

Michael called on Saturday morning.
